This refrigerator has two freezer drawers but offers less usable capacity than other French-door models we’ve tested
Price we paid: $2,650
What it is. This French-door, bottom-freezer refrigerator with a claimed 24.9-cubic-foot capacity features two full-extension freezer drawers, part of what the manufacturer calls “armoire styling.” The PGSS5PJX[SS] stands 70 inches high x 36 inches wide x 33 inches deep, and it’s equipped with LED lighting, an icemaker, and a through-the-door water dispenser with LCD controls.
What we liked. The double freezer drawers provide easy organization of and access to items in the freezer. The configuration also allows you to reach the upper storage compartments with one move instead of the typical two you’d have to make with a single-drawer French-door refrigerator. This GE Profile model has also proved to be very quiet in our ongoing noise tests.
What we didn’t like. Because there’s a mullion between the upper and lower freezer drawers—basically a bar that separates them—you can access only about 60 percent of the usable freezer capacity we measured. By comparison, the LG LFX25980 French-door model we’re also testing provides nearly 70 percent of our measured freezer space.
In addition, this GE has merited only good scores for energy efficiency, and it is hard to reach the on/off switch for the icemaker.
Our initial take.
The double-drawer freezer provides some nice conveniences, but a
conventional single-drawer bottom-freezer offers a lot more usable
space than the PGSS5PJX[SS]. What’s more, GE has been among the more
repair-prone brands of bottom-freezer refrigerators.Essential information: Look for our full report on refrigerators in the May 2008 issue of Consumer Reports, on sale and online in April. Yeah well the LG is made by Lucky Goldstar in Korea.
I'd take the General Electric or look at Amana or Maytag's offerings, first.
The GE models feature the LED lighting, the Samsung models have conventional(at least ones I've seen). The GE has 1 less temperature control on slide out deli....Does the GE have the same "ripple" effect on the door panels as the Samsung, and does it also have the low ice production for which some Samsung's have?? I understand that was during a 3 month period of time, and the recall is to change the gearing in the ice maker/ejector....and possibly the fan cooling initiation.
I believe those 2 models you were talking about of the GE(double or single lower drawer) in that 24.9 ft3 are made by Samsung.whose plant faces the LG plant on the same road in Seoul, Korea.
So, aren't General Electric appliances mostly made in China now, by Hoo-Nos-Hoo? Maytag has been poor in reliability in CR's past issues as well.
I bought the GE Profile French Door Stainless refrigerator last November. Loved the design and capacity in the fridge part as well as the ice maker and water dispenser on the door and the LED lights inside. Less than 5 months later the ice maker stopped working. I could not remove the ice tray to inspect since it was frozen shut. Two days later the ice maker began overflowing water all outside the fridge and onto the floor. Had I been out of town it would have continued to leak throughout the kitchen. Unfortunately, I had not not installed a separate shut off valve for the fridge from the faucet so I could not shut off the water without shutting off the sink water. There is no way to turn off the ice maker.
Fortunately, the repairman removed the water filter, which automatically stops the flow of water, and ordered a new ice maker and control panel. He said that it was a known defect and supposedly the new control panel will not allow water to continue to flow. Before he came back to replace the ice maker, I had to unplug my fridge for 24 hours to allow the ice maker to defrost so the repairman could remove the old tray and replace. That was an inconvenience since I had to remove the frozen foods to another location while defrosting.
I took the advice from my Mom when she bought a new fridge. She insisted on me buying the extended warranty due to replacing her ice maker 3 times in less than 2 years after buying.
GE was very responsive in sending a repairman within a few days and then the new part arrived in less than a week. They were not helpful in the inconvenience of having to clean out my freezer and take to another location. They said that was my problem!
I guess I'll just wait till the next time it breaks and hope that I don't come home to a flooded house.
I have had so many problems with my GE fridge and would highly recommend staying far, far away from their refridgerators. I have spent hundreds of dollars trying to fix a defective GE that I purchased at Lowe's in 2006 that is no longer under warranty. There was a lawsuit and settlement regarding GE's side-by-side stainless steel fridges but not all model #'s were included. I have had GE repair come to my house two times and they claim there is nothing wrong with it which is totally false. My fridge makes really loud noises all day long, the icemaker stopped working and my freezer doesn't defrost. Buy another manufacturers fridge!
I bought a GE Profile 25.5 CU french door refrigerator in December of 2007. A month later, the ice maker broke EXACTLY as Alan Sessions said in his post. GE came out and fixed it, and the repairman said that this happens "all of the time". It is April 2008, and it happened again. We want out!!!! GE doesn't care - they will continue to fix it as long as the warranty is in effect, I am POSITIVE that it will keep on breaking, so we are out of luck.
We will NEVER touch another GE product again, after this experience. We are trying to convince the store that they sold us a bad design, and hopefully we can get into a Bosch or a Gen-Aire: something made by a reputable company.
Dealing with problems with my GE Profile this week has been very much like a bad dream. My Profile is one year old, and 2 technicians have misdiagnosed the problem - after taking 3 days off from work and finally getting them to show up! I'll never purchase another GE appliance based on the really poor customer service I've received. Good thing I still have my 20+ yr. old fridge as a back up!
I bought the french door fridge because it looked like we would have more usable space, this is not the case. It is nice when storing large items like cakes and trays. The only complaint I have is that the lid to the meat drawer comes completely off EVERY TIME YOU OPEN IT. It can take 2-3 minutes to replace it. This is very annoying. Other than that we like our unit.
My GE Profile french door refrigerator has an ice maker that makes so much noise all day long it is ridiculous. We have to tell house guests who stay overnight what all the noise is that they will be hearing as the ice maker shoots the cubes across the unit and slams them into the bin. Now the ice bin is frozen to the unit and will not release. Any suggestions?
I also had a terrible time with GE service not being able to send the correct replacement door for this new unit when it was delivered with a small dent in the left door. After 4 months and having them deliver 1) a plain white right door, 2) a plain white left door [no ice maker or water unit], 3) a stainless steel door with ice and water, and 4) AHA! The correct white left door with water and ice came and was successfully installed. Thank goodness that the local GE service tech got in on the action. Overall, while the refrigerator is convenient to use, the mechanics are questionable. If there really was a recall on ice makers, I'd like to hear about it.
We bought the ge profile french door while i love the frig and fortunately have not had the water leakage or frozen ice cube issues we do continue to have a problem with food sometime freezing we have it set as recommended in the book but again tonight i came home to frozen strawberries? Any one else have this issue or an idea of what can be done to eliminate it? We do take great care as to not block the vents at the top of the inside of the frig as that is what GE informed us may be causing this.
We got the fridge with the two upper doors and the bottom mount freezer in November2006. Last week the fridge was warm and the freezer was frozen, but seemd unable to maintain the programmed temp.
Tech #1 came out and swapped a "board" (computer circuit board). Two days later tech #2 was called with same symptoms, said the board was bad, installed new board.
Today we are waiting for visit #3 with a third board and some diagnostic computer...
Fridge had been cycling between normal and room temp, now seems to struggle to keep temp below 60deg F. (set at 37deg F), freezer had been around -1degF, now struggling to maintain 4deg F)
Service dept lady told me "the weather has been so humid". A cop-out to which I reply: This fridge worked flawlessly last summer when it was humid and also, all your fridges don't fail in humid weather, therefore this one has a flaw.
Confidence low.
We bought the French door GE Profile in 2006 and I am now waiting for a service technician for the THIRD time. The Freezer is at 33 degrees and the fridge is at 59 degrees. We have lost about $600 dollars in food over the three incidents.
We will be asking for a new unit (non GE) from the appliance store we bought it from. The appliance store has been great so far.
To the person who said "buy American", I would love to. Tell me one that is built well and entirely in America. The US company BS is just that BS. I don't care to make an American CEO a multi-million dollar bonus while they put Americans out of work.
Purchased a GE Profile French door (Ice and water thru the door) Model#PFSF6PKWBB refrigerator in Feb. 08 from Home Depot. Our old GE Frig was also 25 cubic ft but it seems that it had much more interior space??? I am very unhappy with the thru the door icemaker it produces very little ice on a daily basis and we have run our several times when we have guests. Would be interested in hearing other opinions of this frig especially the icemaker. For $2300.uou would think it would at least make enough ice. Not impressed with GE!
Purchased GE Profile French Door PFSS6PKXSS in June from Lowes.
Delivered and returned the same day. The tech's couldn't get the water dispenser to stop leaking. They blamed air in the water line as it was going in my brand new house. 2 Gallons of water drained a cup at a time and no change. I said no thanks not interested take it back.
Lastly, when they tell you the wheels won't scratch your hardwood floors; they are wrong. Marks all the way down to the wood.
We purchased the GE Profile French door stainless refrigerator/freezer November 2007. Today is October 12, 2008, we are on our original ice maker plus 2 replacements, and now have the same problem. Noisy, grinding, popping, then no ice. So noisy at night that it wakes us up. We are getting ready to call service, I suppose, for the 4th ice maker. Thats a hell of a lot of money to play for such a shoddy piece of work. I have never been so disappointed in an appliance as this one. Food spoils faster in this refrigerator.
I've had so much trouble with my stainless steel side by side GE Profile I started looking on the internet to see if surely there is a recall on this product. Money certainly is an issue on this product for it was quite pricey. I will from now on check out complaints before I ever purchase such an expensive product. Thank you so much for not being fearful of complaining. The main issue is the LCD icemaker. It's blinking now and nothing works. The filter blew off so forcefully in my hand I thought it was going to blow it off from the pressure. I've had the LCD replaced, the filter replaced, and it still doesnt work. I am afraid of this product and don't know how to turn off the water line, I'm afraid it's going to blow up again.
Thanks for listening.
I have had my doors replaced (3) times in the past year. GE says it's a cosmetic issue and will not do anything further. They know the have a problem, but feel it's not their concern. I spent $6000 on new kitchen appliances and this is what I get!
We bought all ge profile appliances. Our dishwasher would leave about half of the detergent in the compartment. Repairman said we need to use liquid detergent, we told him it doesn't say that in the instructions. Next our stove's digital display just disappeared. The stove was like you had unplugged it. Repairman had to spend about half a day tracing wires inside the unit and finally found a short. Our refrigerator runs constantly and is quite noisy, repairman says they are supposed to run 85% of the time, why doesn't it say that in the instructions. I think that is ridiculous considering how noisy it is. The handle on the freezer door is coming loose now. Guess I will fix that. If you have wood floors be careful pulling the refrigerator out to clean under it, the wheels made indentions in the floor everywhere we moved it. We have had ge appliances ever since we have been married over 40 years now. When we buy new ones, you can bet they won't be ge again.
I have GE Profile, bottom freezer with dual fridge doors. It's about 6 months old now. While it's performance has been good and I like the overall functional design, the compressor has started to make a shrill noise when operating. It's extremely annoying. It can be heard anywhere when you're down stairs. The repairman inspected it and said it's normal. So why has it only been doing it for a month?
Purchased a GE Profile French door refrigerator Sept. 08 and the icemaker has made very loud noises since day 1. Actually wakes us up at night. The very first night we thought there was a burglar in the house and I almost went for a weapon. Overnight guests are startled as well. Second problem, the ice maker runs out of ice easily. Service came out 2 times and 5 phone conversations with various reps at the factory ended in "the ice maker is working normally, there is nothing we can do". Very frustrating. It appears to be a design problem that they say has not been reported by anyone else (so live with it). Not the case after reading through the threads on this site!
The icemaker makes too much ice which flies all over the kitchen when we open the ice drawer. After 3 service calls, a repairman finally admitted it is a design flaw and the engineers are working on fixing it. In the meantime GE expects us to live with ice flying all over the floor. It should be recalled.
We purchased the $2,500 GE Profile PFSS6PKWSS in November of 2007...What a piece of garbage! The ice maker/mother board has already been replaced twice and as many have also said, the serviceman states there is a big problem with this item. I must have gotten lucky....the serviceman said I got the new and improved mother board! We will seen in six months!
The quality of the Stainless Steel is horrible, all we that have to do is look at the fridge and it dents. GE would not replace the doors stating it is a cosmetic issue even though delivered to my home in this condition. We just sold our home and NOT taking the GE appliance with us, I would be embarrassed to put it in our new home. I will never buy anything made by GE again.
I just purchase a new Jenn-Air, 100 times the quality for the same price!
We have a GE Profile stainless steel side-by-side door fridge and the number of problems we've had with this fridge is simply remarkable. Even right now, when "working as designed" the freezer temp varies by roughly 15 degrees, depending on the outside temperature, making it a coin toss as to whether ice cream is rock hard or liquid. I couldn't imagine ever buying another GE fridge.
I am waiting for the GE repairman for the 4th time in 5 months. We have just lost our SECOND full freezer of food. The first time was when our NEW $2300 Profile SS French Door model was less than 60 days old. It took 3 visits to fix the problem. I was reassured by the 2 repairman that spent hours soldering or welding on my new kitchen floor that it was now better than new? We had just bought a new home outfitted with all GE Profile appliances. It seemed logical to complete the kitchen with the Profile refrigerator. We spent 2 weeks with NO freezer while they continued to try to find the right parts. Yesterday we found the entire freezer contents melted, the ice maker dripping water. This model has lots of bling but give me the old $300 garage frig to maintain a food supply at my home.
May 2007 I purchased all new appliances for my new home. We decided to go with the GE profile line because we liked the way they looked. (I know) Anyway about 1 year three months later our freezer in our refrigerator model number PSS26PSTB started defrosting just enough for most of our ice to melt and form icicles all down the back of our freezer when it finally started to get cold again. My solution; remove the ice maker and turn it off. (we needed the space anyway)
Well about a month ago I was going to bed but went to grab an ice cream cone but when I opened the freezer, everything was thawed out. i looked at the digital readouts for both the refrigerator and the freezer, and both were getting warmer. i removed everything and placed it in our garage where we have 20 year old appliances that work.
I woke up the next morning and looked at the temp. 70/60
My two year old $2400 refrigerator was completely down.
i called GE only to be told that it was no longer under warranty, so I called a local guy who took one look at it and told me to get my owner's manual. I ran upstairs and got it, turned to the warranty section and to my surprise, I found out that the "closed" part (meaning the compressor and condenser) was covered by a 5 year warranty. I called GE back again and asked that they come out and take a look. they did and discovered that the compressor was bad. Not just the compressor but the Run capacitor, the overload switch, and the processor board assy. were all taken out by the bad compressor. He ordered all of the parts and set an appointment for May 13th. I took that day off but no one showed up. I called the service line and was told that the service technician had made an attempt to come to my house, but no one was there so he tagged my door and left.
That was quite impossible seeing as though I was in my garage most of the day with the door opened all day, and there was no tag on my door. The rescheduled for the next day so I took another day off. on that day they did arrive. The technician replaced the compressor, the run cap. the overload switch and the processor board. He turned it on and it started to get cooler. I thanked him and he left. Later that night I noticed that the temp. had leveled off at 60 degrees and was starting to rise. by nite time the refrigerator was dead again. I called GE again, and they send out another tech. forcing my to take off another day from work. he arrived, took a look at the refrigerate and said "it's got to be the condenser coils"
I think he's full of crap, but I let him order them anyway and He set up another appointment for the 27th. On the 27th I called in again for a personal day. 4pm came and still no technician. I called the service line and they had no idea why he didn't show, but they could reschedule for the next day. I reluctantly agreed, only because we desperately need our refrigerator.
that was this morning. I called first thing only to be told that the technician would not be coming because the parts that were ordered a week and a half ago had never left the warehouse. as a matter of fact, some of the parts had gone back order, but they failed to tell me this. I am so pissed that I just might roll that thing into the street and let the whoever wants it have it.
Please let me know if there is a class action suit against GE for these refrigerators. I too have had a nightmare of a time with this company. The dents on the door were evident when the service people from Home Depot pushed it into place. Home Depot - immediately replaced it, but the next one had dents as well - they plug it in an left. We lost all of the food overnight because it never worked ( the lights were on and we didn't know that it wasn't cooling.) Yes, another one was brought out - and this one is a problem too - very loud and we are on our third icemaker - it freezes up, give us whatever kind of ice it wants too no matter what the controls say. I spoke to a representative about the humming and she stated that they had the same problem with the one in their break room - the technicians told her that they knew they had a problem with the fan icing up and making a noise. Tell that to my family who just spent a small fortune on a kitchen why it isn't a gathering place anymore because of the noise. Thanks GE for the 6 additional months of extended warranty. What a joke. Please post any info on a recall ASAP. - I too won't be buying GE again.
Our new GE Profile Refrigerator, delivered 5 months ago, was making a hideous roaring, throbbing noise one evening when my husband got home and temps inside were 46/66 & rising. A call to the Appliance Service Dep't. in Tulsa resulted in the knowledge that our compressor had gone out and a new one would be ordered. Service guy said that compressors for that fridge were being smaller & cheaper (supposedly more energy conserving) and would break down during power surges.
I'm not enthused about a new compressor that will go out again, after the warranty is out, during a power surge, of which there are many due to Oklahoma weather. Shouldn't GE take the fridge back & refund our money?
Do not buy anything GE..we have a fridge GE Profile fridge up/freezer down ..my dream fridge I thought!!! 15 months old the temps are out of wack and not holding.
We ordered a new board ..we are now monkey in the middle waiting for a ticket # so this can be reapired at no cost to us!!!!
As of today fridge sitting at 40 and freezer at 22.What good is that?? Absolute rubbish!!
Model # PDS20SBSBLSS
All BS!!
Bought the french door stainless profile fridge in March. A few weeks after having it, it started making loud popping noises throughout the day and night. Sometimes pop once, other times several times in a row. Three technician visits later and no luck repairing it, GE replaced the unit at my request in August. Now just a month into the new fridge, same model, loud popping noises again. Not the icemaker, we turn it off and empty the drawer. Not the water line, turned that off and drained it also. Still same noise. Its LOUD! Love the way it looks, but GE's designers got it wrong. There is no way a popping noise this loud could be considered normal operation. It will wake you up several times a night. Its coming from the back center of the fridge upper part. The technicians look at it and cant figure it out. Save yourself the trouble and look at another brand. We only bought it because it matched the rest of our profile appliances which have performed great.
this is soo funny because sounds so common. we bought a brand new ge profile french door fridge. about 2nd night i heard a banging down stairs. thought someone was breaking into my house. go downstairs only to find that ice has wedged itself between icemaker and freezer wall. ever since we've had it. it makes too much ice or none at all. we can go weeks without ice. then all of a sudden they'll be ice. not to mention that when full it will fill about 4 normal glasses of ice. then its out again.
Same as above - GE Profile bottom freezer with french doors for fridge - 18 months later the FREEZER BROKE! How can that be??? For $3,000 the damn thing broke, no longer buying GE.
Same old story with our $ 2300 GE Profile purchased in March of 2008. Loud annoying popping noise, icemaker...when it works...fills only a couple of glasses with ice before running out, and...seems to take FOREVER to come out of the door bin. Icemaker stopped working once and had repairman tell us to take the icemaker tray out once a day to dislodge any ice frozen between the tray and side. Icemaker seems to stop making ice for a couple of days, then unpredictably starts producing cubes again. So disappointed to pay for a high quality appliance and get less performance than any previous GE appliance owned, including a 1949 GE refrigerator that still works beautifully in our family's vacation cabin.
Approx. a year ago, we upgraded all of our kitchen appliances with GE appliances. What a MISTAKE!! We have had nothing but problems with our dishwasher and with our refrigerator (PGSS5PJX). The icemaker works intermittently and based upon our experience with the dishwasher, it's something that my wife and I will have to live with...
My advice...never buy GE appliance products. It's simply not worth the trouble.
After reading the above comments, looks like i got lucky. i've had my GE Profile, frenchdoor/bottom freezer for just over 3 yrs and the motherboard went out!!! Had it replaced at 'no cost' but still had to pay $100.00 for the service call! Shouldn't that have been covered also since it's such a widespread problem. I agree, a class action suit should be filed considering how worthless these products are...and to think..I bought all three GE Profile appliances: cooktop, dishwasher, and fridge!!! Hope nothing else goes out!
HMMMM...GE Profile Refrigerator - burnt mother board almost burnt our house down. Ice maker broken. Clicking sound coming from relay.Repairman just left... Now they are going to call me and offer me some credit towards the purchase of another GE refrigerator. Do they really think that is a resolution. Ive read every one of these posts and it only solidifies my decision to never again purchase a GE appliance.
Oh, and that sorry excuse for a customer service 1 800 number.. The insincere, "Im sorry you had to experience that" give me a break.
The VP of Customer Service should be fired because they suck at customer service.
We purchased a GE side-by-side fridge with water and ice dispenser in 2006 June during our kitchen remodel. The fridge started to act up 2009 summer. Ice melts in tray and drips down and re-freeze. Freezer not cold enough. We never bought an extended warranty because our 14 year old GE fridge is still working in our garage. I ordered a control circuit board and replaced it myself. The fridge is working normally again. I hope it will last for more than 3 years. I will never buy GE again.
We have a GE Profile refrigerator (48" built-in) purchased June 2006, making it 3 1/2 yrs. old. From the very beginning it has always dripped water onto the floor... I continuously had GE technicians come to fix it. They claim to fix it but then it reoccurred again and again for the next 3 yrs. Last year, I found mold and water damage to my cabinet next to the refrigerator. GE service said that the refrigerator was made by Samsung and it was not their responsibility to fix the damaged cabinet. I do have a 5 yr. GE service protection plan, which is proving to be totally worthless.
I paid several thousand $$$ to cover all of my brand new appliances purchased in 2006 for my brand new home.
As of January 2010, 2 technicians came again to check the leakage on my floor... this time (with my insistance) they pulled out the refrigerator & found that the refrigerator cabinet on the bottom right side was rusting away due to constant water accumulation in there. We also found severe mold and water damage to my wood cabinets on both sides of the refrigerator! The technicians filed a claim report to GE on Jan.16, 2010... telling GE that they could not fix this problem and that the refrigerator should be replaced.
As of today, I have called consumer service repeatedly with my claim number and am told that this is being reviewed. This is a nightmare and never again will I buy a GE product! By the way all the other appliances (Bosch & Thermador) that I bought has never given me any trouble. Any suggestions as to how I can get this resolved would be appreciated.
We too have a GE profile stainless steel topfridge/bottom freezer and a week ago our temps started going up on both the fridge was sitting at room temp and the freezer was 4 I believe. We called a repair man NOT from GE I'm assuming it was purchased in 06 We purchased our home 18 months ago and they left the appliances...after reading all these complaints I see why...Anyway he told us the motherboard was out so we replaced and here we sit 6 days later and our fridge is sitting at room temp again..We are getting a new motherboard...Hope that fixes it...Who knows? I know I will NEVER buy one EVER!
WEe have a GE Profile French Door Freezer on Bottom purchased 12/05 many problems. Talked to customer service, but got no where. I called Kelly Johnson 502-452-4205 Program Mgr Consumer Relations, if you have issues call her. Also, I wrote a letter to Jeff Immelt, GE Chairman & CEO to complain, his address: 3135 Easton Turnpike Fairfield, CT 06828. Write him a letter & let him know your complaint. The more we write & call the more we will see results.
Unbelievable, model PFSS6PKXASS (stainless steel French door) ice maker never really worked well and finally quit after 14 months. GE has a terrible product and will not acknowledge the problem.
I've read all the posts on the GE Profile refrigerators. Sounds familiar. We've had a French Door Profile stainless, Model PFSS6PKWASS for a couple of years. Similar problems. Dents in door (even the third one delivered from Home Depot had a dent so I took a $200 credit).
The refrigerator is a piece of junk. The icemaker didn't make ice fast enough, woke us up at night with loud noises and jammed with ice all the time. So I finally turned off the ice maker and get ice from our old fridge in the basement.
The popping noises continue and are getting worse... these are in addition to the noise the ice maker made when it jammed. Today I finally just entirely removed the ice maker. The popping noises continue! I'm not even going to try to call GE repair.
I've figured out what to do about the problem. We are putting the house up for sale and including all the GE Profile appliances we bought with the house.
NO MORE GE PRODUCTS!
GE profile makes loud howling noise. Freezes our vegetables, can not hold temp to 37F.
Do not buy GE. If out of warranty, don't call GE, it is a waste of time and money.
Scrap it and buy some other brand.
Stay clear away from GE!
Do not purshase a GE product unless you have a back up fridge and a lot of vacation days to take off work. The first fride we bought was quickly replaced soon after purshase. The replacement has given us nothing but trouble. My fridge is at 59 degrees and my freezer at 12 degrees.Just called sears to send out repair man was told first they could get here is one week. They have been here 6 times in 3 months for the same problem. A friend of my has same problems with fridge and now her microwave. Buyer bewear!!!!!!!!!!!
The only benefit to the GE ice maker comes after:
1) you have gotten used to the banging, clacking and jolting cracks at all hours;
2) you have enjoyed enough dodge-and-weave from GE "customer service";
3) you notify overnight guests not to be alarmed when they hear something like a piece of lumber being slammed on the kitchen counter (no fooling);
4) you have had enough fun pulling chunks of cubes from the unit at 3am because the kids and dog are up and terrified from the sound of someone breaking into the house.
The banging, clacking and jolting cracks let you know that the door was held open for more than five seconds some time that day. This allows the Little Princess Rushed-To-Market ice maker to throw herself into "I-Am-A-Fifth-Rate-Design" mode, interfering with the harvesting mechanism, tray dump or some other double talk. This clever feature assures that GE owners will drive to the next state with a rental trailer, if that is needed to avoid being a sucker and buying another GE.
In my search for a solution, I have read enough posts all over the Internet to be able to sleep through the banging, clacking and jolting cracks, even if the kids cannot.
Read this and pity the sap who is stuck coordinating a kitchen load of GE appliances.
Note to GE owner / victims- am I exaggerating?

We own a GE Profile and the Ice machine is making a clicking noice and not making ice. This seems to be a problem with this Refrigerator. Does anyone know if GE is Warranting this problem? The refrigerator is only 1 1/2 years old. Sad!
