Appliance trends for 2008 . . . and beyond
March 10, 2008 3:01 AM

Amana_jot_refrigerator Michael DiLauro, a product-information specialist who covers a wide range of home products for Consumer Reports, recently attended the 2008 International Builders’ Show. Here, Michael, who knows a thing or two about the appliance industry, provides his insight into the appliance trends you’ll see in the coming months and years:

• New lines and brands emerge. You’ll have three new full lines of appliance to consider when shopping this year. Samsung and LG will round out their offerings in 2008, as both will offer a complete line of major appliances; Samsung has added a dishwasher while LG has come out with a wall oven and a cooktop. Also debuting in the U.S. market this spring is Electrolux, which will have 130 new products in stores. Take a look at the new Electrolux appliances. The GE Café line, introduced last fall, has been a big success. Look for GE to increase the number of Café line products this year.

Also, after years of major changes and consolidation in the appliance industry—including Whirlpool’s acquisition of Maytag, Jenn-Air, and Amana—some brands are now being repositioned. Amana is being morphed into the brand for the practical style seeker. (Read about the company’s Jot dry-erase refrigerator, shown.)

• Appliances go high-tech. Sophisticated electronics continue to make their way into the appliance world. For cooking appliances, the gadgetry allows for easier-to-clean glass touch controls and more one-touch functions that control cooking time and temperature. Behind these one-touch settings are algorithms designed to bring the ovens up to the correct temperature and cook to the proper doneness, adjusting and providing visual feedback along the way. One range I checked out features 11 different cooking modes, many of which would not be possible without state-of-the-art electronics and algorithms. Ranges and wall ovens from several brands have electronic controls that are completely blacked out until you touch the surface. The electronic controls on some Bosch gear lights up when you bring your hand to within six inches of the controls.

• Lighting beams brightly. LED lights are now appearing on high-end refrigerators. Manufacturers are also adding what they call “theater lighting” and “luxury lighting” to their appliances—the lights brighten slowly after you open the door.

• Steam is hot. Steam modes are moving into many different appliances, so don’t be surprised if every manufacturer incorporates this technology into its cleaning, cooking and laundry lines in the near future.

NOTE: We've read your comments about the desire to see a report on carpet cleaners/shampooers. Consumer Reports is planning a testing-based project of carpet cleaners, including steam models. We expect to publish a report in a 2009 issue.—Editor, June 2, 2008

• Stainless steel still shines. As I’ve noted in recent years, the market share of stainless-steel appliances continues to increase. In categories like wall ovens and gas cooktops, stainless steel accounts for more than 80 percent of sales. For $2,000 and pricier refrigerators, about 80 percent of the refrigerators sold have a stainless-steel finish.

• Capacity gets bigger. Some refrigerators and cooking appliances have more usable interior space in the same-size box as improved insulation allows for tighter walls. For example, I saw more 30-inch ranges with two ovens, part of a fast-growing trend. I also spotted a few 30-inch cooktops with five burners, providing an extra cooking spot for one more pot or pan.

Samsungezopenhandle • Access and closing are easier. Manufacturers are offering more appliances, especially at the high end, that are designed to open easier, like the new EZ-Open handle on a Samsung French-door bottom-freezer refrigerator (shown). Soft-close cabinet doors and drawers have been a success in the cabinet market for years and now we are starting to see that moving to appliances, including on a Miele dishwasher I saw.

Does Consumer Reports have plans to review steam carpet cleaners?

When will Consumer Reports update their refrigerator reviews and comparrisons? I am interested in a French Doo fridge with ice & water dispensor.

What about glass/ceramic top kitchen ranges? A friend of mine who has one said never to buy one...the tops are terrible to clean. There are many web sites which have complaints about the difficulty in cleaning them. What does Consumer Reports know about cleaning glass/ceramic top kitchen ranges?

Hello -
For any of the 120v appliances, the almost 100 % inclusion of solid state controls suggests that these be used with an adequately-designed surge protector.

How about a technical review of these, to separate the
inferior from the legitimate?

Also, for those major appliances & Central A/Cs, is it worth the costs to pay for the various option plans available from our utility companies? I.E. - do these really provide ''surge protection?"
Thanks.

Same question as Ms Staiger - Does Consumer Reports have plans to review steam carpet cleaners?

I am interested in those steam carpet cleaners too. Our local stores have stopped renting the cleaners they once had, and I am considering purchasing one for small messes.

Similar question to the requests for information on steam carpet cleaners. Has Consumer Report reviewed any of the steam mops like the H2O Mop or the Shark steam cleaner?

What about those steam carpet cleaners. With 3 kids, 2 cats and a dog, we are spending a small fortune on mobile carpet cleaners and would love to save on that cost if there is a decent cleaning machine out there that does as good or better job than the mobile cleaning services.

I am interested in Carpet Steam Cleaners also! Does Consumer Reports plan on reviewing this category any time soon?

There seems to be quite a few people interested in steam carpet cleaners. I specifically joined this site so that I could learn more about them. Do you have a response, CR?

I too would like you to review home carpet cleaners. A review of the various types of carpet cleaning services would be nice also, i.e. steam -vs- dry -vs- wet.

Consumer Reports has yet to test and rate home steam cleaners, and after earlier testing and reviewing, Choice magazine (the Australian equivalent of Consumer Reports) cannot recommend any steam cleaners at all. Editors at Choice do give some tips on what to look for in a cleaner and what to avoid. Representing the other side are sites like Allergy Buyer's Club, which say steam cleaners are an excellent way to clean bathrooms, floors and upholstery without using chemicals. ConsumerGuide features reviews of several steam cleaners, but they are not comparative or thorough. Balanced steam cleaner reviews from owners at Amazon.com and Epinions, which give a good idea how well steam cleaners work in actual use.

I, too, Karen, joined to get the proverbial 'skinny' (what with the kids and the dog) on steam cleaners. Hope everyone gets the answers they're looking for! I guess I'll cancel my membership....

I also just paid my registration fee to join the site expecting to be able to get reviws on both carpet cleaners and general steam cleaners. Needless to say I am very disappointed to see that they have never been done. It is not like these cleaners are novelty products.

I am also surprised that consumer reports does not at least acknowledge the comments above indicating some sort of awareness of the needs of its customer base...

When will CR do a study on the Steam Shark all floor cleaner?

I too logged on to find ratings on carpet cleaners last reported on JULY 03 but evidently no longer available. No archives?

Holy cow! I have been searching this site for over 20 minutes looking for steam cleaner info - and found this page! Too funny! Apparently there there is no info at Consumer Reports on these carpet cleaners! I have a Hoover that just had a couple 'small' things go wrong (it is 10 years old & has worked perfectly) so I took it to Sears & they quoted me $200 for parts & labor! For the love of milk! So, looks like I'll just be buying new! Please, please, put some reviews out here for us!!

Please explain to your subscribers why you refuse to test any of the various types of carpet cleaners on the market, when it is obvious that we want to see them tested.

I second or third that! Where are the reviews for steam carpet/floor cleaners? CR has great reviews of the standard vacuums and wet/dry vacs but nothing on steam cleaners? Please update ASAP.

I was really hoping to find some ratings on carpet cleaners, too. I thought for sure I'd come to the right place. Disappointing:(

I to have been looking for information on steam carpet cleaners. Our local rental store machine is old and hard to move around plus in poor repair. There is need for information on steam carpet cleaners.

Please evaluate the market for carpet 'steam' cleaners sooner rather than later. From talking with professional carpet cleaners, I have been told that "pet" enzyme carpet cleaners do not work effectively without a significant amount of heat.

I have used the same tired model for years and would like an upgrade, but NONE of the models available (and there are lots more) seem to stand out. I would like a thorough explanation why they call their wet carpet vacs 'steam' cleaners when there is not steam involved!

Ditto! Consumer Reports your customer base is asking? We would like some info! Please respond. CW

I also am looking for info on steam cleaners and came across this comment section. Please CR...do some research

I too joined to check out the carpet steam cleaner scoop...I also wanted to learn more about hard floor steam cleaners since I ave scads of tile and scads of kids...argh...I guess all the requests aren't making adifference to cr as I've been looking everywhere and finally landed here.

I'm looking for info. on steam cleaners, too.

I appreciate the number of requests for product reviews that Consumer Reports must receive, but what's the point of so many posts (largely requesting the same thing, in this case) with no response from CR?

I, too, need info on home carpet cleaners. If I know you don't plan to review them in the near future, I'll continue my search elsewhere. You should be flattered that so many of us respect your good work, but non-responsiveness isn't what I think of when I think of CR.

So when my guest ask me why my house smells like dog urine, should I just tell them my house will smell better some time in 2009 when consumer reports does their job and rates a machine so I know what to buy. We rely on this service, that is why we spend our money as subscribers. Save the sometime in 2009 for a group of less irritated people.

I too would like to see a review of carpet cleaners. I joined consumer reports for this reason. Most homes now have some kind of carpet cleaner. I am disappointed in consumer reports that they have not done any reviews. I called our local vacuum store to find out what I could today. Please consider doing reviews on home carpet cleaners.

I too would like to see a report on the steam mops ie the Shark, or H20.

I need to purchase a good carpet cleaner. It is "past" spring cleaning time for my carpet and like many others who have posted,I need some expert advice from Consumer Reports about which one is the best deal. I need to purchase my cleaner very soon, but am disappointed because CR has not covered this. I always feel more confident when making a big purchase with CR's advice. Please review and tell us about the best carpet cleaners soon.

By the way after reading the other posts with no response from CR, maybe no one is reading our email requests in this are of the website... or our requests are not forwarded to the people who care about CR's customer needs. Maybe we should be sending our requests to one of the following CR officers? I found the named of the president, among others, on CR website. Since requests have been coming in for nearly three months from consumers with yet no response, I will send the president a copy of our requests. I will bet he will find someone in the company to help us. The website says they want to hear from their customers. Hang in there everyone...maybe we will get some great CR advice very soon. I need advice on a steam carpet cleaner too. I cannot understand why this many customers have been posting since March 10, 2008 with no reply from CR, but there must be a reason.
I am going to make a copy of all of the requests and mail it to the CR president. The CR website lists all of the management and it says they want to hear from us. I bet the president will find someone in the company who can give us some good CR advice about which steam carpet cleaners are the best. Perhaps, no one is monitoring this part of the website or forwarding our requests to the people who care about CR's customer service needs for advice.

Hang in there...maybe we will get some advice soon.

Just came home from Lowes and bought the SAMSUNG DISHWASHER DMR57LFS. I was going there to check out the BOSCH and WHIRLPOOL that CR tagged as Best Buy. I ended up liking the BOSCH and KENMORE, but each had their pro and con. Right before I was about to leave, I saw the Samsung and it met all the pros I wanted from both the Bosch and Kenmore, even the price. Without hesitation, I made the purchase!

We'll see how this Samsung performs.

This is the first time I've ever written your org. I am also VERY surprised and disappointed that there is no info. on steam floor cleaners, ie shark, bissel, h20. Even though the floor/extended are fairly new, the hand models have been around for years! PLEASE HURRY!!!!! I was going to purchase, yet deferred my buying decision until I had researched through you. I need to go back and get one ASAP! My floors are dirty and need help! My floors and I thank you all, including so many others that have voiced exactly the same concern!

The article above states that the review will appear in a 2009 issue.

It is disappointing that this will take so long.

Consumer reports seems more concerned in evaluating automobiles. (Maybe one day they will mention the number of Toyota recalls). Maybe the steam clean products aren't a big (enough) ticket item to warrant a fater turn around time.

I just subscribed to this site and am extremely disappointed to see there are no reviews on steam mops such as the H2O. I also see how many people have commented on this subject.

Do the Hard Surface Steam Cleaner work well on laminate flooring, and does the laminate flooring do well with steam? Should I or shouldn't I get one? If so, which one??? I like quick and easy and I also like clean. I have 3 housecats so picking up dust and fur is important. My floors are usually pretty clean and they are all laminate which is great with pets in the house. I have no carpet at all. Would a hard surface steam cleaner be a good tool for me?

Besides carpet steamers, I have an interest in hard surface/hard wood floors steam cleaners. How good are they? Are they good over the long term for hardwood floors? Which is the most versatile?

I add my voice to the very disappointed category. I bet more people buy steam cleaners than cars.

Since consumers reports alludes to the fact that "steam" is in as far as the many manufacturers of cleaning products are concerned...why the delay in testing and info. I have a large area of tile flooring and like others need info on "steam mops" to be an informed consumer. If the delay is due to personnel, I volunteer myself and my floors to test the steam mop products.
While the price of gasoline is high and the reviews of autos is
important...the rapidly changing scenario in the automotive field
hints that the studies will be short term over on going periods of time...so please give other areas equal time. You after all are a consumer guide and as such should be able to offer current information not information thats availabe 6 months to a year after the product hits the markets.
Diane

Data for "steam mops" and other steam cleaners should be avialable at least by the time the product has been available on the market for 4-6 months. It does us the consumer little good to get data a year or longer after they come out...by that time the report is outdated and of little use. Come on Consumer Reports you can do better than that! If you need volunteers to test I will volunteer my time and my tile floors!
Diane

Upcoming data for "steam mops" and other steam cleaning appliances should be avialable before 2009, by that time the info will be outdated and other models will be out. You can do better that this Consumer Reports. Otherwise those of us who look to you to become informed consumers wouldn't need you. How about picking people in different locations to help you test a product if personnel and cost are a factor causing this delay?
Diane

Please report on carpet shampooers soon; don't wait until 2009!

Would like info on steam mops-h2o, or Shark

I would really like to see a report on steam cleaners, both floor models and hand held. It looks like A LOT of others would like to see a report on this as well! Please don't delay!

I would like to see a report on floor and hand held steam cleaners. It looks like a lot of others would too! Please don't delay in giving us this needed information!

I have 2 comments:
1. I feel like I wasted my money for the online service because their is no carpet steam cleaner reviews.
2. I can not understand how CR drivers only got 37 mpg in their honda civic hybrid(gas-saving cars). I have not been below 47 mpg., with a high of 51 mpg, since buying mine in December of 2007.

When will you be doing a study on hardwood/laminate floor cleaners? I am thinking about purchasing the shark steam mop, but would like to review the product through CR before doing so. My floors need help!

I would also like to see a report on the Shark steam mop.

For what it's worth, here's my review of the Eureka Atlantis Steam Carpet Cleaner...

1) Bought it because of the size - the 2 stage handle folds down to make it small - think a cannister vac w/o the hose. Easy storage.
2) Main Plus: Vacuum is strong - pulls up a lot of dirt. Scrubbing brushes work. It is only now getting 'tired' at close to 10 years old!
3) Main drawback - like ALL carpet cleaners, it uses hot tap water - NOT STEAM.
4) 2nd Plus - it uses 2 tank side-by-side system that is easy to clean and dry out.
5) 2nd drawback - Capacity - Only holds about 1 gallon of water - enough for about half of one bedroom. The it needs a refill.
6) Long term issues 1: The plastic bottom base plate got cracked soon after I bought it - cracked got bigger each time I pushed a new water tank in place. Called Eureka - got the replacement part fairly easily - didn't cost much - fixed it myself. The device is not too complicated.
7) Long Term issue 2: Probably because of MY dis-assemble and repair - I couldn't get the soap delivery tank/hose to work anymore - I tried fixing it several times. Now I just 'hose' the carpet with a spray bottle of soap before using.

I have been waiting for info on the shark steam floor cleaner and have been checking back periodically. I am quite disappointed that you have not tested any of these steam cleaners yet. We are trying to use products that do not have any harmful chemicals in them so the steam cleaners would be great in helping to clean our hardwood floors but I want to make sure they work. Please test these products soon and let us know as soon as possible!

I, too, am interested in the steam carpet cleaner reviews. I would also like to know about the wood/tile/laminate floor scrubbers such as the Hoover.

I would also like to know about GAS WALL OVENS. These seem to have disappeared from the market in favor of stoves with "stand on your head ovens and broilers." I hope others are looking to replace gas wall ovens.

Thanks.

Can you please accelerate your testing/reviews for steam mops on hardwood/ceramic tile floors? I specifically joined to find this information out and was disappointed not to find any. I will happily write the President if this will encourage the process along.

I too am very disappointed that that CR has not reviewed the hardwood steam cleaners e.g BISSEL, SHARK, etc. They have been on the Market for quite a while, and I really don' want to wait until 2009 to buy one!

I am also looking for reviews of floor cleaning machines - bissell, hoover, etc. - that specifically are designed for hardwood, laminate, and tile floors. They've been out there for a while. CR, we need this!!!!

Same here - I have looked for information on steam cleaners in Consumer Reports - this is an area I could use help.

I also would haved liked to see a review on hard floor cleaners. After reading epinions and customer reviews online, I purchased a Hoover floormate spin brush cleaner. It's going back today. It is just as labor intensive as my mop and a lot noisier. It does edges well but not corners. My home is all rustic Mexican tile and there aren't enough brushes on the tile grout cleaner to do a fast and efficient job. After mopping for thirty years I was hoping for some relief, but this isn't it. I will look forward to the report.

I also came here to find out about Shark's steam mop thingy! Really, at this point CR should look at this page as a petition, not just a comment section.

Please dont buy the Shark Steam Mop. I received one as a wedding gift and was so excited to use it. When I did the handle broke within 10 minuted and rendered it unusable. I cannot return it because I broke it. I was not doing anything out of the ordinary, it is a cheap imitation of some of the more expensive options. Please dont waste your money.

I too, am looking for a rating on steam cleaners but see CR hasn't done one. Makes me wonder why I'm paying a subscription!

I want to know more about the Shark Steam Mop and the Bissel steam hard floor and carpet cleaner. My renewal of Consumer Reports will run out Aug 08 and if I don't see any information on these by then I will not renew. Not renewing is our only way of moving these guys to actually pay attention to all these comments. Lois

Add me to list of those who would like to see a report on carpet cleaners. With so many different kinds to choose from, I would have thought CR would have done the research already.

I come to CR before making any big purchases and am very disappointed that you don't have ratings for hardwood floor steamers. Get up with the times and update your site!

Me too. I was looking for ratings of carpet cleaners now (tile in the future). Can't wait till 2009 though. Especially interested in edge cleaning ability, as those I've rented don't do the job on a beige multi-level where it meets the wall/mopboard/molding (whatever it's called). Wonder if others have had the same problem.

I too want information on a steam vac. Mine just went out and it was going to cost 145 to fix it plus 30$ to look at it. It was a hoover and worked wonderful for years but I had the sears maintenance and didnt renew and of course it stopped working. For the cost of fixing I would rather purchase a new one. I borrowed a friends and hers had a problem with the container holding the product breaking/cracking and falling off everytime you tried to clean. She said she had replace it several times already. I would also like this to clean hardwood and tile floors. I have 5 children, cat, dog and a HUSBAND. Need help quick. (dont want to rent, they don't look clean and who knows what was cleaned before I got it...)
I have my carpets professionally done every 6 months but I need them more than that so I keep one ready to go in the coat closet.. I have the spotbot but like someone else said "it leaves a circle" so I always use the manual part which would take forever in a 5000 sq ft home. HELP!!! Desperate House Wife

Ditto most all of the above! I guess the dirt on all of our floors is piling up as fast as the Consumer Reports reviews aren't! It's waaaay past time that we get some company feedback on the quality of the many floor steam cleaners out there. We need some help CR, please....

Is anybody with clout out there listening? Sounds like most everything has already been said. The dirt is piling up on our floors as fast as the Consumer Reports reviews aren't! Choosing which floor steam cleaner to buy is difficult because there are so many on the market! Please CR, this is your reason for being - we need some help out here!

I cannot believe that I finally suscribe today because I am desperate with 2,000 square feet of white tile and decided to check out Hoover's Floormate CR's rating. Mega dittos....is any one reading these comments?

I tried looking up Vegetable Steamers because of getting ready to purchase one. I saw "No" comparison or CR's best choice on your site. I also tried looking up Soldering Irons, with the same results. I'm starting to wonder if my subscription to your site is worth the money !

I am looking for info on steam cleaners & steam sanitizers - Shark, H2O and the Monster Pro (I believe it is called) hand held. We have all hardwood and tile floors - and have been in cat rescue - I urgently need a quality product which sanitizes, is easy to handle and leaves no dangerous chemical residue to stick to little feet ... I would also be happy to test. 2009 is a loooong way away, when I'm cleaning furballs now!

OK, Where are the Carpet Steam Cleaner Reviews????
Still waiting!!!

Can I get my money back for this subscription or do I just have to swallow the loss? Perhaps we should be assessing CR a rating of far-less-than-expected-value-for-money. Steam cleaners of all kinds have been on the market for years... why have they not been reviewed? And why on earth did I waste my money subscribing to CR when they clearly don't listen to their customers. Aren't we the ones providing the money required for their testing...?

Where are the reports on the floor steam cleaners? Hey, get with it, how many requests from your members do you need to do something here??

One more person who came to find info re: steam floor and hand held cleaners who is very surprised to find it lacking.

I found another consumer site with tons of user ratings. O-l-d ratings. Shocked there is no unbiased study done on these yet.

2009 feels like a long time to wait. Please reconsider

I really wanted to see ratings on hard floor steam cleaners today. One went on sale at Target and who knows if it is up to the job? I've read the reviews on Amazon for the Hoover Floormate H3060 - heck there are so many models, I have no clue. Most don't seem to work well, so CR.... which one does? Please expedite the testing!!

So, our floors will have to wait until 2009. I guess I am done with consumer reports! Thanks for being so responsive to your readers and their needs. Yes, I am being sarcastic.

here, here, on steam vac reviews, would be useful

I'm another loser. I shelled out $26 because I wanted information on floor and carpet cleaners, Looks like money down the drain. Has anyone had experience with the Bissell Proheat 2x or the Bissell Quicsteam Turbo?

I am also interested in the steam carpet cleaners, especially the high end versions that can clean stairs easily.

I'm just another subscriber chiming into this page, begging for ratings on at-home steam and carpet cleaners.

I need info on low cost canister vacuums that can be used just for dust pick up and floors (no carpets). I specifically subscribed to this site to get the extra info - so far, just the same info as in print - and harder to access. Please make this site more user friendly or I will be a former customer. Truly disappointed, considering how much I love your magazine.

Doh!

I've check here for steam cleaners on a couple of occasions. I was really suprised that this item had not been reviewed. I sure wish you guys would hurry this one up. 2009 is a bit far out for an item that is in demand that has never been reviewed.

I have been on an endless search for non-bias info on steam mops. HELP is needed now!! I am happy that you will be doing a report on them but, I need it before 2009 unless it is January 1 of 2009. As you can see from this post and MANY others this information is much needed now. I know that as a magazine you have your whole year mapped out but, could something be squeezed in the web site?
Thank you

I am also looking for comparisons on steam cleaners, not carpet cleaners. The ones I've researched so far have low prices and are gutless, just gadgets. A decent steam cleaner seems to cost the better part of $1K and I'd like to see CR cover the higher-end appliances. I like the idea a lot, especially for hideous-grungy jobs like the kitchen appliances and floors/cabinets and the bathroom fixtures. You can't get capacity, PSI and real steam in a cheap model.

I too was hoping to find more on steam mops/units that work on tile. Tried one hoover (non steam) but it did a terrible job as the brushes barely touched the tile. Would be great to find one unit that would do both carpet and tile since my house is 50/50 - porcein tile and carpet. Keep seeing reviews on some shark steam mops and other brands that the handles keep breaking. Bissell has a combo unit for under $90 (vis hsn) that looks promising - but it's not steam and you have to use chemicals. Have viewed other steam units that "do it all" but they go for well over $500. Found another steam mop cheaper than Shark and another by about $40 - but will it work either? Will a steam mop get the grout clean? Help CR - I volunteer my house for testing too!

I am joining the multitude to urge you to review
hard floor cleaners. I have a durable but dated
vinyl linoleam kitchen floor that I have to scrub
on my hands and knees to get all the crevices clean.
My joints can't survive until 2009. Will the shark do the
job or is that new Hoover scrubber the ticket?
Please expediate the answer.

I am interested in the vapor cleaners when is Consumers Reports
going to test these cleaners

I too am chiming in to express my disappointment me on lack of information and response from CR on this topic.

I am desperate to find out the best commercial carpet cleaner on the market today - that also cleans set-in stains - also whether steam or dry cleaning is the best way to go - please hurry with your help!!! thank you very much

I too am disappointed that I was unable to find any info on steam cleaners/carpet cleaners on the market these days. Two friends have told me that they are happy with their Bissell Proheat II X for what it's worth to anyone. One friend that was quite pleased with her Bissel has three dogs (one is still a puppy). Her carpets looked great and there was no residual "puppy" smell. I just looked at theBissel website and they have a new one out that is supposed to be even better if you have pets. For lack of any info from "our source" maybe this will help someone.

For crying out loud, go buy some some carpet cleaners and review them already CR!! :) I want to buy one SOON.

I paid the local Chem-dry person... couldn't tell they did anything other than the carpet was a little damp. Did our own with Rug Doctor and what a difference. Most of the stains were gone and this was one YEAR later! Will NEVER pay ChemDry again for certain.

Anyone have good/bad experiencse to review carpet cleaners personally?

Should we stick with renting rug doctors or buy a...? Bissell? Hoover? Other?

Leslie

I have a Kenmore refrigerator model #363.9552722 bought about 10 years ago. Every year or 18 months the hose that supplies water to the ice maker breaks where it connects to the on/off solenoid.
I usually cut out the broken section and reconnect it to the solenoid. I can't stretch the hose any more to reconnect it.
Can't find any recalls on this problem. Is mine the only 'fridge that does this?

Adding another voice. I too joined Consumer Reports almost a year ago for the specific purpose of getting unbiased information about steam or wet carpet cleaners as opposed to vacuum cleaners; I already use a CR-recommended vacuum. While it's nice to know that reviews will be out in 2009, I've got a situation now where I cannot wait, it's a health issue. So I am glad to learn here about Amazon.com and Epinions, will log off now and go check them.

Note: I remember a similar refusal to take microwave ovens seriously, thirty something years ago; they were basically banned from CR as too dangerous because all leaked. Hope the otherwise marvelous organization learns from these episodes of member frustration.

s.a.r.

Shame on you CR for not letting us, the consumers, know about steam cleaners of all kinds! I have been coming here for months trying to find some info about hard floor steam cleaners, but, alass, still nothing!
You say you won't have that info until 2009 and I, like others, say that's not soon enough!!!!!
Perhaps we should all just drop our memberships until the reviews come out sometime in 2009. I think I'll just do that!!!!! I didn't just purchase my membership to find out about steam cleaners, I've been a paid subscriber for years!!!!!
I'm verrrrrrrry disappointed!!!!

the main reason i bought this subscription was because i wanted to research carpet cleaners or steam cleaners for home use and there is nothing? what the... oh well i guess i'll have to wait!
:-(

I am interested in Consumer reports doing a survey on the Stark or the H2) steam mop. How soon will these 2 steam cleaners be tested?

Is there going to be a review of hard surface steam cleaners in the near future?

Hey CR! I want to purchase a carpet steam cleaner too!
I value your opinion which is why I subscribe. You have a lot of people in this blog that would try them out for you.

I too would like to see a report on the steam mops ie the Shark, or H20. It appears to me you have a lot of request to test the steam mop. Please get busy and make us happy CR customers.

I thought I could easily log in and find out which carpet cleaning system is beter, steam or chem dry. I'm very disappointed.

Can you please accelerate your testing/reviews for steam mops on hardwood/ceramic tile floors? I specifically joined to find this information out and was disappointed not to find any.

After doing parallel research on vacuums I was also very disppointed in the vacuum reviews.
What has happend to CR? My subscription was a waste of money and time.

Why no testing done on hardwood/tile steam cleaners ie the shark or bissell??? Is anyone at Consumer Reports testing these products. I want to get away from chemicals and use steam. Lets get it together Consumer Reports the world is waiting!!!!!

I was hoping too that I would find ratings on steam mops but to my surprise I am one of the many others disppointed. I have been a member of CR for a couple years and most of the time their studies do not include the new modles or they have no information at all. I don't think I will renew after this subscription runs out because I can get better information reading ratings from other websites.

Wow. I've tried looking up a few random things and wasn't too surprised they weren't tested. When I thought to look up steam cleaners I thought for SURE it would have been tested! I mean, why wouldn't it?? It's a rather important piece of machinery! My goodness! So much for that... Still haven't found a use for my subscription...

So what is the answer to everybody's questions. When will you be doing a review of products like H2O and Shark steamers? Why such a delay?

So what is the answer to everybody's questions. When will you be doing a review of products like H2O and Shark steamers? Why such a delay?

Please review capet cleaners - thanks

I have a Shark Steamer with Floor attachment. My entire first floor is slate and it works great with two exceptions. It will run out of water before I am done so I usually need two tanks-full. The second is it is not exactly powerful enough for kitchen floor. Mainly near the stove that gets grimy, but with a good cleaner sprayed on before, it works great. The small high-pressure attachment makes it great to clean around the toilet without actually touching anything. Just aim steam and wipe! Attachments are great for the stove, sink and my husband loves using it with the metal brushes to clean the grill!

Overall, wont clean the tile grout, but does get the tile clean without cleaners.

I too joined to get info on items like the home carpet steam cleaners. all users should voice there concern over this issue. thank you everyone. I am tried of paying carpet cleaners hundreds of dollars for a hour of work.

With the big "Green" movement I am surprised CR has not looked into this area yet but, I really hope they decide to do so.
I am not talking about carpet steam cleaners but steam and vapor cleaners that are able to clean and sanitize just about everything & everyroom in your home.
The LadyBug vapor machines look particularly economical and durable but are very expensive.
Please consider this new and important field to research.

No information on Steam Carpet Cleaners?????? What gives?

I have 2 cats and I really need to get a carpet cleaner and so I thought to make sure I get the best one, I would join and get the information from Coneumer Reports. BIG MISTAKE>>>>>>>

cb~

Would love to see a consumer report comparing steam vapor cleaners. I have tile floors and lots of grout that needs to be cleaned. Also, would like to have tools to use in bathroom, kitchen etc as attachments. Hurry!

I want Consumer Reports to test the carpet cleaning services(the companies)to evaluate their claims and effectiveness. Are companies that claim "steam cleaning" over "dry" cleaning correct? Does the "Dry Cleaning" method work better? Are there newer methods of cleaning out there? Which chemicals should be avoided on carpets?

How long before CR gives an answer?

I too am wondering about various hard floor steam mops. How about a review?

Any advice on the H2O and Shark steamers? I have ceramic, hardwood and rugs.

would love to know if you have tested HARD FLOOR/WOOD STEAM CLEANERs (not carpet) ...
this was the primary reason I signed up with CR. Wood floors cover 90% of our home.. and we have 2 dogs.. The manual labor required to clean the floors is taking its toll. If testing has not been done, please advise if/ when you are planning to do so... Thanks very much.

Very disappointed with CR for not caring what your members need. This will be the last time I sign on. All we want is a comparison of the top rated shampooers. Obviously, this is way to much to expecpt.......soooooooooooooo long

FYI: There won't be a CR review of carpet steam cleaners until sometime around 02/09, read it elsewhere on this site. Hopefully, CR will also review the various steam cleaner detergents at the same time!

GOOD GRIEF!!! I have been a loyal customer of consumer reports for years and I too EXPECTED to see something about SOME type of steam cleaner!! HOW HARD IS THIS, PEOPLE!? I want to know if a H2O Mop is good or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH, and BEFORE JANUARY!

Was very surprised at the comments re no review of steam cleaners..we were previous subscribers to Consumer Report Magazine but found we did not utilize it as much as we had in beginning mainly due to time constraints...bought ShopSmart on news stand and both my husband and I liked the format etc and discussed subscribing ..but after going to this website to see reviews on steam carpet cleaners we are having second thoughts..as this is a division of Consumer Reports it seems there would be a review of some sort??

Put me on the list with all the others that need a review of carpet shampooers before next year. If you saw my carpet, you'd understand. Surely, you've have now some information on what and what not to buy.

Add my name to the list of people urging you to review steam mops. We are looking at buying one for our hardwood floor.

Looks like requests for this have been occurring for months. Could consumer reports please comment on whether this is even on the list to be reviewed. And if so when is it likely to occur.

Thanks

We concur with Linda's question, repeated below. We will soon replace our current Bissell steam vac and would like CR's take on these models: Bissell model no. 9400-9, Bissell model no. 9200-2, Hoover model no. F7452-900, and Hoover model no. F7222-900. We check CR's test results BEFORE we buy.

__Does Consumer Reports have plans to review steam carpet cleaners?

Well. I selected the "Preview" button and was returned to the current page without a preview pane. I'm assuming my entry was siphoned-off into interstellar space, probably to the Alpha Quadrant, vicinity of the Sol System.

I know better. I should have saved my write-up in Notepad before clicking any submission button so that, in the event of a problem like what just happened, I can easily rehash my words. I'll regurgitate my entry once again and if IT doesn't work, ... phooey.

--

I concur with Linda's question, the first entry -- Mar 10, 2008 12:18:13 PM.

With five cats, their upchucked hairballs and their constant disapproval of the best foods I buy to feed them (Cat food? Not good enough for them. I've resorted to feeding them albacore tuna and finely diced cooked, chicken breasts. And these dishes work, ... sometimes.) by spewing nasty concoctions over, what was once, very nice carpet. It's not that my Bissell steam vac is not up to the task, kinda-sorta. I endured a complete melt-down the other night trying to clean up a thoroughly nasty mess deposited by Scooter and did things to my Bissell which it was not designed to do; Bissells don't fly very well. (Lesson to self; never attempt cleanups after over-indulging in Scotch. Save cleanups for the next day.)

I am fond of Bissell products but would like to see CR's test reviews comparing the following steam vacs: Bissell model no. 9400-9, Bissell model no. 9200-2, Hoover model no. F7452-900, and Hoover model no. F7222-900. These models seem to be at the top of their individual company hierarchies.

I apologize. When I determined that there were no CR reviews on steam vacs, I jumped to the postings by CR fans, read the first entry, jumped to the bottom of the page, and entered a comment. When the preview failed, I entered "steam" (without quote-marks of course) in the IE's Find box (Ctrl + f) and discovered (1) that CR will provide steam vac reviews in 2009 and (2) that are many others interested in steam vacs.

I cannot wait until 2009 because, as you all know, Bissells don't fly very well. I'll just have to wing-it.

Oh! For John Lingurar (May 17, 2008 12:44:52 PM): purchase a Bissell SpotBot. It's great for those small messes.

Anybody want any cats?

Conyers, Georgia, USA

Wish CR wouldn't wait until 2009 to test steam mops! Info is needed now.

Thanks.

We had a hoover that has quit working after about 5 years. A long time...sure. We only used it on two rooms twice a year, not sure it was worth it. I would like to hear others personal experience with them, before the 2009 issue...Rug Doctors any good? They were good as rentals for me.

I have been looking for a steam cleaner for my porcelain & ceramic tile floors for years. I need something that does not allow dirty water to roll back into the grouting and stain it. The hands and knees cleaning process works fine, but is very time consuming. Help....let us all know and quickly!!!!

Recently purchased a Samsung dishwasher DMR57LFS. Had planned on getting either a Bosch (we are very happy with our 3 yr old Bosch washer and dryer) or Kitchen Aid (our 16 yr old Kitchen Aid ‘fridge is still doing great). But the Bosch did not have a drying element or food disposal system, and so it was dropped it off the list. The Kitchen Aid models were nice, but seem to have a lot of plastic and felt a bit flimsy. Then we looked at the Samsung. It was sturdy and had all the features we wanted. We are very satisfied! It is quiet, and most importantly, the dishes come out clean and dry! With five kids and at least 2 loads a day, we hope this one lasts longer than that most intensely disappointing Maytag we bought just 2 years ago!

How many years of suscribing to Consumer Reports does it take to receive an issue that contains information, test results, and recommendations on carpet steam cleaners or for that matter any carpet cleaner other than a vacuum cleaner? It appears to this suscriber that Consumer Reports ought to be paying more attention to it's suscriber base than a bunch of "do my own" carpetbaggers.

have you or will you report on carpet cleaner/steamers?
thanx

Whoa is me! Whoa is me!

...No reviews of carpet/floor steam cleaners? I'm left to the marketing machine that is the consumer products industry.

If Consumer Reports can't afford to review this line of products increase the subscription price. Higher priced unbiased information is better than no information, and a smelly carpet.

Dear commenters:
With two dogs and 2 grandsons, I bought a Hoover Steam Carpet cleaner five years ago and I recommend it to everyone. I use only HOT water in the tank, and RugDoctor product cleaner (the other brands do not work well), but the carpet comes clean very easily as long as I go slow. I clean the machine after every use. My son also uses it, so the machine gets used almost every month and still works like a champ. It cleans better than ANY prof carpet cleaner company per anyone who has come to my house.
As for the hard-floor cleaners...as a long time subscriber to CR, I too, was disappointed it had not done anything with them. After all, they've been around forever (my mother had one in 1950's)! A friend who owns one now said to not buy the H2O or the Shark because they don't dry the floor after-you still have to wait for it to dry, plus neither scrub the grout. She owns the Hoover floormate and says it works absolutely fabulously. Since I've had such good luck with the Hoover steam carpet cleaner, I am going to pay a bit more and get the top-of-the-line Hoover FLoormate and use 'green' products or maybe just straight steam like my friend does. Who needs CR if you can get info from actual users on Amazon, epinion, and friends?
CR rates those products that are glitzy...cars, cameras, camcorders, computers. They aren't too concerned with everyday stuff.

There have been dozens of requests for reviews on carpet steam cleaners over the last several months, and as a subscriber I find CR's response that a report will come some time in 2009 to be insufficient and unacceptable. I hope it will be amended with an actual date soon.

I agree about the Hoover Steam Vac. The one I have is not the top of the line or most expensive. I believe I paid $139 at Walmart. It was reccommended to me by a friend who has nine children and a dog in their house. She uses it alot and has had it for a couple of years and it is still working. Sometimes people pay way to much for something thinking that the more it cost the better it is. The more expensive hoover vac has not had very good comments or reviews from consumers if you look on BestBuy.com or Walmart.com. More expensive is not always better and if the cheaper one works good and it lasts 5 or more years then go get another one at $139. It should last more than 5 years though. I got one for Christmas based on my friends reccommendation. Sometimes word of mouth and comments online from real people who use these products is the best way to go.

Wow, I can't believe this - no steam cleaners review. I wish I would have checked first and saved my money. We are in the market now and waiting until 2009 isn't what I had in mind.

I too will be canceling my subscription. I have been in need of a steam rug shampoo machine and can not find any recommendations from Consumer Report on which is the best to purchase. What is worse is the number of requests from other subscribers for review on these machines, and Consumer Report seems to be not reading or ignoring their consumer's request. What a disappointment this subscription, and their customer has been.

I subscribed to CR today and expected to find ratings for the steam mops I've seen advertised on TV. Just like everyone else, I'm amazed these products haven't been reviewed yet.

We who live in cities need a lot more info (testing) in regards to compact appliances. Not everyone lives in the suburbs with lots of room! I am an online subscriber, and have not had much use for info posted on the site to date.

I am interested in reviews of steam cleaners, specifically the Hoover F7412-900.

As far as surge suppressors and battery backups, I have worked in the computer industry for over 12 years, and what I have found is that warranty length and monetary compensation for connected equipment ($10,000-$75,000 or more) pretty much tells the whole story for quality. If there is no connected equipment guarantee, then the mfgr doesn't have enough faith in their equipment to provide it.

I too am joining the disappointed. Nothing on carpet cleaners. How long does it really take to do a study. They are more than welcome to come do my carpets to try out the different brands. I need to find one that doesn't leave too much water behind because we live in a cool climate and it takes forever for the carpets to dry even with fans. Anyone have any info on that end of it????

I too am waiting for review of carpet cleaners, but if if's anything like the reviews you have done on digital cameras, By the time the review is published the models will have been replace by new ones. Back to square one.

I can't believe there is no report on carpet steam cleaners??? There has to be..I've seen everything else in consumer report mag. for many, many years..come on! HELP

I have the same question as several others.
Similar question to the requests for information on steam carpet/tile cleaners. Has Consumer Report reviewed any of the steam mops like the H2O Mop or the Shark steam cleaner?

When you can find someone who isn't affraid of water or getting wet have the carpet shampooers rated.

Add my voice to the general clamor for a review of steam carpet cleaners. I was shocked to find nothing.

I too was searching for info on an upright carpet cleaner. I have been using a rug doctor for years. For those who thought their carpets were left too damp 1)slow down and 2) put some terry towels on the floor and walk on them when you are through.
I have never found a steam vac good at cleaning grout on tile. Best method I have found is a grout brush (hard tooth brush works too) and soft scrub cleanser w/ bleach. Apply cleanser, dip brush in water, and scrub. Wipe away dirt and water with a damp terry cloth towel rinsing often in a bucket of warm water. For large very dirty areas, switch to short hard bristled broom for scrubbing and place terry towel over end of broom for wiping away water and residue.

I would love to know which of the for-rent carpet cleaners you would recommend... rug doctor, etc.

Everyone is asking about steam cleaners, I pay good money for this subscription and demand a response.
I just googled "carpet cleaner reviews" and guess what came up?:

Get Expert Reviews of Top Carpet
Cleaners from Consumer Reports.

www.ConsumerReports.org

What a Joke...you have NO reviews, then why is this posted on the web?

Shame on comsumer reports for being sooooooooooooooooo behind the times on the floor scrubber issue. I am ready to buy after seeing my girlfriends hoover floor scrubber but wanted a consumer reports review. Seems their are a lot of people waiting for an unresponsive consumer reports. I will continue my search for info and will reconsider my membership to this org.

Please review very soon home steam or dry process carpet cleaning machines that can be used to clean all of the carpet in a home. I have allergies and no pets, and I prefer to have a machine that is used in only my home. How effecive are commercial services at cleaning without leaving trace particulates from previous cleaning jobs(allergens, bacteria, etc.)? Can dry processes remove such stains as those tracked in from asphalt parking lots and made by eyeliners, mascara, brow pencils and foundation makeups being dropped and ground in to powder room carpets? Can parts be purchased for more-expensive models should they need repairs?

Please review the steam floor cleaners as the Hoover, Bissell, H20 mop, Rug Doctor, Shark, etc. Do any of them have on/off switches? Can they be used on older no-wax vinyl floors? Are those with carpet attachments effective and safe? Do they require cleaning chemicals? Which have both reusabble as well as disposabe pads? Do they all use pads? Can they be safely be propped against a cabinet or wall should a chair need to be moved, a phone answered, etc?

Please review higher-end models as well as bargain ones. I am interested in getting good value for my money, but am interested in buying only good quality products that my husband and I can handle.

I hope to see these reports very soon and maybe a smaller article to guide should your complete report not be available for some time. I am an appreciative subscriber and a fan of what you do.

I actually subscribed today because i wanted more information on a bare floor cleaner/vaccuum. I came for more information on the HOover Floormate, but there isn't even a review on any in that category at all--just standard vacuum cleaners. Please fill in the gap.

I'm another loser.I join CR for to find info about carpet steam cleaners. I shelled out $26 because I wanted information on floor and carpet cleaners, Looks like money down the drain. Has anyone had experience with the Bissell Proheat 2x ? What a Joke!!!!!!!!!

If ALL of the subscribers above had put our $26. subscription together....we could have bought every brand / type of steam cleaner, floor scrubber, hardwood & tile machine on the market and done our OWN study!!!!

C'mon CR, this is ridiculous already.

Attention Moderator: If you're really reading these, pass our comments up to Management.

I bought a Bissell Proheat 2X Cleanshot for $260 that is still in the box. I want to know if it is worth keeping-----I can't wait until 2009!!!!!

Please test carpet and hard floor cleaners. Our condo has 1000 sq ft of tile and needs a grout cleaner. The estimates have been $500-$700. Looking for a machine to do it ourselves.

Please post a review on steam floor cleaners both for carpet and hardwood and tile with grout. Information is lacking and need is great! I don't want to buy a 500 dollar WhiteWing Steam cleaner or a 1500 dollar ladybug cleaner for my kitchen without an objective review.

Thank you,

Devan

I’m adding my comments to this long long long long list of complaints, as it relates to steam cleaners. I too signed up for the express purpose to research seam carpet cleaners. How much more can we slap CR in the face and say “wake up and give us the information.” Come on CR this is the very core of what you do. Steam carpet cleaners are not, by any means, a new ticket item. Get with it. Hello is anyone listening, listening . . listening . . .listening . . . . listening . . . . . listening?

Ditto on the requests for reviews of carpet cleaners and carpet cleaning companies or methods. I have been looking for quite some time on the website for this info and stumbled on this blog.

My wife needs a new steam cleaner/carpet shampoo-er. Can you help with a recommendation?

Carpet cleaners has been around for years. You really dropped the ball on this one.

Would like review of steam mops.

Like all the other comments, we really need information on steam mops. I hate to shell out $80 plus bucks to find out the mop isn't up to the job. Too bad CR isn't listening to your customers.

Would like to see comparison of steam mops. Is CR planning to do a review? I just subscribed to CR and my first query is for steam mop reviews and nothing on the site. Did I just waste my money subscribing?

The demand is out there people!!! PLEASE rate carpet steamers or explain to your customers why you wont! I would rather clean my own carpets than pay to have someone do it and the Rug Doctors out there for rent aren't up to steam

I, too, would like to see reviews of steam products, such as the hard floor mops, and overall household cleaning (hand helds). Please try and get to them soon.

I too have come to your site to help sort out all of the steam cleaners that are out there in the marketplace. I need one to clean pickeled wood floors as well as bathroom tile floors. I hope you have something coming out soon. Thank you.

Why have we not seen any responses to these questions?
I want to know about the steam mops......

Any info on non-water/steam carpet cleaning like ChemDry??
Do they actually clean and are they safe for pets-Dogs cats ferrets??
HELP

HELP..
I have never been satisfied with any steam carpet cleaners...takes too long to dry and leaves streaks.
Is there any info on non-water/steam carpet cleanersw like ChemDry?
Are they safe for pets...Dogs, Cats and Ferrets???

I am disappointed not to find steam carpet cleaner review. This seems pretty basic.

I am hoping that Consumer Reports will test steam mops. They are very popular right now and I would like to know which would work best with laminate and hardwood floors.

Wow, no CR review of carpet shampooers yet? I bought the Bissel pro-heat years ago and now that it is dead I was going to use my CR subscription to find a good replacement. Guess I will have to rely on the hit/miss reviews on various buyer sites. As these carpet shampooers aren't cheap things you buy every couple of months, I am kinda disappointed that CR has never thought to test them. Oh well, CR still does an great job providing test/reviews and I'm sure that now that they are aware of our desire to see a carpet shampooer reivew they will get right on it.

Need info on floor steam cleaners, IE: H2O steam cleaner. Looks like a lot of peole are requesting information, hopefully you can answer.

Like many others, I too am shocked at the unavailability of ratings for carpet steam cleaners. I have an old Bissel that I purchased over 15 years ago and would like to buy a new one rather than continuing to borrow my mother-in-law's cleaner. My friend and I decided to go in together after I researched Consumer Reports. Well, that was not helpful as there seems to be NO information. What's with that? Can someone let me know when to expect these reviews? I really need a cleaner now.

You have got to be kidding!
I have used this site and mag for years to keep informed as to how to best invest my money when I make a purchase.

As much as it cost to replace carpeting in a home and its so easy to mess it up with a bad carpet cleaner or chemical. I can not believe that you feel its more important to review other items first!

between having pets and dogs how often you have to clean spots as well as other stains. Why would you not have a review. The scarry part is look how many posts you have specific to this one subject.

and yet..... you do't feel its urgent. Hopefully you will act much quicker than "Next year "

I have hickory wood floors and dogs that drool! The slobber is difficult to remove. What is your opinion of a steam cleaning mop on a wood floor and which one do you recommend please? Thank you

I'm really frustrated, too, that there is no info on carpet cleaners. I can't believe CR rates everything from wrinkle creams to cleaning supplies and doesn't rate carpet cleaners! Guess we'll have to rely on other subscribers for advice. So here's mine on steam mops: we finally ditched the Swiffer mop and bought a Shark steam mop and love it. Downside is it's difficult to get the pads clean and after awhile you have to break down and buy more. They're $10 for 2. Still does a much better job than other mops, though (doesn't leave soapy residue, chemicals behind and floors are very clean). That said, anyone have any advice on carpet cleaners? Steam cleaners, ChemDry, etc.?

Also VERY disappointed. Joined to find info on steam mops, small lcd tvs, and small dvd/tv combos and struck out on all counts...

I also wish I would've NOT rejoined today, especially before I found out that CR has NOT reviewed steam mops. Thanks to everyone for leaving info on them, @ least now I have some idea about which one to buy TODAY.

I just signed up with CR to find info on steam cleaners for hard floors. I was extremly dissapointed to find that there were no reviews. Please get with it. I probably won't renew next month. I plan on taking a chance on the Haan floor sanitizer. Good luck to me!!!!

After reading comments from March, thru this date--10/17/08 HAVING JUST SIGNED UP WITH c-r TO FIND INFORMATION ON HARD FLOOR STEAM CLEANERS--I GUESS THEIRS NOTHING MORE THAT I CAN SAY EXCEPT--SHAME ON YOU!!!! WILLIAM J.

Regarding steam cleaners, PLEASE evaluate for tile and linoleum as well. We have gotten rid of all of our carpets, but are wanting to buy a steam cleaner for our hard floors, ASAP.

I have great respect for the ratings of Consumer Reports, but cannot understand why there is no response to all these requests for information about rug shampooers. I too am looking to purchase one and desperately need information.

need to spend my money very carefully in these uncertain times and count on consemer reports to help me. However, i am getting no help this time. I need information on the seam mops i see on television...Help

I saw your editor's note: "We've read your comments about the desire to see a report on carpet cleaners/shampooers. Consumer Reports is planning a testing-based project of carpet cleaners, including steam models. We expect to publish a report in a 2009 issue.—Editor, June 2, 2008"

What I did not see was any acknowledgement that you've seen all the other requests for a CR report on "steamers" (i.e., not just steam carpet cleaners). As I'm looking for creditable information for consumers about use of "steam mops" for hard wood floors, tile floors, linoleum floors, etc., I'm wondering if your upcoming article will provide any information for the scores of folks such as I who are looking to CR for reliable testing information relative to steam-based products for this type of use.

I am interested in purchasing an under counter ice maker, but have not found any reviews! It must be able to accept an overlay panel. I need help choosing!

I can only comment on the one steam cleaner I have now. I have a Hoover and I have used it quite often as I have 3 dogs and beige carpets. It is still going strong after 8 or more years. I cannot see how adding a deodorizer in the cleaning solution would effect the cleaning in anyway. It does matter which cleaning solution you use though.

I've read all the comments about steam cleaners and know you will be doing one in 2009. I'm also interested in the H2O steam mop to especially clean the grout in my ceramic tile on my bathroom floor and eventually in my kitchen. This is a back-breaking job and my knees aren't getting any younger. Hopefully you'll do these reviews early in 2009 as I would like to purchase one as soon as possible. Thank you.

I need a carpet cleaner at home! I saw one at COSTCO today but being the conscienscious consumer that I am I came straight home and hopped onto my CR site. Whaaaatttt no reviews? You gotta be joking!!!! Come on CR, we're not "all" buying new cars, plasmas and large appliances. Get on with it, already!

It is now November and I HAVE to buy a carpet cleaner/scrubber this weekend to prepare for entertaining!! HELP>>>Consumer Affairs Editors.....we are still waiting!!! And what about Shark steam cleaners for floors? This is very frustrating. I feel like I have wasted my membership this year as the research I've done has been related to exterior paint and carpet cleaners and steam floor cleaners; and the latter two have been to no avail.

Hey Consumer Reports,

Why no reviews on carpet steamers/cleaners? I joing thinking you were more comprehensive that you are.

I'm very dissapointed with CR. The things I need to know about don't seem to be covered by you. Steam cleaners and water softeners aren't even mentioned in your reviews. Don't look to me for a renewal of your services next year.

This is why I declined renewal of my online CR subscription--for lack of product information when I needed it!

For all of you looking for information "now" on steam cleaners for carpet or hard flooring go to www.epinions.com and type in the brand & model# you are interested in. Most of the products have reveiws by everyday people using the product and what they think. It's not perfect but gives you an idea what machine may work for you.

I do agree that Consumers Reports has to follow up on products quickly because in this day and age they are outdated within a month or two.

I've been a consumer report customer for years.I really need to get a carpet cleaner. No one is buying cars right now. I can't wait for 2009. Need clean for xmas.

Well, seems we all agree about the dissappointment we have about the "NO INFO ON CARPET CLEANERS". Can't add to the blogs who have expressed the concern of why did we "SUBSCRIBE". Okay Ladies maybe our ????? about why, what gives, why subscribe, etc. will motivate the team looking out for the CONSUMERS?????

CR, you say you will publish a review of carpet cleaners, including steam, in a 2009 issue. Early 2009 or late 2009? Even early 2009 is too far away.

I agree with others who say that your reviews are outdated by the time they are published.

I too looked for a report on steam mops. Well I have done my own research.
Lysol Steam Mop (about $40.00) Did an ok job but the tank holds a very small amount of water and it takes forever to heat up. Also doesn't dampen the cover very well - probably need to start with a damp cover.
Shark Steam Mop did a good job of tile and grout but every time I pushed down on the handle it flexed a lot and I felt it would eventually fail. Was a little heavy to operate.
Bissell Steam Mop Was the best one so far but I have about 1000 sq feet of tile and wore holes in the pad with the first use. Reported failure to Bissell and they told me that they had never had that complaint before and were very unconcerned.
Finally I purchased a Thane H20 It is fantastic. Does a great job on tile and grout. Takes less pressure to work the mop on the tile and the pads didn't wear out. Also the water tank was a good size and did not add noticeable weight to the machine. Also had a control switch on the handle that produced steam on demand which the other steamers lacked. It was by far the easiest to use. The only negataive is that it does not fit behind the toilets as well as the others.
The Bissell, Shark and H20 all cost about $100 so price was not a factor.
Hands down the H20 performed extremely well. I purchased mine at WalMart in Canada. I have only seen them at Bed Bath and Beyond in the US. Can be purchased on line.
I have no connection to any of the above firms.

I wish there had been a review on Consumer Reports Online before I subscribed. So far, in the 2 months since I paid for it, NOT ONE of the three things I was looking for have been here, including steam floor cleaners!

Obviously, I am not alone. Wonder if they read these comments

I only subscribed to check out the reviews for carpet shampooers. What a GREAT disappointment you haven't tested them! Why not test shampooers early in '09 and appease the impatient masses?

Ridiculous, I came here to find info like the rest of these people. now i'm just happy that i was Not suckered into wasting the subscription fee to NOT FIND any of the information i was looking for. i want a Steam mop NOW, and have my doubts as to whether these will even be reviewed in 2009, guess i'll check back again in 2012 to (possibly) find some information!!

Can you be more specific as to when or which issue will have the information on "steam cleaners" for both carpet and tile floors in 2009? Thanks so very much.

I just joined to help me decide which carpet cleaner to buy. I am very disapointed that you have not tested this product. What else have you not studied? It appears that your service will not work for me.

I also would like to find out about the H2O steam mops (e.g. shark steam mop) for an example, of which H2O steam mops works the best and doesn't leak, etc.

I, too, am searching for a steam/vapor floor cleaner. I bought a Shark for my daughter (four children, do & bird) and it broke at the stress point - rod to pad/steam outlet connection within an hour of use. Prices range fro $69 to $2,000 plus.

The carpet cleaners article is not what I need - Re your: "NOTE: We've read your comments about the desire to see a report on carpet cleaners/shampooers. Consumer Reports is planning a testing-based project of carpet cleaners, including steam models. We expect to publish a report in a 2009 issue.—Editor, June 2, 2008"

I'm in the market for a steam hard floor clean, can anyone recommend a good one since cr has not done any testing yet?

I am interested in the carpet shampooer/steam cleaner analysis to assist my clients in choosing for their homes
AND I don't intent to subscribe unless this info is available.
Thank you

Looking for information on Steam cleaners like everyone else. Is there something over your website yet?

Really disappointed that there's no info/report/comparison on the steam floor mops! Obviously important to those of us who want clean & sanitized floors. When might you cover this subject??

I also joined to find out more about professional carpet cleaning methods and steam cleaners for home owners. Come on Consumer Reports. Why can't you respond quicker than 2009???

Yep, looking for carpet shampooer info also. Keep in mind that not only the machine, but the chemicals make a large difference. This may be the problem with reporting, but as long as they follow Mft. Instructions & Chemicals they can be unbiased. If you do purchase one - NOT using the Manufacturer's recommended chemicals could provide better or worse cleaning results (or damage to the machine). I can't say the name of the chemicals I prefer, as I'm not advertising, but I can say my expereience with recommended chemicals is poor so I use a different brand.

I don't think I would like a dry erase refrigerator.....doesn't seem right.

I bought the SHARK floor steamer and am very happy with it. It works just as advertised. It does NOT leave a wet floor. I do not over-fill it with water. It comes with 4-5 good pads for the steaming and they are easily washable. Do not use softener on those pads, or any other type of cloth or towel that you clean with, as it can leave smear marks.

I bought the "SHARK" floor steamer in November 2008. I have used it 3 times and am very happy with it. It does exactly what it says it will do....clean and steam the floors. It does NOT leave a wet floor. Maybe because I do not over-fill it. It comes with at least 4-5 cleaning pads that are easily washable. Do not use softener on them, or any other type of cleaning or dusting towel that you use. It can leave "smear" marks on glass and other surfaces.

Steam Carpet Cleaners, I see the editor as of June 2008 plans on doing a review of Carpet Cleaners / Steam Carpet Cleaners.

I have been using Consumer Reports for almost everything we buy, we have had wonderful expierences with everything that we have purchased after reviewing them.

Our current carpet cleaner is about dead. I need to start reviewing carpet cleaners & Steam Carpet cleaners NOW.

I would like to know when you plan on releasing this review? I am quite sure that you already know when you will be publishing this review.

There are many readers like myself that are waiting.

Please let us know when this will be so that we can make a decision.

Thank you

Ray & Wanda

Looking for ratings for steam mops (Shark, H2O, etc) and hand held steam cleaners. See the June 02, 2008 Editor's note and hope these are available sooner vs. later. What is the projected availability?

Carpet cleaners/ shampooers, where's the info. Come on guys!

I too am trying to get the lowdown on floor steam cleaners. can not find a whole lot of info. This would a natural for Cr to do a report on as more and more of us are putting in tile and/or wood floors.

Please report on carpet cleaners as the areas in my house that need carpet cleaning grow each day.

So CR?? It is 2009, when is the report coming? It is unbelievable how long it takes to test a few steam cleaners. Please update your disappointed subscribers.

I was very disapointed to find no comparisons among Carpet cleaners. It was a complete waste of money joining consumer reports.

Hello, Hello, Member since 3/04 .......... What is up with reviews on steam cleaners ie sharks etc. etc. etc. your article on previews has been out for a year now and still no reviews??? You have many articles to display on steam irons......really, steam irons....I have never known one not to work....gets hot and you rub it on your clothes until the wrinkles fall out. great.

Now, there are dozens of steam cleaning appliances (not carpet) machines on the market with reviews saying they do work and reviews saying they don't work.....get on your J....O....B....and give us the skinny on these machines !!!

When in 2009 will you have the report on steam mops? Please I need one badly and was going to buy on today based on your advice.

How long does it take to give us info. on
steam carpet cleaners? Sometime last Sept. or Oct., the blog noted there would be info. in Feb. I checked my Feb. issue and NADA! Now the blog just says 2009... C'mon, my carpet needs cleaning.

Can you provide an update as to when you will report on carpet cleaners/steamers, as I'm need to purchase one?

Okay it's the end of Feb. 2009 when are you going to have something on Carpet Shampooers. I need to buy one now!

With this many comments, I would think you guys would do a survey on carpet cleaners and recommendations. What's the hold-up?

We have also been waiting for this review. Any time-line yet?

Does Consumer Reports have plans to review steam carpet cleaners?

I just joined to find out which steam mop is the best and came to this page. I was ready to order one today! When will the reviews be done?

I am disabled and really need to have a reliable steam cleaner for tile floors. I keep waiting for CR to publish reviews as promised. However, nothing has been published. Please do not wait much longer as there are many of us who rely upon CR to inform us of the best product available. After all, that is why we use CR. Thanks.

I came on the site this morning to see the test results of steam mops and there have been no tests done. I would like to see tests done of all the types and which works best and how long they work. I have been on amazon and seen the remarks there and it's confusing and I want one but can't waste my money on one that won't work or won't work for very long.

CU will you please POST that you do not reply to Post.

Thanks,

Cliff

I will add my voice to the requests for reviews on carpet cleaners. With the high cost of professional cleaning, a machine can pay for itself with one or two cleanings, if indeed it can do the job.

I am also interested in hard floor cleaners and I've been looking for reviews but not found them. I've been looking at a several microfiber mops, having been disappointed in a steam cleaner type device. But only the commercial type microfiber systems can be purchased with some sort of bucket and wringer and those are just WAY too expensive. There must be something that works. Please help us find it!

I have a 6-year-old Hoover Steam Vac Dual V carpet cleaner that has a wash/rinse switch. The idea is that you can rinse the carpet without having to empty the detergent solution in clean water tank because there is a separate detergent bottle. Unless you are doing a quick cleanup, you will go through a tank or more of solution, so this will not save you any time.
After about 2 years (only 1 year warranty), the seal on the detergent bottle weakened and detergent leaks into the water tank---no more rinse only. After about 2.5 years, the seal from the water tank to the machine goes. Now I have a small leak running from under my water tank onto my machine.
Unless you have pets or small children and therefore will be using it 10 times or more in the first year, you are better off renting one. If you do buy one, I recommend buying one of the cheaper models without the separate detergent bottle. Lastly, the wider the better because you will need fewer passes to get the job done.

OK, let me add my disappointment that there is CR has not reviewed any of the floor steam cleaners. I just joined for that specific reason and hope that the CR review will come out very soon.

Please do a review of vapor steam cleaners for all surfaces. Please include the Desiderio Plus and The Ladybug tanc. Please include types that have vacuum or extractor abilities.

I saw a note that a review was being done on carpet cleaners including types that have steam. Please note the appliances I am describing are different.

The cost of some of the vapor steam cleaners, for all surface, is thousands of dollars. So, I would like to see your review before I purchase. The internet seems to have no unbiased reviews on the products (almost all reviews being completely postive).

Please hurry!!!!!

Please do an article the steam mops that can be used on laminate, hardwood and ceramic tile floors. I have seen demonstrations of several brands at different home shows. The only one I have seen in stores is the Shark brand. I have no idea if they are worth the $100-150 price or if they actually work as promised.

I subscribed to CR today to get test results on steam mops. I wanted to order one today, but alas, no information. How much longer before you will have information?

I also came to this website searching for info on Steam Floor Cleaners. I have seen several info commercials with various claims. Has anyone purchased either the SHARK vs BISSEL and provide comments?

Just wondering if there is an update as to what issue the carpet steamer/cleaner/shampooers will be in for 2009. We are in need of one and would like to see the report if possible.

Can you tell me when your report for home use carpet cleaners/shampooers will be....which issue in 2009?

Looking for a consumer report on floor scrubbers. Currently have a Hoover Floor Mate and was needing to replace it AGAIN replacing it every other year right now and want to find something that will last a little longer.

I have an 8 year old Bissell carpet cleaner with an obvious broken part that is no longer available. The furniture attachment works perfectly, however, the carpet cleaner will not work without the unavailable broken part. Consequently, I'm in the market for a new machine and would appreciate your review. Secondly, how do I recycle the old machine? It seems a shame to throw it in a landfill.

The second page I've found with almost 10 pages asking for reviews on wet mops, or steam cleaners. Why do you continue to ignore what many so desperatly want. I wasted $26 today looking for 2 items, Steam cleaners/floor mops and Breadmakers, and no reviews on either. Just some buying advice on breadmakers.

I bought my Bissell "Powersteamer" (no steam, why the name?) A few year ago with absolutely no help from CR. The catch tank for the used water is filthy, with absolutely no hope to clean out the sand, hair, and unmentionable debris that has accumulated.
Just paid good money to re-up my subscription and still no testing or comparisons. This one is just about worn out, so hurry up!

Im steamed, no info on any type of steam cleaning units. This is a dirty deal. Get your "dirt" together!

Please at least reply back to those of us who are requesting reviews on the carpet steam cleaner......It is now April 2009 and still no reviews per your 2008 statement. Just an update as to when we can expect to see it would be great.

I've been waiting since '08 for CR to give feedback on Shark Steam Vac. The infomercial is so tempting. I just wish CR had some sort of review on this product since it's been on the market for so long. I'm very curious to know why CR hasn't reviewed/tested ANY steam mops? I just find this very interesting since there's so many on the market/informercials??

I posted this evening looking specifically for information on steam cleaners, not carpet cleaners but for ceramic tile and grout.

Why can't I find any information here?

The carpet cleaner type and the hard floor, tile grout and surfaces are two different kinds of cleaners. Please get this research out there, soon. Yesterday.

Thank you

A lot of people looking for information on the steam cleaners for laminate, hardwood, and tile floors. I thought I would check too just to see if I purchased a dud or not and now see I wouldn't have been able to find any information on them except the recommendation from a friend here in flood torn ND who has hardwood floors and two large dogs and lives in the country and purchased one. Actually I think she got hers used and she swears by it. So much so I purchased a floor steam cleaner and am about to use it today Hopefully CR will publish something soon at least to tell us they are working on the issue. The research does take time but I wonder how long it takes to test the products

I'm yet another person who just subscribed specifically in regard to the steam mops.

I've been doing some extensive surfing and belive that the Reliable Steamboy and Steamfast Multi-Purpose Steam Cleaner may be two of the best - BUT we need you CR to tell us which one do we want to buy or are they all garbage?? There's a lot of us out here in the housekeeping business looking to work smarter not harder.

It's the 4th month of 2009 already - the inquirys in regard to these type of mops are dating back to october of last year! What if i say pretty please with sugar on the top? Will that bring the review faster?

can't believe all the comments for information on steam mops. I, too am VERY INTERESTED in learning which steam mop is the best buy for my money. PLEASE HELP!

Please post ratings on carpet cleaners/steamers/shampooers.
Thanks

C'mon, CR, give us the dirt on steam mops! Like a few of your other readers, I have cats...three of them...and their manner of eating requires them to first pull a chunk of food out of their dish and drop it on the laminate wood floor. I'm tired of moving furniture and hauling around buckets of water and a mop, changing water constantly, and getting down on my hands and knees to towel off the wet stuff.

But thanks for the tip about using vinegar and water.

Just added another room with laminate flooring and looking to put hardwood floor throughout house this summer. Guess I will purchase the Hoover Floor Mate and take my chances. Would have been nice to have had a product review though.

CR you let me down! I need to purchase a carpet cleaner now - I am tired of wasting my money renting. Plus, I want something of my own - so I know where it has been. Lets get busy researching!

Any time frame for the report on carpet cleaners???
Thanks for an update. I too had joined to check out the information on carpet cleaners.

I took an waiting for a review on carpet scrubbers. How many people have to write in until you do one?

I remember in 2008 you said you'd do a review of carpet cleaning machines. I could have built my own by now. I will not renew my subscription!

Try the Euro Pro Monster Canister or the Wagner 905 Canister--the Monster has a stainless steel boiler; the Wagner is larger. Also, Mc Culloch did well, too, it seems. You may want to check these three out, as they seem to be rated very well on user reviews.....I believe the canister floor cleaners are best, as they come with attachments for grout, etc. Still haven't made up my mind yet......Good luck, PC

P.S. I do trust Consumer Reports Evaluations above any other sources....they are thorough, and I, too, wish they would do a study of the steam cleaners--as well as to distinguish between the effectiveness of canister types over the upright models.

I am adding my name to the legion of customers "demanding" research on STEAM MOPS.
From reading the previous I see it's been an on-going demand.
When is CR going to listen?????????

Come on already reviews the steam mops. There are only 3 - 4 out there really getting sold. How hard can it be to squeeze in a review on something seemingly this simple with NO moving parts? The only things that go wrong ae the housing, the steam charging unit or the pads.

I,too, came to this site for more information about VAPOR steam cleaners. From what I've read, there's a big difference between steam cleaners and VAPOR steam cleaners. I'm looking to purchase the latter, not only for cleaning purposes, but also as a pest control (i.e. fleas) tool.

I am absolutely blown away at the fact that you STILL haven't reviewed carpet steam cleaners!!! I've been waiting for a VERY long time now. What the fuzzy is up here? Every year when I pay my yearly subscription fee I trust that pretty much everything I need to buy will have been tested, with recommendations, by you. Sad to say there have been a number of items I needed info on and you didn't have any. I'm seriously considering cancelling my subscription this year.

Wow, the irony... I'm looking for info on steam mops and come across this article which promised last June to review steam carpet cleaners, and just today (May 22 of 2009, a few days shy of the one year anniversary of CR promising to do a review) I see in the website sidebar that the promised report finally was published.

So... at this rate, when should we expect to see the highly requested steam mop review? Sometime in 2011? Seriously, I've been reading CR since I was a kid, but the past few years the quality seems to be really heading downhill fast. Not to mention that the website is absolutely horrendous when it comes to searching for and finding specific reviews and information.

I do appreciate the work CR does for all us consumers, but if you don't get your act together and transition gracefully into the digital era, this magazine is doomed to fail along with all the other archaic print media companies that just don't get it.

I'm in the same boat as the rest of you guys - waiting, waiting, waiting. Desperately need to steam clean some heavy traffic areas in the house, but all the "reputable" carpet cleaners I've contacted charge by the room - and by the time you pay for the Scotchguard, it comes up to nearly $300. I live in a small house with small rooms and can't afford to pay the same price as someone with a large house and large rooms. Guess until CR gets their act together, I'll just keep doing it the hard way.

As a retired business owner with customers I send this piece of advice. If you have unhappy customers who have lost their trust in your company then you can expect they will leave in search of that warm fuzzy feeling we all had in the beginning of our relationship with you. Be wise enough to calm the anxiety by keeping in touch with us. A once a month posting, newsletter if you will, on your progress would be one way to address the issues. If you already have something like this that we don't know about then please let us know. Thank you!

My carpets are filthy. I know I can buy a machine for the cost of professional cleaning AND have the unit for the next time. I've tied the dry granules and it does ok for light to medium soiled, but I have lots of stains.I need advice. Some new steam cleaners are available. Where's the report?????

I am dying to buy a steam mop, but of course I have to research the differences in quality, price, etc. So I opened my bible (CR) and have found nothing yet. I do see a lot of requests so I'm adding my name to the call for Steam Mop reccomendations. Thanks, Abbie

SD you ever answer questions? I have seen many questions on when you are going to test steam mops (h2o, shark, ect.)but have not seen any reply from consumer reports on when or if you plan on testing these items. Do you respond to individual emails like this one?

I am only one of myriad of others who is seeking advice on floor cleaners, which appears that CR is not responding. SSSSoooooooooooo

HELLO OUT THERE!!! I SEE THAT YOU ARE REVIEWING COMMENTS BUT IS THERE ANYONE READING THEM??? WHERE'S THE REPORT???

Please do a review of steam mops.

I just signed up to get a review on the 'hard surface steamer floor cleaner' & now I see there is no write up. Is that because by buying & using one of these it puts a strain on the professional rug cleaners and/or rental income from Lowes or Home Depot?

Also looking for reviews on portable scrubbers and also steam cleaners ... looks like one of many!

I as well am looking for information on portable steam cleaners. CR seems to be more interested in reviewing cars! Why don't you leave that to Car & Driver and other publications who focus on cars. Or maybe you should name your publication Consumers Car Reports.

OK, in the absence of a CR report on steam mops, here is my very unprofessional opinion. I've tried the Shark (the more expensive one) and the Bissell - sorry no model numbers available but both cost about $100, the Shark at Canadian Tire & the Bissell at London Drugs, and both were purchased within the past year. I have three dogs, which is twelve muddy dog feet, and bad knees so I can't get on my hands & knees to clean the floors properly. I have hardwood so I don't want something that will leave water on the floor, and one of the dogs is quite elderly so we're starting to see "accidents" here & there. I've been using the "orange" products and thought I could just add some to the steam mop water to take care of any smells, but both steamers quit working, the Shark after three uses, and the Bissell after two, so that was obviously a bad idea. I want one with a large reservoir and a long cord & I'm not interested in having to go buy distilled water to put in it (for heaven's sake, I live on tap water, why can my floor cleaner?), so I'm going to go buy the cheapest one I can find with the longest cord & largest reservoir & just pre-spray the floor. Hope this helps!

Please review the Haans Steam Sanitizer, commercial states it's for all types of flooring. Please advise.

I also joined primarily to check out cleaning solutions for tile flooring. I am quite disappointed that there is no reviews and ratings.

Step on up anytime CR.

Just thought I would add my two cents, about how dispointed I am that there is no information on steam mops. I almost always count on consumer report to help me with my decision on appliance purchases. I guess not this time

I have been waiting for over a year to see a posting about the various steam mops/cleaners. and still no posting. When can we expect a posting from CR regarding this topic. I really am interested in purchasing a cleaner, but I want to be sure that I'm armed with the best information possible before putting out my money.

I am very disappointed with CR. I am not a yearly subscriber because I do not make many large purchases but I regularly will subscribe on a monthly basis when it is time for a larger purchase (car, washer, etc.) However, I am now looking to buy a cleaner for my new Pergo flooring and an SOOOOO disappointed to find that CR has yet to review any products despite so many requests from its loyal customers. As a company who strives to be a voice for consumers to large companies, CR is not listening to its own consumers!

It has been more than a year since Consumer Reports stated that it planned to publish a report on carpet cleaners in 2009. Since then a buyers' guide has been published. Is that it? Is a ratings report going to be published? With only six issues left in 2009, you must know when it's going to be published by now. Right? Why the silence? Please tell us.

want to buy a hard surface steam or clean machine for the 2000sq tile surface in my home...not to mention the grout...there has got to be a great product that makes it easier....

I have read comments from your subscribing audience concerning Carpet Shampooers as well as a rating on the numerous national carpet shampoo companies that all claim they are the best.

I think you have rated every vacuum cleaner made several times
during the last several years....enough already with the vacuums.

The most expensive item about having a carpet is ...
#1 the cost of the carpet and #2 the cleaning and maintenance of these carpets. Vacuum Cleaners cost are amortised over several years and therefore are not that expensive in comparison to laying out a minimum of at least $300. every year to professionally clean a carpet.

I have read several responses from your frustrating reading public as well as notes Consumer Reports wrote they would have the aforementioned article in 2 /09 Well your article is about 4 months late. With a 10% unemployment rate in the USA it seems there would be many qualified people to study and produce the requested information.

THANKS...........

I'm wondering about professional carpet cleaning services. I already have a Bissel home carpet cleaner and it does quite well for spots and some stains. But, ultimately, most carpets (at least mine) needs a good professional clean every 18 mos. or so.
I'm wondering if I should go with a professional steam cleaner company - maybe a big one like Stanley Steamer or if any local steam cleaning company will do? I, also, wonder about the Chem Dry type of cleaning. I have 2 cats and a dog and would like to know what works best on pet odors but is safe for pets too. I couldn't seem to find any info like this on the CR website. I guess I'll see what the BBB says about my local carpet cleaners and just make a best guess until CR gets going on ALL floor cleaning products. Lots of us now have tile & laminate instead of vinyl and carpet. In fact I only have one room with carpeting. So, I'd also like to know about steam/vapor cleaners. It seems like CR is falling out of touch with current trends and the needs of their customers. I hope they catch up soon.

A June 2, 2008 CR Editor's note stated: "We've read your comments about the desire to see a report on carpet cleaners/shampooers. Consumer Reports is planning a testing-based project of carpet cleaners, including steam models. We expect to publish a report in a 2009 issue.—Editor, June 2, 2008"

Well, it's June, 2009 now, that Editor's note was posted a year ago, 2009 is half over, and still nothing in CR about carpet cleaners.

I'm tired of the cost and hassle of renting one; I want to clean my carpets and I am past ready to buy a machine to do it. I'm relying on CR testing to determine which is the recommended one to purchase so I'm waiting, but I've been hanging on for 6 months into 2009 now, looking for that promised report to be published... WHEN, C.R., WHEN??????

I have been needing a clothes steamer for quite some time and have been waithing for some advice from CR. Anything in the future from you or do any of your faithful subscribers have any suggestions?

I to need reviews of steam cleaners, asap. thanks.

Please hurrry with review of steam cleaners,ASAP

Well, we're pretty disappointed. As the leader in brand comparisons, Consumer Reports was the source we turned to when choosing a carpet cleaner for our home. We found exactly zip when we looked, then we saw that a report is supposed to come out in 2009. It's July 2009. Will we be seeing a report anytime soon? We are looking for an unbiased comparison between brands, but it looks like we will have to wait.

I just got online to look up steam floor cleaners and read complaints regarding lack of reviews that were over a year old! Unfortunately this is not the first time I have been disappointed with CR. Add me to the huge list of unsatisfied customers.

I am currently looking for info on home owned steam carpet cleaners. Has the report been completed?

As to those asking about the floor steam cleaners, I have an H20 sgteam cleaner and it is fantastic on tile floors. It says it will spot clean carpets, but I didn't find that to be efficient at all

I am so disappointed that there are no reviews on carpet cleaners - the reason I've subscribed so I'll go now and cancel my subscription!

Where are the reviews on steam cleaners (NOT steam carpet cleaners) ,but do it all and laminate floor steam cleaners specifically. How many people need to request this for CR to at least answer why you do not have reviews?

I, like several other members, just joined CR to better evaluate steam cleaners, and I'm extremely disappointed that there's NOTHING on these products that have been available for a number of years now. If I'm going to spend a thousand dollars or more, I'd surely like to be reassured that I'm getting my money's worth!!

I have a Steam Fast clothes steamer that has required repair about once a year (3 times now) and it needs it again. So I am looking for a more reliable replacement but can't find any reviews on clothes/garment steamers. Have clothes steamers been tested & reviewed?

I subscribed today specifically to get info on floor steam cleaners only to find that is none. why not? Subscribers have been asking for a long time. Unless something is posted soon I will cancel subscription.

your web master needs to improve your site. it is nice to see highlights of comments by consumers, but when I click onto a highlight to read the whole submission, I am sent to a page that I need to then navigate and read every entry by CR and all consumers before I might find the one particular one that I want - happens every time.

A NOTE TO CR MEMBERS: I have read [and submitted my own] comments re why won't CR do a review of carpet steam cleaners and more importantly, why won't CR post a response to all the requests. Well, when looking for something else, serendipity struck and I found a CR note stating they in fact will review carpet steam cleaners and sometime in 2009 the results will be published in their magazine.

I just joined specifically to get information & comparison on a carpet steam cleaner...can't believe you have nothing on it.

I need information on hardwood floor steamers. Now, not next year.

It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I so need to purchase a new steam cleaner and am running out of time. Have had my Hoover for over a decade. It has been great but a very sick dog is causing me to think a newer stronger one would be better. When do you expect to publish your 2009 report? I would so like your input before laying out the cash. Please help!!

Hi all,

I just called CR to see when in 2009 they plan on publishing the long awaited carpet cleaner report(as their editor said they would back in 6/08). (I am running out of time to wait!!!!) They referred me to their head office, Consumers Union. I was unable to get any usable response. They said it would not be in the Oct issue, possibly Nov??, not December, possibly Jan??? They don't know and would not let me speak to the department that would tell me if it is even a possibility--if not, I just want to know! I was also not allowed to speak with the editor's office to ask them where they stood on their commitment. The very nice woman did agree to forward my concern to the editors along with my contact info--she did not know if I would hear back, but promised to forward it (didn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside!) If I hear anything, I will pass it along.
