After March 10 recall of 1.6 million refrigerators, Maytag deals with overwhelming number of consumer calls
March 16, 2009 12:05 PM

Maytag Recall Phone ProblemsOn March 10, we covered the recall of 1.6 million refrigerators made by Maytag due to a fire hazard. We've since received comments from readers of our original post complaining about their inability to reach Maytag about the recall and arrange for a free repair, an issue the company is trying to address:

"Due to significantly higher-than-expected call volumes, we experienced system outages on March 10 and March 11," said Jill Saletta, director of external communications for Whirlpool Corporation, which owns Maytag. "This reduced the ability for customers to self-schedule our interactive voice response and Web tools. The Maytag recall team has been responding to the outages by increasing system capacity and adding live call agents. We sincerely regret any inconvenience these issues may have caused consumers. Consumers can contact the recall hotline again today at 866-533-9817 or visit the Web site."

I just recently purchased a maytag refrigerator model #MFI2067AES
how worried should I be? considering the latest recall. I was assured
by the salesman @Home depot that it was a good brand backed by
Whirlpool. Concerned consumer

How is it that Whirlpool,(Maytag) has not informed its consumers about this problem? I have a Maytag Refrig. Have heard nothing.
What are the issues...and what year? Need to know.

I just purchased a Maytag refrigerator model MTF214EEQ today. Is that particular model a call-back?

I read of the recall on ConsumerReports.org. I visited the Maytag website and found the recall information easy to access, and scheduling a repair was super-easy. Upon entering my zipcode I was presented with the names of several appliance repair businesses that would service my refrigerator alongside available date and time slots. Even the telephone number for each service-provider was given, which I did use on the day before the service appointment to narrow my time-frame. I easily selected an appointment on-line. Within a week my refrigerator was repaired. The fix itself took a very short time.
Bottom line, use the website instead of the telephone.

Renovating and really like the look of Jenn-Air JFC2089HPY French Door Refrigerator 20 C.F., Glass Front.
I am getting wary of the Maytag quality. Especially if I am spending so much.
Is there another company with black glass front panels?

Just now tried the website scheduling and after entering all the pertinent information, "the system has encountered an error." I had talked to a phone droid back on March 11, scheduled an appointment, and no-one came. Then I called the service desk of the dealer, and they were having problems getting through as well. I'm also concerned that because I had arranged for a repair that their computer thinks the repair was done and I won't be able to get a free repair. I'm calling the dealer again today to see if things have improved after these few weeks.

I can't understand why, since I sent in the registration card, I was not informed about the recall. They like you to believe that's what the registration is all about! As for setting up a repair appointment, that was easy...just hope they show up that day.

We had a fire started in our kitchen on 04/09/09 by one of the recalled refrigerators which has done considerable damage to our home. I found out about this recall when I called the store that the unit was purchased from the following day of the fire and described what the refrigerator had done. I have contacted Whirlpool by the phone number provided by their retailer and things have not gone very smoothly so far. After over an hour on the phone, I had been told that is was a covered model, then that it wasn't an affected model and rudely asked in any one died in the fire, to the last person who said that it was an affected model and she sent a service representative out who confirmed it was the model affected and that it had the compressor that was known to start the fires. I'm now waiting for the holiday to be over so I can speak further to them so I can see what they should do, but the last person already indicated that I would get much faster service to use my home owners insurance to cover the loses which doesn't seem right to me.
It doesn't seem that they have grasped the magnitude of this situation, somebody could die, they announced that they knew of this problem a month ago, I purchased this unit new and have received nothing to tell me of the danger, to this I was informed that the mailing had started on the west side of my state and it was heading east. They need to make phone calls! I've already checked my family and some neighbors to make sure that they don't have this fire hazard in their homes and anyone reading this should do the same.
There is no warning sign, the unit opperated properly right up to the time that it burnt!

I just purchased a maytag fridge(bottom freezer) and stove and now after reading some of these reviews am concerned.

On April 4th I had a recall appointment done to my refrigerator.
April 5th the unit did not work. After two more service calls and a new compressor the unit is now not working. I was told that I would have to pay to get a new one with a prorated discount. I feel that I have been wronged. Is there any advice out there?

I called & got an automated service that sent an A&E serviceman the next day Friday 4/24. He was suppose to call before arriving but he did not. He did the work but left no paperwork. I had no proof of him being there or doing anything. Sat morning my freezer had defrosted and frige was warm leaving large puddle. Called Maytag they gave me A&E servicman # and said I had to call. Next available day for sevice was Monday! Monday afternoon A&E serviceman arrives again without calling. I meet him at home and he says part was installed wrong which caused my compressor to go bad. He will order me a new compressor and install on Friday. I call A&E and ask for claim for reimbursement of food. It is not their policy to reimburse for food loss. I was told Customer Relations will get back to me. Compressor arrives Wed 4/29 I call A&E @ 5:15pm to schedule appt. I am told next available is Friday or Sat. I’m not STUPID. I refuse a Friday or Sat appt and demand next day service. I get nowhere! Meanwhile A&E Customer Relations has never called me. I believe they are ficticious! I call Maytag and plead to give me another company that will install on Thursday 4/30 and I’m told only A&E can finish the job. IF I fax an itemized food loss Maytag will review it HAHA.! I am using a cooler to keep a few perishables and I have to take vacation time every time they come for service. I am SCREWED! I don’t know where to turn for help. Maytag has offered $100 to help with food loss which was close to $400 plus my time off of work. I will never buy Maytag again and have advised all I know how the Lonely Maytag repairman is false advertising!

My Maytag refrigerator caught fire in mid-December, 2008 and I had to purchase a new refrigerator (not Maytag!) I did not know about the recall until I received a notification by mail in late April, and when I called their hotline, twice, I was given two absurd explanations about why Maytag could do nothing for me (e.g., provide compensation for what was obviously a faulty refrigerator):

1) The refrigerator is no longer in my possession.

2) The problem occurred before they issued the recall.

The Maytag representatives I spoke with were clearly "on script," and I do not wish to waste further time calling again. I have been advised to take Maytag to small claims court, but wonder about other options.

Reply for Cathy:
I signed a subrogation form for my home owners insurance company to go after Maytag for their fire hazard. They had my old refrigerator wrapped and stored for future needs. We are now enjoying our LG french door with bottom freezer which has plenty of neat features to make the change worth while and the fact that I'll eventually get all those Maytag products out of our home.
I have a feeling that my insurance company has paid for other fires that were caused by Maytags and other products manufactured by Whirlpool Corporation with the same recalled components (Jen-Air, Crosley, Amana, Admiral, Performa by Maytag, Maytag & Magic Chef) and hopefully they'll get the culprits to pay, so you might offer your agent that information and when and if they get reimbursed you should get your deductible back also.

The last refrigerator we bought was a Maytag, and I certainly will never buy one again. They never gave us the advertised rebate, only a partial. That should have been a clue! It's a lousy product. I can't tell you how many times I've repaired it, since the first repair done by a Maytag man that overcharged us... Horrible product, horrible customer service. There is nothing nice to say about Maytag or this refrigerator. Except that refrigerators are so expensive, we look forward to purchasing another refrigerator.

I called today to schedule an appointment for repair. After speaking to the computer then transferred to a human and giving the same information all over again, I was advised special handling was needed for the appointment. While being transferred I was transferred to a busy signal and then the call was disconnected. I would say that is an indication they still have problems and it is now June 02, 2009. I guess the Maytag repairman isn't so lonely after all. I just hope my house doesn't burn down before I actually get a repairman to come out.

What a mess. This recall was originally made in March??!! I didn't get a letter until June! Had a difficult time setting up appt. as their website wasn't working and had to go through the phone thing twice. Then the repairman was very late - then went to the wrong address on the other side of town. Said he would try and figure out how to get to me and call me back. 20 minutes later the service co. office called telling me I missed the repairman. After controlling myself, I explained I never left and that the repairman called and I knew he was at the wrong house and better find his way to mine. He finally showed up 45 minutes later. Ever since the repair my ice has been melting into a clump at the bottom of the ice maker and re-freezing into a solid block. Clearly whatever they did has caused the new compressor to not turn on soon enough when the freezer gets warm. Probably also explains why my food is spoiling so fast. I'm in the middle of trying to sell my house and now I have to deal with this disaster. I will never buy another Maytag product again. Who knows how long it will take to get this resolved. I am furious.

We had the part replaced quickly after contacting the Maytag Corporation. However, the very next day the refrigerator compressor was not working. Maytag send out another repairman to fix but CHARGED us for the call and part - $286.00 - and stated it was not related to the recall. They claim it is a coincidence. I don't believe it. I'm looking for anyone else this may have happened to.

MAGTAG F*ING SUCKS! i BOUGHT A REFRIGERATOR FROM THESE INCOMPETENTS IN JULY AND HAVE NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS SINCE. Everything in the fridge is freezing and then building up pools of water. There is such a buildup of ice in the freezer that the light doesn't work and there is a constant BANGING and cranking noise all throughout the day and night.

The Brick, where I purchased the lemon, has washed their hands of it. Transglobal sent a repair guy to my home 3 time, the final time his solution was a piece to Styrofoam and some caulking.

I want this piece of crap replaced! I can not afford to have this happen right now!

Model#: MBR1952KES3
Serial#: KY1226796

Does anyone have a similar problem, or can offer me some advice?

Thanks,
Michelle

We bought a Maytag wide by side in Sept/05, spent $3000, and the motor went in oct/09. It is now Jan.4/10 and we still have a fridge that is not working at all, everytime that we call they tell us the part is backordered! (Have called every week since the first report, they would not call and follow up!)

We have lost about $1500 in groceries and they will do nothing about it. Why is it our fault that a part takes 3 months!! As of Jan. 2nd we have our food on the back deck in coolers and in a small fidge. They should be ashamed of themselves on how they conduct their business! The call centre droids just follow a script and will do nothing to help.

I bought a house with a Jenn Air fridge and recieved a letter about the recall. I had the repairman come out and fix it. Since then, my freezer freezes up about every 3-4 weeks, and my fridge stops working. I have called Maytag many times and they say it has nothing to do with the recall and is a separate problem, and I have to pay for it myself. Every month I have to bring in a cooler and thaw out and restart the thing! A lot of money wasted on food gone bad. I will NEVER buy any thing from Maytag again. Horrible products and horrible service, taking no responsibility for their mess ups.

Maytag.
I have a problem with a Maytag built in dishwasher I purchased in Dec. '07. I had repair men here and the problem persists.

The problem: It is turning my silver ware dull by "etching". My clear glasses are also beginning to be distroyed by a cloudiness on the glasses. I use my dishwasher daily and by doing so I am destroying my silverware and dishes and glasses.

Help!
Maytag said I could purchase a new dishwasher and they would pay a small percentage towards the new purchase! We.., I'm not rich and cannot just go out and buy a new one.

Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Purchased a top-bottom Maytag Stainless Steel fridge in May 2010. Went on vacation in July 2010. Came home to a dead fridge. We lost at least $200. in food. Our appliance store replaced a part for us free of charge, but said they'd have to come out 2-3 times to try to get Maytag to declare it a "lemon".

Have had no luck getting reimbursed for the food we lost.

I live in the UK and our £1700 Maytag french door fridge freezer has just stopped working after 3 years. I have told I can pay £239 for a service engineer visit and an extra year warranty but think I will save the money to buy a new german fridge freezer. The fridge freezer we had before was an Amana (I didn't realise it was the same company) and it also stopped working after 3 years. We payed extra to get it fixed and it worked for a week. I will definitely never buy Maytag again.
