Forum Friday: Top forums in recent weeks
December 19, 2008 12:01 AM

Washing machines: This has been the most popular appliances forum recently, with the least-repair-prone front-loading washer and LG washer smell among the hottest discussions. These topics have emerged as our other top forums.

Vacuums: Vacuum aficionados have been posting in our best vacuums topic, while picks and pans of deep and steam cleaners have drawn numerous reviews.

Refrigerators: A newer French-door refrigerator discussion has sprung up to replace the old discussion on the same topic, along with a call for the quietest refrigerator.

Mattresses: The hottest non-appliance forum has many folks chatting about latex mattresses. And thanks to the member who posted the last word on how to buy a mattress.

Dishwashers: The I love my dishwasher discussion continues with passionate posts. Can top one member’s tale of her 24-year-old dishwasher?

Central heat/air conditioning: Cold weather and energy prices probably stoked discussions, like Which gas furnace should I buy?, which ranks as our most viewed discussion. We're looking forward to responses to a member's call for opinions on integrated heating and hot-water systems.

Ranges: These kitchen appliances have seen more activity as the holiday-cooking season kicked off and Consumer Reports published new ratings. The pros and cons of induction cooking is especially useful.

Small appliances: Coffeemakers dominate here. As detailed in a recent Forum Friday, numerous threads are percolating away in the wake of our latest review of coffeemakers.

Dryers: You’ll find numerous discussions of particular brands and some interesting exchanges on ventless condensation dryers and ways to prevent clothes and sheets from “balling.”

While it didn't crack the Top 10 in traffic, the energy saving in your home forum has had some wonderful insights to put more green in your holidays.

GARAGE DOOR OPENERS, HAVE YOU ANY TEST DATA

I am also looking for Garage Door Opener information.
Belt or chain driven? Which is more reliable. Belt is quite, but will it last?

I was looking for garage door opener data. HELP!

Looking for garage door opener data, have you tested any???

I too would like to see tests of garage door openers.

I'm planning to replace my garage door (single car garage) and am looking at the Amarr brand name which is sold through Costco. Do you have information on this brand name?

I am looking for information on the comparisons on garage door openers

I would like to see ratings on garage door openers. Although for me it will be too late mine broke today and I need a new one immediately.

I am experiencing intermittent difficulties with my 15 yr old garage door opener and would like CR to do some testing to help me make a decision when the time comes.

From looking at the "last time tested" page, it looks like the last time Consumer Reports reviewed garage door openers was in January 2002 - however, the page may be a little out of date. It would be nice if that data could be made available via the website (I can't seem to find it with the search function.) Even better, it would be nice to see a more recent review done. I'm beginning to notice that Consumer Reports tests certain items over and over again, leaving some of the more obscure items untested for long periods of time. I think I would be all set if I were buying a TV set every 6 months, but what about garage door openers, etc.

I'm looking at replacing an old Stanley G/O with either a Chamberlain or a Chamberlain Liftmaster. Are there real differences? When will you test these?

I agree with Anthony. Tests on a wide variety of product categories would be fantastic.

I am looking for garage door opener info, as well. Neighbors have told me Chamberlain is the "builders' choice," but I was hoping CR would be able to confirm/deny this as being a best buy. Please help!!

I also came on-line to see about garage door openers as my 15 year old Sears Craftsman main gear is all chewed up and is now not working.

I was hoping to find data on buying a new garage door opener since my ten-year old liftmaster main drive gear stripped out but I'm unable to locate any data from any year for any product.
You cover the security concerns about having a rolling door code key to open and close the door but no product review of the actual door openers themselves.
Although, not having this data right now is going to have me guessing at which door opener to purchase I was hoping that in the future you would be able to help others who use this service by providing this information.
You let me down CR. I have always counted on you to provide up to date information on every product because that is how I shop for big and small ticket items.

Yes why no garage door opener data??

How come you do not have any data on Garage Door Openers? I was wondering what the difference is between chain driven and screw driven models and what models are the best overall performers.

I NEED TEST RESULTS OF GARAGE DOORS AND OPENERS-
IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT TELL ME HOW TO GET THE INFO
IF NOT---WHY NOT---

I am disappointed Consumer Reports does not have any tests on garage door openers. Mine crapped out last week, and I have been researching them this week, and cannot find anyone who has posted any reliable reviews of openers online. This is why I subscribe to Consumer Reports - for tests of products, not so I can read articles about financial data or whose low fat ice cream tastes the most like the high-fat stuff. I can buy 10 different quarts of ice cream and figure that out for myself.

I too am disappointed there is no data on Garage Door Openers. I trust CR to help me in areas where I feel claims outweigh the facts. I want to self-install this time since I no longer trust the units I have dealt with up to now. For now, I will open and close by hand, hoping the data is forthcoming.

I'm in the same boat as Kim, and disappointed like all the others that you not done any testing in years. Why not?

CR--I could always count on you to have the information I needed when I was in the market to purchase something...BUT...you have really dropped the ball on this. Why do you not have reviews on garage door openers. Very disappointed in your service today!

I too need info on garage door openers. It would help if it included info on the doors themselves and the installation services.

Guess I'm out of luck as are all the other folks here. I too am in need of a new garage door opener & need info now. So what's the deal?? I was waiting to research your site before making my purchase--only to find a blog of others disappointed not being able to locate this info.

Key disappointment that you do not cover. I will not renew until you listen to your subscribers.

My sister has a side mount garage door opener and I was hoping to get some comparison information before I purchased one. My garage door opener is in the middle and seems to be on the way out. I know its a liftmaster and it sounds really smooth and has a built in locking system. She said it was expensive and I'd like to know if it's worth the investment. When do you plan to review garage door openers?

Just renewed my subscription so I could look up garage door openers. Add me to this list of people dissatisfied with your service.

Just renewed my subscription so I could look up garage door openers. Add me to this list of people dissatisfied with your service

I would also encourage CR to perform and report testing on garage door openers

Does anyone have a recommendation for a garage door opener?

I just bought a house with two garage doors. I'm going with Liftmaster 3820 models for both single and double doors. 1/2 hp is enough and the belt drive is very quiet. Too bad CR doesn't have anything to gage this by.

Cannot believe this is not available to review.
I too will rethink my subscription

Long time subscriber also looking for info on garage door openers. You tested "garage organizers" (recently) but not garage door openers?!

Lack of recent testing on garage door openers is a HUGE disappointment to me. That is one of the main reasons that I purchased my 1-year membership today. This is not good as I will now have to trust what is written on the box and hope for the best. If any of you have purchased one recently and would like to share any advice, positive or negative, please do! Thanks!

So the question is...are you planning on doing a report any time soon on garage door openers? It appears to be pretty obvious that several of your subscibers could have benefitted from an article on them.

Add me to the long list of CR subscribers looking for information about garage doors and openers. Does anyone at CR monitor this web site or respond to these requests?

Today I signed up with Consumer Reports to get some information about garage door openers. To my dismay, there was nothing. My Wayne-Dalton iDrive died (after 5 yrs.) and I want to replace it as soon as possible. In reading other on-line reviews, I won't purchase another Wayne-Dalton because (1) it has only a 1-month warranty and (2) it doesn't hold up well in colder climates. I'm hoping CR will expand their research, especially to those items that are not being replaced every 1-3 yrs. This is so disappointing!

A review would be way too late for me now. I have to buy one this week. Maybe in twenty years when I have to replace one again, CR will have a recommendation. Does any member have experience pro/con that he/she would be willing to share here? or info about online research that could help?

Wow. I have been a long time subscriber to Consumer Reports (going back to the 80s) but hadn't been on the web site since buying a new vacuum several months ago. Today, I went to get information on a traditional electric water heater. Nothing. So then I went to check on new garage door openers. Again nothing. What has happened to the premier independent testing organization? I really doubt that I will renew my subscription next month as GOOGLE provides more information for free.

Hey CR, get a clue! How many posts does there need to be for you to get it? I subscribe only to compare items that I am buying or need to buy (like a garage door opener). From the looks of it there are a lot of people that need the garage door info. I'll save my renewal fee with you and just go to a search engine from now on.

I am adding yet another voice to the request for garage door opener recommendations. I am disappointed to find that there is no recent data. Please do it soon, or at least tell us what is in the works. thanks,

Add my name to the list of people looking for garage door opener information.

I just donated money to CU and I continue to be happy to support you guys. I just need some information even if it's old information. Otherwise, I have nothing to go off of.

I too am sadly disappointed to see no info on garage doors nor openers. I subscribe for these items to be suggested. very disappointing.

I want to relaced an existing single 8' garage door opener. I don't know if it is worth paying extra for the belt driven vs the chain driven. I realize the belt driven is quieter but do they last longer. Can you help? Have you tested garage openers?
Thank you.

I too am looking for information on Garage Door Openers. Based on the comments, a lot of other people are looking as well.

Suggest you test garage door openers.

I can't believe that garage door openers haven't been reviewed recently. There are a lot of us who could use some advice on this product.

We are looking to put in at least one garage door opener in a newly built 3 stall garge...However, I can't find any recent info on openers...Will any new info be forthcoming????

Need information on garage door openers

I need info on garage door openers. Mine crapped out as well and I need info.....belt,chain,screw drives...which is better. Who makes the quietest?

By looking at your blog I see that I'm not the only one looking for test information on Garage Door Openers? Since these are common Safety/Security Devices. I'm suprised and disapointed you don't have any test data.

I am also looking for info on reliable brands of garage door openers. Help us CR!

Wow, looks like I'm not the only one wanting info on replacing an old garage door opener.
You have a captive audience!

I was searching for garage door opener reviews for my mother whose door opener finally stopped working and was disappointed to not find any information at all. Many of the above posts are correct...many items are reviewed several times but other items, such as garage door openers, have not been reviewed since 2002 and that information is not available online. Very disappointing.

I too am very disappointed that CR has no recent data on garage door openers. Mine, too, has failed and I wanted to compare results between belt driven and chain driven models. As others have noted, it appears that CR has been testing a lot of the same items constantly and needs to expand to other consumer items.

I need to replace all three of my garage door openers. What should I change to? Too bad there are no tests.

I too am confounded a to why this matter hasn't yet been addressed - several manufacturers with numerous models and types ... I was considering a Sears Craftsman GDO - but, belt-drive, screw-drive or chain-drive ... and how much Horse-Power (HP) ... 1/2, 3/4 ... I frequently purchase Craftsman products because Sears stands behind them pretty well ... it appears 'Chamberlin' is making their top-of-the-line belt-drive GDO with a battery back-up system. A GDO is something most families use multiple times a day ... nearly as important as a sink faucet, TV or a refrigerator! I have so many questions and CR has let me down by having no test data available ... this is why I buy the CR nag and susbscribe to the web-service! Is CR testing/reviewing Garage Door Openers (GDO) soon? ... if not, why not??? It appears there are many other folks out there in the same quandry as myself and the others who have already posted the same sentiment !?!?! Thank You for considering the important review. bh

Add me to the list of disgruntled subscribers that would like to see an evaluation done on a wide range of Grarage Door openers. I just can't believe that CR has neglected to provide its subscribers with a current evaluation.

Add one more disappointed subscriber rethinking his subscription.

What a waste of money. CR has not done the research on many items I have in question. I have tried to look up information on steam mops for hard wood floors and I have also tried looking up garage door openers. NOTHING! I can't believe I paid for this service!

I also came here to find data on garage door openers. How dissappointing that you don't rate any. This is one of the most used and important houshold appliances. You should have done tests long ago. Shame on you.

Ditto

Add me to the very long, and apparently growing, list of dissatisified subscribers searching for garage door opener ratings and information. This is an important subject to most home owners, yet I can see that for several months people have been seeking this information and none has been provided. I will no be renewing my subscription if there is not a satisfactory response to my and all the other requests for this information. It just makes me wonder what CR is up to!!

I can tell you what not to buy. I installed two of the i-drive models from Wayne Dalton. A great idea very poorly executed. The remote controls lose their memory every month or so, the switches aren't properly designed so you have to hold them down in a precise way for them to work. I've had the entire motor fall off one because the screws holding it in came loose. The cable has come off the drum twice on the other unit. I'm planning to install a traditional style closer this weekend rather than remount the cable again. A review would be nice.

R U kidding me? My Garage Door isn't working so I almost bought a Craftsman from Sears but the review on Sears website (clue: Sears HAS REVIEWS)but they were mixed at best so I came here and NADA. Come on CR, get your act together and review GD openers.

Just in case the last 100 posts didn't get the point accross...review some garage door openers! This is a major purchase for most homeowners for which there are many different brands/features. Seems taylor made for what CR is supposed to do.

Just putting our name down to this long list of folks looking for info. on garage door openers. I'm shocked that you didn't have this information available.

Yes editors- if you are looking for ideas on what to rate and test. I'd say you need to add garage door openers to you to-do list.

I, too, came to the site today to see what there might be on garage door openers. I know it's hard, if not impossible, to review everything frequently, but would prefer to see more of this kind of thing than reviews of foods, where everyone's taste is different and per-item cost is far less. I remember that when I replaced my opener 11 years ago, I did rely on reviews from CR.

Meantime, my impression is that any openers are essentially similar in overall quality, so it may depend on how much confidence you have in your installer.

Well, I join other commenters in their disappointment that garage door openers have not been reviewed/rated. Why is that?

i to am looking for garage door openers. cannot believe they are not here.

We are also disappointed that Garage Door Openers reviews are not available here on the web. I would expect that such an investment would have a higher long term value over some of the other items they review such as coffee makers. I'm in the market for two of them now and will be unable to make use of this subscription. I feel cheated somehow.

I am another one of your valued customers who was surprised that I couldn't find any test information on garage door openers. With a greater number of people remodeling their older homes instead of moving, the garage door opener is one item that needs updating for safety purposes. Older models do not have the electronic devices now mandated by law to prevent accidental crushing of pets, children, etc. We are looking for safety information as well as comparisons of chain vs. belt, horsepower, etc.

My garage door opener is kaput. I turn to the ever-revered Consumer Reports but there is nothing, zilch, nada, el zero. Why have you let us down on this major item?

The list of perplexed subscribers keeps growing. Our current door opener is 15 years old and sounds terrible. Please review GD openers soon!

I am also disappointed with CR having no information on garage door openers.

I find it odd that CR has not reviewed garage door openers. They are ubiquitous. I also find it odd that they don't respond to all these posts. I wonder if they monitor them. If not; why not?

I agree with everyone else. I always look up a product online with consumer reports be for I buy a product. But they have let me down. They have no current information on what garage doors and garage door openers are best. I consider this a major purchase and would like some info as I go about getting quotes. Which opener is best, chain or belt driven. Which garage door is the best for the buck, single, double or triple steel. This is the first time in like forever that Consumer Reports has let me down by not having any information at all available.

I just logged on to the CR site to research garage door openers and all I can find is this too-long list of people who are disappointed to find that there's no information available, even for paid subscribers!

Hey, CR, there's an obvious need here!

So why no garage door opener reviews? Are you just collecting fees or are you still reviewing things? I suppose that is a little unfair but I could use a whole lot less flash and a lot more product reviews. I find this web sit very confusing and difficult to locate things I am interested in. I have been subscribing to Consumer Reports since the early 70s and I can say that I used to be able to get my index and find reports on almost any item, Now I am more frequently disappointed than not. Judging by the other comments, it kind of seems like you are not paying much attention to your customers. Pitty. Once you take your eye off your customers and spend more time on fluff and less on useful issues you begin to look more like the NY Times than a useful resource.

I cannot believe that this many people have complained about the lack of garage door opener info without a single comment from CR. Aren't they the ones that rate customer satisfaction for other companies? I'm less upset about there not being any garage door opener info than I am about CR's blatant disregard for all of these queries. It says that all of these comments are reviewed by their moderators, so there's no way they can claim ignorance.

As for me, I won't be renewing my subscription.

CR, do you read these? I am also looking for info on garage door openers. Apparently, I'm one of many, but I see no response from you. Anyone? Anyone?

Ditto above on garage door openers. My Craftsman needs replacement. Was sure CR would have latest reviews. Very surprised to find there are no reviews online. Very disappointing. Where are you guys?

I am also looking for info on garage door openers

Is there any plan to evaluate garage door openers in the not too distant future?

I recall seeing reviews for Electric Garage door openers many years ago on consumer reports.
What happened? Who decided that it was more important to review Amish heaters and garage organizers? grrrrrr!

I too am looking for information on garage door openers. I'm not going to cancel my subscription because there isn't a review, but it sure surprised me. I am surprised about the lack of a reply from them on this issue though.

Here are some great sites for reviews. Unfortunately, there is little data on reliability. I will try to add some based on my experience with Chamberlain 1/2HP 7902K. It wore out after 5 years with a light weight, well balanced garage door.

http://www.consumersearch.com/garage-door-openers/reviews

I like most people was looking for info on garage door opens, suprised there is nothing...

Adding my voice to the chorus. Like a previous poster, I also tried to look up wood floor dry mop info as well as garage door opener reviews. Shocked really that no reviews exist for either.

Is this the correct forum for requesting that research be done? If not, what is?

Need to find a garage door opener. Don't have a blog if you aren't going to respond.

Add me to the above list--Garage Door Openers last reviewed in Jan. 02--I cleaned out my old stash of CR and only keep 2 years....now I have to make a trip to the library to see if they have the 2002 issue. Guess this won't help my carbon footprint. Shame on you! Why am I paying more for CR online? No help at all!

I imagine my comment will be lost among all the others, but I too am looking for a garage door opener. Mine died, I need a new one, and the first place I usually turn to has no information. I will seriously rethink resubscribing.

HELLO!!!! Is anybody listening? Review gararge door openers!!!
Does not take a rocket surgeon to figure this one out!!!

I am amazed and disappointed that CR has no information on Garage Door Openers. Please review them ASAP.

Does anyone know the best place to complain about the lack of reviews on "Garage Door Closers?" everyone here only complains about the lack of reviews on "Openers." Please help, I am an idiot!

We definitely need information on garage door openers. I want something that is reliable, safe and inexpensive. I heard Genie is the best, then Wayne Dalton and Sears last. Is this correct? Don't know since CR hasn't done a report on them.

Yes I too just renewed my subscription to CR to find out about garage door openers and you have NOTHING!! How can that be?? I am going to call and cancel.

Add one more subscriber to the disappointed list. I would like to be armed with CR ammunition when I go shopping next week for a new garage door. Too bad.

I also am annoyed you don't have garage door opener ratings!!! And you need to make the search functionality of this site better! For a company who charges this as a subscription service, it's not worth it unless you make it significantly better.

Hey CR, the above is the very definition of a "consumer report". The lack of response is inexcusable in my opinion. I'll be canceling my subscription. I'll check back in a couple of years in hopes of finding some new content.

I also need info on garage door openers. How many of us need to ask? Is there a magic number? I'm sure you realize these posts represent just the tip of the iceberg. Most people don't bother, but simply resort to other resources, such as ConsumerSearch.com.

What's the point of hosting this blog? Just to let us vent? Please assign someone to let us know your plans re openers!

P.S. My first time to post to a CR blog. In the form for posting comments, what do you want me to enter in the "URL" box?

Thanks! (I think)

Count me among the many who are looking for gargae door opener info... what's up with that?

I am also looking for information on Garage Door Openers. I am shocked that Consumer Reports does not have ratings on these. Very disappointed.

Am also looking for a review on garage door openers

Looks like i'm in the same boat. Garage door opener is on it's way out and I came to CR out of habit only to find........... nothing useful.

Need to replace my garage door opener now, too bad you don't have any info to direct me in the right direction. You need to be there for your consumers.

Looks like I'm the April 3 installment of "disappointed subscriber re: lack of garage door opener info." I'm sure the 2002 report that supposedly exists in print would have been helpful to me if it were online. Could CR staff please email it to me? Thanks!

I just bought a monthly membership today to check out garage door openers, and was also disappointed to find nothing on this topic.

Add me to the list of folks looking for advice on buying a garage door opener, only to be very disappointed. Come on CR... Listen up here!

My garage door opener died this morning4/7/2009. I had a lift master 1/3 hp and it worked fine for 10 years. I wish there was some information on garage Door openers. I decided to buy another Lift Master. this one with a belt which is quiet and with a stronger motor 3/4 hp. but it cost me some money. I would look at all the brands and see which one works for you and the price. CR did let me down this time but usually they have most everything.

With the cost of a new garage door and opener at or around $1000 or more to $2000; some help for consumers on making such an important purchase would be very helpful. Does anyone even know what a standard replacement should cost? What kind of motor do i need? There are more garage door choices than i thought, plus getting help on the right type of company to install would be helpful.

I agree -- my garage door opener quit, the model is no longer made, and I have no basis upon which to choose a new model. Time for a review!!!

Me, too! Garage door opener needed immediately and no advice. I'll have to rely on some earlier blogs and guess as to the best brand for the money.

My daughter just had a home built for herself. This is her 1st home and she plans for it to be her last home. We are her parents and want to install a garage opener for her as she is less than 5 foot tall and needs a reliable opener to operate this garage door. Please tell me how I can reach you to find out your thinking on these products. I am a long term customer who is as disappointed as the previous folks looking for this information.

Great openers of the garage door... where shall we turn for your review? CR has forsaken you...
Ahhhhhh!!!!!

I have to join the crowd...My 9 year old garage door opener took a dive. Need to replace it. Was hoping to find reviews in the on-line CR. Sorely disappointed. With 5 pages of comments all looking for garage door opener reviews, I do hope someone at CR is reading!!! Unfortunately, for myself and many others who have commented, it will be too little too late.

I came looking for information on garage door openers, along with the others, I am disappointed that there is nothing that I could find.Yes my garage opener has died.

Garage Door Opener info needed. I am purchasing an older home with a garage but no opener. I was expecting CR's usual fantastic reviews with CR Quick Pick data but it appears there is none. Any plans to review garage door openers in the near future?

I, too, am looking for garage door opener reviews!

We appreciate all the information you have provided for many years. When will tests be conducted for garage door openers? Unfortunately, I plan on purchasing one within the next week. Hope I select the right one!

I was hoping to find information about garage door openers.

Really need a review on garage door openers. When it breaks it needs to be repaired or replaced. Not an easy job. Can be expensive. Knowledge of what to replace it with is important.

I Agree!! My husband and I built a new home 3 years ago, the builder installed a Linear LD050 garage door opener to operate our insulated garage door. We paid a pretty penny for it, the unit is only 3 years old and we have had on going, issues with the remote not opening the door unless your abut 2 inches from it. Our neighbor has the same door opener and they can open their door from a block away... I would love to have access to information on which opener will work for us. At this point Id like to say my garage door opener has lasted 5 or more years but at this point I’m look to replace it for dependability!!

I too need to replace my garage door opener and came to CR for information. Very surprised no information on garage doors.

Wow. Oh well....guess I'll just have to go put on a blindfold. Yeah! Off to the Big Box stores!

I never make a major purchase without checking your ratings and it's surprising and mostly disappointing that you've never rated garage door openers. You seem to have a lot of subscribers and possibly now former subscribers who have been asking you for these ratings. Why won't you listen to them.

I am looking to buy a garage door opener. After looking through your site I have as much knowledge about them as when I started....None. It appears that there is a great deal of interest in them. Please test them so people in the future will have better luck finding info on them than I did.

ps-CR's last reports on openers: Garage-door openers, Jan 94, 20; Jan 02, 36]

And there are 5 pages of requests on the blog!!

Follow my previous post to suggest a review to CR.org. Apparently nobody reads or responds to the blog. Fine, but CR.org should note that this is for user discussion only, is not reviewed or responded to, and make it easy to request review of a product. They should be able to tabulate requests to decide what to review, poss. even showing the total requests so readers can see if there's a lot of demand, and if not, see why they don't review a particular product.

Good luck to all!

Mark

Add me to the list of disappointed people needing info on garage door openers. Mine had a mind of its own, started opening and closing by itself day and night. We unplugged it, but could use some advice on choosing a new one

Very disappointing. No info. on garage door openers.

I also am a subscriber looking for garage door opener data.

Ouch, I need to replace a garage door opener and as always, I go to the trusted CR site for reviews. Sigh, no garage door opener reviews. How is this possible?

Oh well, anything CR does now is too late for this disappointed subscriber. Please consider providing this information in the near future so others may benefit.

You seem to review flat screen tv sets 2 or 3 times a year.....i realize prices have been dropping but don't believe the technology is changing so rapidly that it justifies repetitive reviews. How about updating reviews on GARAGE DOOR OPENERS....nothing since 2002

Also, I haven't been invited to participate in a survey for 7 years....I have been a subsciber for 15 years and used to participate at least every second year.
In 2003 we purchased a new home and outfitted it with a lot of new things: 5 major appliances, rear wheel drive mower, natural gas bbq, central air, vaccuum cleaners, 2 garage door openers, water softener, 2 big screen tv's....also have 3 cars. We've had a lot of issues with the appliances and some of the cars and would have liked to submit feedback for inclusion in your information compilation....but we haven't been asked to participate since 2002

i would like to get some info on screw drive - garage door openers versus chain drive

Add me to the list. It is really amazing that so many (including me) subscribe to the magazine and the online service yet receive little value. You review cars in EVERY issue, yet I never see a review for motor oil, oil filters, or air filters. You review interior and exterior paints, vacuum cleaners, and appliances regularly, yet nary a garage door opener review.

It appears that you don't care to read this blog either.

Add me to the long list of subscribers looking for garage door recommendations.

I too am very disappointed that there is no testing information on garage door openers and no response from aCR to all of these requests.

Wow, I am shocked as well, no reviews on garage door openers! But for those asking about past experiences, I had the Genie 1/2 hp chain model for almost 9yrs, it just died on me. Also, we use the garage door as the main entrance to the house, so we used this opener many times per day. Dan

No thanks to CR for the assistance on garage door opener reviews. CR's last review in this category was over six years ago - rendering this information completely useless.

So, left to our own devices, here are some ALTERNATIVE SITES (yes CR, we're going elsewhere for our information) that provide a small amount of help:

http://www.consumersearch.com/garage-door-openers/review
http://products.howstuffworks.com/garage-door-openers-types.htm

Also, Amazon.com has product reviews, but you have to drill down to each product individually - no side by side comparisons.

Hope this helps a little....

I would like to second the request for reviews on garage door openers, as I too was surprised there has apparently not been one.

It seems like consumers have been asking for information on garage door openers for a very long time and we still don't have this available. I believe that consumer reports should listen to what the people are asking for, it's a shame that you have silly reports on other things that no one really wants to read about but nothing on something like a garage door opener.

Add us to the list. Glad to see my subscription goes to look at reviews that have nothing to do with what we need.

How does one make an informed decision regarding major purchases when usually-dependable CR provides no information and no recent reviews for the product(s) in question? I, too, am looking to replace an older-model garage door opener and have come up empty-handed in my search, despite subscriptions to both CR's magazine and its online service. Any suggestions for other reviewers? I pride myself in being an informed consumer and prefer dealing with retailers and contractors armed with the knowledge I need. Shame on you, Consumer Reports, for failing your subscribers and not having the courtesy of responding to those of us who have requested this product review. At the very least, someone could let us know when a review of this product is planned.

So, where do we look to see if and when you are going to review garage door openers?

I need a garage door opener. I'm shocked to find that CR.org hasn't done a review for years. Other sources have. You can look here for some help:
http://www.consumersearch.com/garage-door-openers/review

I too need info about garage door openers. Seems like this is something you should address with this many people needing direction.

My garage door opener just died and of course I went right to my trusty consumer reports to determine which to buy. Opps, hard to believe, no info. I am very disappointed.

Add me to the growing list of subscribers needing information on garage door openers.

I too...searched CR for garage door openers and garage door reviews...was dissapointed...sometimes I wonder why we subscribe!!

Add me to the list. I'm also looking for garage door opener reviews.....

We need a garage door opener, too. Can't believe there has been no response to this many requests, or at least an estimate of when a review might be. Our opener is dead. We need info.

We did finally purchase an opener it is a Chamberlain 3/4 hp chain driven and it is wonderful. They say Chamberlain is made by the same manufacture as Genie but costs less. It has wonderful features and works very well. We have the large 16' door so we needed the one with a little more horsepower and it handles the heavy door with ease. I would recommend this brand to anyone who is looking for quality at a resonable price.

I recently became a subscriber to this site. So far I have not received any information that I could use. Sub Zero 700 series or any information on garage doors. I've noticed a lot of unhappy costomers............. very sad

I am one of the growing numbers that need info on garage door openers. Ours has died and there is no information on openers.
Help!!!

I just paid to subscribe to Consumer Reports on line so I could get ratings for garage door openers. I would not have subscribed if I knew there were no ratings given.

Add me to the list...wanted to find info on garage door openers- NOTHING!! It's a disappointment.

I also would like to see tests of garage door openers. CR had some information a few months ago, but I can not find it now.

I am interesed in garage door openers as well. Of course, by the time you do the test now, I will be already purchased what I will be living with for the next 10+ years... Definitely disappointing for a long time subscriber.

OK how many do they need before they reply to us???
I too need info on garage door openers...or is this just a space for us to vent our frustrations for nothing. I mean we do pay our subscriptions, and if I had a business, I would listen to my customers.

Add me to the long list of surprised readers that there is not a recent review of garage door openers. CR get your act together!

I too am one of the unfortunate ones that needs a new garage door opener immediately and counted on advice/recommendations/information from CR - but there is none. Luckily I still had my January 2002 edition so I could read and learn something about manufacturers, etc - but I am disappointed that some items get reviewed over and over - but something major like that has not been touched for 7 years. Thank you to Allen for his internet sites. I plan to check those out and see what information I can get since I have no help from CR!

yet another to add to the garage door and opener list.

Enough with the stains and paints reviewed every year. I also want information on garage door openers. My research has led me down the path of belt drive 1/2 hp from Liftmaster. I would like to know about Sears. I would also like to know if this is a dyi job. Professional installs are very expensive.

Please inform me ASAP regarding Garage Door Opener reviews and ratings.

THanks,
RJ

Add me to the list. Even a just general article on what to look for both in garage door openers and the doors themselves. With very few exceptions, the slick brochures from the various door companies don't reveal specifics on the construction of their particular products. I'd like to know the gauge of the steel door skins, for instance, as well as whether the door has "green" insulation (i.e., doesn't out-gas), etc. Among major manufacturers, some have better reputations for quality than others; same goes for warranties... it would be nice to see that in one place.

Another unhappy user who can't find anything on garage door openers.

I'm another long term CR subscriber in need of a garage door opener. I'm amazed at how many comments have been posted dating back to last year and yet no response. CR magazine used to include a list of ongoing testing programs so that you at least had an idea if a product review was in the works. Perhaps they need to spend a little less time educating consumers on global warming and recycling and go back to testing products. My subscription is up in September.

Yup, my garage door opener died, and I'm astounded that CR doesn't cover such an important appliance.

Garage Door Openers! I paid for an online subscription today for the first time because I KNEW CR understands that a garage door opener is an important device that involves the safety & security of one's children & property. Right? Add me to this ignored list of consumers asking for Garage Door Openers. Notice the claim on this page that says "all comments are reviewed...?" I don't believe it. Otherwise they wouldn't allow the terms "dickwad" or "tittytwister" to appear. Time to review with the competition & lament my wasted subscription.

I just bought a home and need to purchase a garage door opener and get it installed next week. I'm sorry to see that there was no information or comparisons on openers. Guess I'll just have to "wing" it, and am disappointed not to have found openers in Consumer Reports.

Another subscriber looking for information on garage door openers...and another disappointed searcher.

Also,disappointed.

How can you post more timely advice on $30 toasters than you do on garage door openers??? Are you really keeping up with the data explosion on the web, or just counting our subscription dollars? Mine is up for renewal next month. Let's see do I really need to spend $26 and not get the information I need??

GARAGE DOOR OPENER INFO NEEDED!

Another CR subscriber in search of garage door opener information. I usually rely on CR for so much. Like many others, I think I will rethink my renewal since this is not the only major purchase that I have not been able to find a review on.

I am speechless that CR does not have any information on garage doors and openers, especially given how many comments are here. Very disappointing! Too bad I already completed my annual survey or I would have included it. CR-get on the ball!!

Garage Door Openers? no info? what is going on? garage door openers have been around forever.someone needs to be fired.

Glad to see you finally added carpet cleaners. How long now until you add garage door openers

Guys, add me to the list of longtime subscribers disappointed in the lack of garage door opener reviews. This is a major home appliance with potential safety issues. We do look to your organization for insight and advice. Please add this topic to your research.

My Chamberlain (Liftmaster) 1/2 hp garage door opener quit today. The motor humms but chain does not move. After reading trouble shooting guide, it appears that the gears may have gone bad. The unit is 12 years old. I have an insulated 2 car door and am wondering if the 1/2 hp is not big enough or may be its just reached it normal life. I'll either get parts for it or replace it with a 3/4 hp unit.

I agree that CR should cover a buyers guide for garage door openers.

Ditto - just joined CR for the sole purpose of reviewing garage door openers. I'm a little peeved.

I too am quite disappointed to find that CR researches the same old useless stuff every year, with the exception of Garage Doors. I moved into a house about 3 months ago and the motor on my opener died on me this week. I just went out and purchased a home warranty and let them pick one for me. They installed a Liftmaster today, but I really would have much preferred to research to see which was the better option to go with - Come on CR - start reading your blog and catch up to your customer's needs. I too am not renewing my subscription because I have enough guides on car buying and TV selections... Thanks for the memories!

Add me to the listed of surprised CR subscribers not to find any details on garage door openers.

I bought a house a year and a half ago. My garage door has already been repaired twice. Brand: Legacy. So much for this item. I need to replace this door for it will keep on giving me headaches but I have no clue which brand to purchase. Please include this item in your future analysis and recommendations.

Would like to see a report on the best garage door openers to buy.

I would also love to see more baby products tested (ex. car seats). Usually the ones that I want to find out more about are not available on your site.

Add me to the ever growing list of subscribers looking for reviews on garage door openers. Why not, since most people use their openers every single day?

I cannot believe that there is no information on CR about garage door openers. Mine is starting to give me problems and will need to be replaced here real soon. I subscribe to CR to find reliable unbiased information about everyday products. So why is there no information on garage door openers? It's a product that most individuals use several times per day - not only by adults but by children also! THis is a product that if not functioning correctly could injure if not kill a person. How many children are killed each year by a garage door that malfunctions or does not have the required safety features? CR really failed us this time by not performing / updating the testing and reporting it!

Why not garage door openers? I think enough people have asked for this review.

Add me to the list of people looking for a recommendation on a quality, well tested garage door opener. Many thanks though CR on all of your other helpful advice on a wide array of products over the years.

Add me to the list of disappointed subscribers.

I am also looking for a review on garage door openers!!

I called to get my Genie garage door opener repaired (it's almost 8 years old) and was told that many contractors won't work on Genies because the quality is so poor. I logged on to trusty Consumer Reports to get info on which brand to buy ... add me to the list of subscribers wanting garage door opener reviews.

I need to replace my garage door opener. Imagine no reviews on consumer reports. I seem to NOT to find more and more or should I say I am finding less and less on what I need here. There are a lot of current complaints here.

I too am looking for info on garage door openers. Why is such a common item not addressed? There appears to be quite a few subscribers needing this info.

Also dissapointed that there is no info on garage door openers! Just bought a house and knew I would need the advice of CR...maybe I could have saved some money and gone with google like others are planning to do.

This is my first time looking for garage door opener info and I'm shocked at the number of requests for testing, without any apparent response by CU. Does CU not bother reading these forums and if so why does it run them? This looks like lousy customer service both in failing to do the tests, and in failing to say anything in the forums. Really disappointing.

hi, i was wondering where can i watch or download full metal alchemist the 2nd episode 11 been searching for it... no of the links are working....

The first time I wrote to CR was last week when trying to find help with house gutters; nothing! I thought for sure that I could find something about garage doors and openers! Nothing! So in less than a week, I have been disappointed by CR when I needed their advice. My renewal subscription came today. Guess where it is...the trash. I can do better searching the web. I am afraid that CR has fallen on hard times. I don't think anyone at CR is reading the comments.

I gave up on the idea that CR cares about this topic. I researched & bought my first opener new Genie 1/2 HP screw drive on Craigslist for under $100 and it is great! It seems that there are only a few brands out there and they all have safety features for little ones & warranties. Sears has too many models to choose from. Just go for one. someday CR will read our comments & be embarrassed. Careful with installation; it is not as easy as it seems.

I too looking for garage door opener for my Mom.

Do you provide rating on garage door openers? I am in the market for one and not sure what get.

Evidently no one at CR reads this, bc there are still no opener review a year and a half after this thread started
>:(

I am purchasing a new home and I need to get a Garage Door Opener but there is nothing in Comsumer Report to help me. Not so happy about this. I guess I have to look elsewhere.

Ditto. My Genie garage door opener's motor casing cracked about 4 months after the 3 year warranty expired. The money cost & time cost of installing a new one is high. Someone please analyze garage door openers for reliability.

Another reader very disappointed in no garage door opener information. The one we had died. One contractor told us it was because it wasn't strong enough; another said that wasn't the problem. Prices vary wildly. This is exactly the type of information I want...and is the type of information that can not be gotten elsewhere.

There seem to be many inqiries re: garage door openers. I also checked for any information regarding openers to help in my purchasing decision, and was unhappy to find no information on your web site. Do you pay any attention to inquiries for information.?

I'm looking for info on garage door openers...why aren't they reviewed on ythe site? Seems like I'm far from the only one looking for this info...

I am also looking for garage door ratings. I am going to replace a garage door opener that is 30 years old and mechanically sound, but has electrical problems that can not be resolved by friends and a garage door company (waste of $90). I will probably purchase a Craftsman as the brand has been reliable for many years. JH

Add me to the list of disappointed subscribers.

Well this seems redundant BUT I have used CR for years and have found almost everything... But WHY haven't Garage Door Openers been tested? Seems like lots of people have them so the information would be very useful.

I have the same results on Pet Insurance yesterday and thought it was just a fluke....

Need to replace a water heater. Was quite disappointed there had been no comparisons or recommendation. I even read on oneof the pages the water heater is ranked high home purchases.

Wow! Another consumer here looking for advice on buying a garage door opener. Add me to the growing list who will not be renewing their subscriptions.

LOL somebody says they need a listing for openers and some other guy - a total of three weeks later - lambasts CR for not having posted a review. lol

I'd like to see the metal roll up garage doors rated while they're at it.

yeah, I need to replace my garage door opener; also not getting any help from CR. Guess I'll try elsewhere.

I really need a garage door opener NOW. I am very disappointed as I have depended on Consumer Reports for most of my buying for the past 20 years.

I would appreciate information on garage doors as well.

Add me to the list who are looking for garage door opener reviews.

Add another one to the list of disappointed CR customers. I was really hoping to find something that would help choose what type was most recommended. Guess I'm out of luck here at CR.

Searching for garage door opener reviews and all I get is this thread of complaints about how there are no garage door opener reviews. Add me to the complaint list.

I need to purchase a garage door opener also and it would be great to have CR reviews.

Add my name to the list of dissapointed subscribers who want reviews on garage door openers. If CR can review vacuum cleaners, it can certainly review garage door openers. Bah!

I agree. Need garage door reviews.

Just joined and like the numerous posters before me looking for information regarding garage door openers. What a major disappointment that CR has chosen to ignore one of the major household items for the safer, easier to report on dishwashers, microwaves and ranges. I will be asking for a refund.

I subscribed this morning solely to obtain ratings for overhead garage doors. Found absolutely nothing. What a disappointment!

I agree, there should be space for garage door openers

I subscribed to ConsumerReports today specifically to get info on garage doors and a garage door openers. Very dissapointed to find out there is no info on either of these major purchase items. It is estimated that there are over 50 million electric garage door and garage door openers in the USA. I am shocked that consumer reports does not cover such widely used items!

My wife and I are also looking for info on garage door openers. I'm disappointed.

Ditto on the garage door info. Every six months I can see what the best TV, can opener, or refrigerator; but not garage door openers. Four years ago I hoped CR would help me but they failed me again. I ended up rolling the dice on a Lowe's brand WAYNE DALTON opener. The first remote died after 2 weeks, and the other one died a month ago. Door still opens from the hard wired switch- WHICH IS LOCATED INSIDE THE GARAGE- little help on rainy days trying to get into the house. BOTTOM LINE: DO NOT BUY WAYNE DAlTON BRAND GARAGE DOOR OPENERS. I wonder if CR has a better costumer service rating than Wayne Dalton. I will wait and see. My continued paid membership depends on it.

I want to listen good music!

Uh, I my garage door remote just died today and the system is so old, I can't by a replacement remote that works with the old system I got so I need a new opener right now. I came up here to see what CR had about them and I see by all the comments they have nothing. I can't sit and wait until CR decides to do a review. Of all things not to review? What are they thinking up there????

I just signed up today for online consumers reports
mainly to research garage door openers and can't believe not one piece of info on it. Thousands of consumers use this item and your research is really lacking by not having updated info on this.

I just signed up for CR online yesterday and was excited about seeing their analysis on garage door openers. NOTHING?!!! Seems to be a hot topic, I hope someone at CR is monitoring and sees the value of a review.

I would also like some info on garage door openers (which is, by the way, how I landed in this blog). I'm writing now, however, to express my amazement at the number of people who are stark raving mad at CR for not having EVERYTHING they want. These people are acting like little children who aren't getting their way. They forget that CR does a fantastic and thorough job testing and reviewing thousands of products, and they just become fixated on that "so and so" item that hasn't been tested yet.

There are several things that I would like CR to review that haven't been reviewed yet, but I do understand that CR operates with a finite budget and with a finite number of people. I'm sure they are working hard to thoroughly review as much as they can - and in this case, garage door openers just haven't hit the top of the list, not yet.

It is also worthy to mention that, for those of you who say you subscribed just for "so and so" item, you can see if CR has reviewed that item BEFORE you subscribe.

Evidently there is a considerable group of us who would like to know about garage door openers. Perhaps this warrants some attention.

WOW - I am looking for a garage door opener, so I ordered this service so I could do a comparison, not even giving it a thought that there would not be a comparison!!

Hello CR they have been around for how many years and used by (my guess) the majority of consumers and your subscribers; what's up with that?

I am very disappointed CR does not have a review on garage door openers. Is there an explanation as to why?

I can understand CR not having reviewed something initially, but what I find much more upsetting than the lack of a review on garage door openers (which is what I need also) is that 10 pages of comments from their subscribers over the last year detailing this desire has not generated a review. CR I am more disappointed in your lack of customer concern than your lack of equipment review. I will most likely be canceling my subscription!!!

Kind of amazing how many people are interested in Garage Door Openers. Mine went on the fritz yesterday. Since I need one NOW, any action CR takes on this will be too late to help me, but I'd bet this will continue to be a hot item of interest.

I can't believe you do not have ratings on garage doors and garage door openers. Time you got working on them - but it will be too late for me.

I couldn't count on CU for air conditioning units. Now I find that it doesn't do garage door openers either. Well, well, well....

Another disappointed subscriber looking for info on garage door openers. I am even more disappointed in CR for not responding to all the posts over many months requesting this information. I would think better of CR if a staff member even acknowledged that this is an issue.

My wife wants a garage door opener for her birthday (pretty romantic, huh?). Is consumer reports afraid of these devices? Have they never conducted a review? I tried searching and came up with nothing. I also don't see a reply to the multitude crying out for guidance on these practical tools. I assume that when a "moderator" reviews a comment for appropriateness, they may also consider making a statement, like "Garage door opener technology is evolving so rapidly that the new toll tag versions are coming this fall. That's right, put the tag on your vehicle and as you come up the drive you are scanned just like on toll roads and your garage opens without a push of the button. So we're waiting for that, and the retina scanners. Also, one of our testers drove up the driveway like he was on the tollroad, and blasted through the garage door before it had time to open, thus further delaying our tests. We appreciate your patience and keen interest, stay tuned". That would be better than silence. Now I'm on my own!

hadn't expected such a barrage of requests for garage door opener ratings, but here we are in july and still looking. thanks to those of you who posted the other reviews. we are also leaning towards the chamberlain 3/4hp (double door) after our genie (which came with the house that was built 25 years ago) packed it in this summer.

Come on CR, do a garage door opener review, jeez.

Add yet another person who is going to have to re-think their subscription to your service over the lack of garage door opener reviews...very dissapointing.

Another customer looking for garage door advice. I came here looking a year ago, ended up buying the standard Craftsman Sears model, and had the gears grind out in less than a year. Service guys says it happens on those models all the time. No help from CR there.

Now I'm back again, needing to buy yet another Garage Door opener, and CR still has not addressed nor compared the options. Can you at least open up a forum so that your users can post their own experiences?

WHAT? You must be joking! I've been a subscriber for more than 25 years, and until now I haven't needed to buy a garage door opener. But I do now...today, and it's more than shocking to learn that Consumer Reports doesn't report on these openers. With the variety of types and a whole range of prices you'd think that there would be on-going recommendations. You could at the very least have an article on the types and the benefits of each. I guess I'll need to do some internet searching for information. Hope I can find some unbiased reporting. Bottom line... I'm going to remember this at renewal time...and in the meantime I’ll let everyone I know that Consumer Reports has absolutely no information on these, and based on the number of comments on this topic it appears that it is going to stay that way. CONSUMER REPORTS...YOU’RE DOING YOUR SUBSCRIBERS A BIG DISSERVICE ON THIS ONE!

I also came to look for garage door opener reviews. I need to replace a 25 year old Stanley.

Add me to the list of people who would like garage door opener reviews, heading to Sears this weekend with zero info.

What more disappointing than the fact that 8 months of requests has not motivated CR to conduct a test of garage door openers is that CR or its moderator has not even had the courtesy to respond to these requests.

I expect better from the industry leader.

Really disappointed that garage door openers are not reviewed. I have two and both just went bad. Really don't want to repeat mistake I made in purchasing them. How about asking members what they would like to see reviewed?

yep, also need a garage door opener.... also disappointed that there are no reviews...

My Sears opener quit yesterday. Has a short in it somewhere. Not going to by another Sears, 3rd one in 12 years.
Consumer Reports' 2002 coverage is outdated, and unavailable for Garage Door openers. Try www.consumersearch.com.

I had to purchase a new garage door opener. CR doesn't have any info on it, but here is mine. I bought a Chamberlain 1/2 HP Whisper Belt Drive. Time to install (including taking down old opener) was about 3 hours. Easy to understand instructions with good diagrams. It is a little expensive at $218 at Lowe's, but it is the last garage door opener I will hopefully have to purchase. It is unbelievably quite. The only noise I hear in the garage is the sound of hinges on the bi-fold door. We will see how it's life is, but I have not seen anything negative about Chamberlain's garage door openers on other rating websites. Hope this helps.

nothing on garage doors or openers, come on CR LETS GET WITH IT????????

GARAGE DOOR OPENER WENT OUT TODAY 7-31-09, I LOOKED HERE FIRST AND FOUND THE SAME - NO RATINGS.

WHY NO RESPONSE FROM CR?

I was seeking a garage door opener review, too. And now I am irritated for having wasted time reading page after page reading posts trying to find the CR response.

If the comments are moderated, why hasn't CR moderator posted some kind of note, like "It will be brought up at our monthly meeting" or "Our product testing schedule is full until 2012" or are we just wasting our time posting to this board?

What is the proper channel for 'voting' or requesting particular products to be tested?

Meh!

I got to CR for EVERYTHING that I buy! Now I need a new garage door opener and I feel LOST>>>>>

I too came looking for a review of garage door openers. Very very surprised they don't have them. Even more surprised that this thread has been requesting them for months and is up to 10 pages and still nothing.

Ditto re: disappointed that CR doesn't have review of garage door openers. However, according to one site I found, not a lot of reviews are out there. This site is pretty good though and I use it quite a bit as it aggregates reviews. If the moderator allows it, the website is called consumersearch.com and here's a link for garage door openers page: http://www.consumersearch.com/garage-door-openers

I cannot believe CR does not test garage door openers. Add me to the list complaining.

I have been a subscriber for many years and rely on being able to find information needed. I am stunned there is no information on overhead garage doors and openers. Please do something in this area.

I am dissapointed that CR does not test garage door openers.Just kept up my subscription and this one of the first things I wanted to check

Came looking for garage door opener compairisons and reviews...sadly, they are not here.

Holy cow. 10 pages (probably 150 to 200 people??) of requests for a garage door opener review and no response from CR. This will be my first purchase of a garage door opener and I didn't want to end up with something noisy and useless. VERY DISAPPOINTED that CR hasn't reviewed these.

How many subscribers need to request in order for CR to respond? I'm a subscriber for at least 10 years. I only use CR about once a year, if that, but when I do, I rely almost 100% on what they recommend.

An article is needed about Home Warranties -- are they ever worth it? When do people generally get the best service -- some of the reviews on the web suggest the best service is provided when you are about renew. Is it regional? Some of the warranty plans seem to be nothing more than scams -- I think Consumer Reports should be able to provide some valuable guidance to their readers. (So far, I have found one company that has really positive feedback from its customers, but they serve only Colorado.) Does that mean all other states should consider this a waste of money?

It appears there has been no response from Consumer Reports to more than 8 months of customer requests for reviews on garage door openers.

It would appear that Consumer Reports should do a Consumer Report on itself. While it is more of a service organization than one selling a product, I find this situation surprising and alarming. Perhaps it is time to vote with my wallet and not renew my membership the next time it expires.

Also looking for a new garage door opener and a new garage door. Unhappy that I haven't found anything on your site for ratings.

I came here looking for garage door openers review, too. However, re: the Liftmaster comment, we bought this house 3 years ago with a Liftmaster opener-- I think it is quite old, and still "going strong." It's just I'm looking at models for a different garage door.
Marsha

Another request for garage door openers. I am surprised there is no info on CR???????

looking for garage door report too!

Add me to the list of disappointed people that thought garage door openers would be an obvious topic for CR. Looks to me like there is a ground swell of demand out here.

Add my name to the list disappointed with CR on the garage door & opener testing.

Thanks go out to the poster who submitted the external links. I plan to try the Chamberlain 3/4hp Chain Drive. For others researching, beware Genie's chain drive products. Their guide rail basically mounts into a plastic base. Mine began cracking within 6mos and is now completely inoperable in less than a year. Its not even worth pursuing the warranty since its clear it won't last.

Re/ This thread...
I see the comments go back 8 months without a staff reply. That's surprising considering CR's typical customer's profile. You know, us picky demanding types who gladly spend days researching products before we buy. Regardless, this thread has helped me come to the conclusion that I've made a 2nd poor purchase decision. I'll be remedying that just as soon as I finish this post by canceling my subscription. Its not just the lack of garage door opener reviews or unresponsiveness, but several other products whose reviews either are outdated, non-existent, or just not very thorough.

Its sad to see a strong brand dying.

Add me to the list of many. Lots of models to choose from out there and very confusing. I've always relied on CR to help out in these situations.

I have a Stanley garage door opener (~10 years old). The safety sensor at the bottom of the door is dying, and often prevents the door from closing when there's no obstruction. Stanley no longer supports any garage door openers, so I either need to replace the sensors with something similar or replace the opener. I wanted advice from CR. Lowes and Home Depot offer Genie and Chamberlain, and there are others out there, but I have absolutely no information on reliability and availability of replacement accessories such as sensors.

We need a report on garage door openers. I've been looking on CR for about 8 months, but have seen nothing yet, and I don't know why.

Hey CR, I am also in the market for a garage door opener AND a water heater!!! Can you please test these items OR post why you are unable to run tests on these?

Yes, I am looking for info on garage door openers! Thanks for comments from other CR customers on personal experiences with their own openers. I, too, wish CR would do some research on openers. Thank You!

My 38 yr old home had a Chamberlian garage door opener that replacement parts became unavailable. Replace it with a new Chamberlian about 4 yrs ago from COSTCO. Saw one there a couple of months ago. Need I say more!

I'm a subscriber and I came here looking for a review of garage door openers. I'm very disappointed. By the way, I only found this page by using an advanced google search. The consumerreports search engine leave a LOT to be desired.

I have looked at least 5 times re.: garage door openers
now I see the posted coments no testing since 2002
that is disapointing to say the least
and I see I am not the only one
