Like many New Englanders struggling with cost of heating oil, I'd like to hear from those who may have purchased one of the "new" space heaters being widely advertised (eg: "Amish" craftsman's "Heat Surge Miracle Heater"). Had hoped CU would do a report this past year but perhaps we'll have to rely on readers' input.
some good forums available, really handy to be able to get tips and advice before paying for call-out charges to get your appliance fixed when it could be something you could do yourself
I am trying to find the Danby DDR606 dehumidifier but it's no longer available. this is the CR Best Buy suggestion. does anyone have a suggestion of a comparable dehumidifier for 850sqft for a basement?
Like Julie....Would like to hear from anyone who has purchased a "Heat Surge Miracle Heater".Have already checked with BBB and they were not very encouraging. How do they perform? How is customer service....how about their return policy? any info would be appreciated
I am thinking about purchasing a Heat Surge insert for my fireplace...I see such mixed reviews I can't make up my mind...any help out there?

I just purchased the Amish Heat Surge electric heater. I hope it is what it claims to be. I hope I can return it if I am not satisfied. Do you have any more info as to the cost efficiency of this?
Read with interest Mike's purchase of the Amish Mantle and Miracle Heater (correct assumption?). My Mom (on fixed income) is interested but that is a big purchase for her. Please, please post your experience and Consumer Reports - any validation on this would be wonderful!
I have read about the Amish "Heat Surge" flameless heater. Does anyone have experience with it? With high cost of heating our house we were thinking of something portable to move with us but that does not increase our electric bill so much. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. Thanks Denise
we purchased a heater from the amish last winter & i would recommend this to anyone as a great purchase.Though our ceilings are 14 ft high we find that our reg heat(oil) we keep that on 63-64 and agin with the high celing the amish electric fireplace keeps room temp 68-73.the cost is NO noticable differnce in our electric bill. Also,it looks really nice as a piece of furniture as well.Good luck
I found some info on those Amish heaters at the following website:

Are you going to check out these new Amish Heat surge heaters to see if they really work. I get a subscription at home and have not seen anything on it yet.
My Aunt owns 2 of the Amish heaters, purchased them last winter 2007/2008. She claims that there was no significant difference in her electric bill and she heated solely with her 2 Amish heaters. We live in Northern Bay County in Michigan...pretty frigid winters.
I just ordered 2 last night. I'm hoping they're everything that she says they are. We heat our home with an "All masonry" furnace. We have a fuel oil furnace for back-up.
Since our home (old farm house) isn't insulated well and there isn't always someone home to build fires in the middle of the day the furnace kicks on alot....I know this because we go through more fuel oil than we should.
My Aunt believes I will not use ANY fuel oil this winter if i use the Amish heaters. That will be wonderful since fuel oil is $4.00 a gallon and we typically go through 300 gallons or more in a season.
I will give an update in a month when I can speak from my own experience.
I am interested in buying an electric fire place. What is the difference between the Amish heater a space heater and the Amish heaters? Can anyone help.
Thanks
I am looking at purchasing a used Washer and dryer set. I am looking at a Maytag Atlantis set, about 4 years old. Has anyone owned or used this set and how would you rate it. Thanks Sing Sing
Heat Surge space heaters are running a number of TV adds. Is the product worth the price or can you do as well with a department store over the counter purchase of like product?
Heat Surge is a LLC.
Thanks
As long as we're on the subject of Amish heaters, how about electric fireplaces as well. Many can be found at websites like Lowe's.
We have a small fireplace, one of the cast iron ones. It heats well but costs us 3.00 a day to run. Not a deal in my mind. It is nice to warm the basement if the kids are having friends over and looks great as well. I do not think there is a quick fix for heating. The Amish heaters use 8 cents an hour, which adds up to approximately 2.00/day. There is no way that they will not add to your heating bill. Heat costs. Wish there was a better answer... especially since I got my natural gas bill and it is up on the budget plan again.....
I purchased a Heat Surge - Amish , oh really? - electric fire place in 2007 . The heat from it is minimal though enough to take the chill out of the air for one 11.5 x 21 ft room . My ceiling is insulated . I live in South Arkansas where winter is mild . The heater is a beautiful piece of furniture . It comes with a 1 yr warranty ; I bought an additional 2 yrs for $28.00 . There is a Customer Service number 1-800-924-7964 but I have not called it . I went to the webb site posted by Randy 10-19-08 , the site was not available . If I had it to do over again I would do thorough comparisons before purchasing this heater . Amish folks are known for integrity so I question the reality of the photos in the ad if this is bogus .
I just went to the Web site Randy posted and it worked just fine. A huge posting of comments about the Heat Surge and the Amish mantel.
The heck with electric, oil or gas heat! We use to heat with a heat pump and a wood stove. The front of the house was roasting due to the wood stove and the rest of the house was cold. And the heat pump is a joke with high electric bills. Last winter we purchased a Hardy Wood Burner to heat the house, hot water and our 30 x 50 shop. We use about 10% more wood than we did in the wood stove, but now every room in my house is 73%. We can run the dishwasher and 2 showers at the same time and have more than enough hot water. Now it does help that I have 10 acres of woods, so getting wood is not a problem or cost.
My parents purchased the Heat Surge (Amish Fireplace) for a room in their home that started to feel a bit chilly to them in their older years (corner room addition). At first, I questioned their purchase; my Dad is a contractor and I thought he should know better. Anyway, we spent a weekend with them and we were impressed. We bought one, as did my brother and another friend. We bought it from Heat Surge, but as a "scratch and dent" at $250; When it arrived, I could see no flaws. Same with my Dad and brothers' form of purchase.
I called with a few questions (did not come with a manual) and the customer support was friendly and efficient.
Anyway, after using it for a while, we really are enjoying it. We have a family room in the back of the house that was always the coldest room - again an addition (with siding) attached to an older brick home. Now we are enjoying sitting there enjoying the warmth - first time in the winter we've been able to do so since we moved in here many years ago. I've read a lot of the negative reviews lately, but they don't apply to our situation. It warms the room, did not run up the electric bill, and although I thought the "fireplace" part would be a bit "hokey" (we have real fireplaces in our house - but seldom use them because of the mess and draft), it is actually a pleasant visual. Could not be happier with this purchase. Just our opinion, but wanted to put it out there for anyone intersted.
P.S. I really don't care if the Amish actually make it as some seem to be taking offense with. It's simply a good and realiable product - that's all that matters to me.
Thinking of getting one of the Amish mantle heat surge electric fireplaces. Just want to if the people speaking highly of them are legitimate and not shills for the manufacturer? Does CR verify that the posters are real and not "plants?"

Recently I brought a new water appliance. That is saving me lot of money that I would have spent on bottled water. It creates very pure drinking water from atmospheric air...No plumbing is required. It serves me both hot and cold as I wish... Am so happy that my guests and neighbors are coming to taste it...it is so tasty.

I just ordered a Heat Surge (Amish oak mantle) a few days ago. My electric bill ws $293 this past month. Usually it is $60. I will let this a website know after I use it.
I live in cold Northern California. I am happy to hear of the positive results of people who purchased and used this heater.

We purchased a heat surge heater in Jan 07 it did do the job in heating the room but did cost me more in electric. My cost jump big. Then went to use it this year and it didn't work. They did replace it, but wouldn't allow me to purchase an extended warranty. I would recomment EdenPure comes with a 3 year warranty and will ship free. I have one of these in my basement. Won't purchase another heat surge, not sure if the one I have will work more than one winter.
The Amish Mantle is a scam!
It is a simple elctric resistance heater with a squirrel-cage blower. Electric resistance heat is the most expensive and least environmentally friendly way to heat your house.
If you need to heat only one room, look at the article in Consumer Reports and buy on that doesn't cost much - they are equal in efficiency. One kilowatt hour delivers 3,413 BTUs of heat - period!
All these years, and Consumer reports has never yet reviewed small washing machines for apartments. Those in the $100 - $250 range.
News for CR: Not all in US live the so called American Dream in a 4,000 sq ft house. If you do, wake up...
Everyone buying one of the "Heat Surge" heaters is wasting your money subscribing to Consumer Reports. It apparently is not doing you any good in making good decisions when purchasing appliances. There is no "miracle" involved with it. The only miracle is people delude themselves into thinking they made a good purchase because they wasted so much money on an over-priced, over-hyped space heater. Also, many of the positive reviews are simply planted by the manufacturer to further coax the unwitting into wasting their money on a product that is no better than a $60 one at Wal-Mart.
I BELIEVE YOUR BEST OPTION WOULD BE TO CALL OR CONTACT MANUFACTURER. OR EOECTRICIAN IN THE AREA WHERE HEATER IS. MAY BE A PROBLEM IF "HANDYMAN" FOOLED WITH ANYTHING, NOT BEING A REGISTERED TECH TO THE MANUFACTURER. PEOPLE OFTEN DO NOT THINK OF THINGS LIKE THIS AND VOID ANY 90 DAY OR 12 MONTH WARRENTY. I CAN'T BELIEVE IF IT WAS A HEAT SURGE FIRE PLACE OR EDENPURE HEATER THAT IT WOULD HAVE BLOWN A FUSE UNLESS THEY ALREADY PUT IT ON AN OVERLOADED ONE. JUST THE SAME DO THE SMARTIST THING, YOU ORDERED IT, GO TO SITE AND GET INFORMATION ABOUT PROBLEMS, KEEP CALLING MANUFACTURER AND ASK TO SPEAK TO CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGER. GOOD LUCK, HAVE KNOWN SEVERAL PEOPLE HERE IN SOUTH DAKOTA THAT HAVE BOTH AND THEY ARE VERY HAPPY WITH PRODUCTS AND COST OF OPERATION. WE ARE GETTING THE FIREPLACE.
I have just ordered one of the "heat surges" based purely on the experiences of two elderly couples (one of which is my parents). They all LOVE their heaters, and my mom is someone who always feels cold, no matter what the weather. I'll have to see what happens, but I feel much more assured in purchasing one, now that I see they have just earned the Good Housekeeping Seal.
I recently subscribed to Consumer Reports with the hope of getting brand name heat pump comparisons from the experts, but I can't seem to find anything. Can you tell me where I can locate this information on your website? We are presently trying to make a decison about replacing both our heat pump units. Thank you.
