In our latest review of lawn mowers, our testers found loads of impressive models, but a few simply failed to make the cut.
None of the 50 gas and electric mowers earned an excellent rating in all three cutting modes—side-discharging, mulching, and bagging—and some didn't provide consistent cutting. Read our May 2009 report to get all the details (available to subscribers).
Since it's important to match the mower to your yard, remember this advice when you're search for a new mower:
• Self-propelled mowers that change speed to match the terrain make for
easier mowing but can take some getting used to. And rear-wheel drive definitely helps a mower handle
small inclines, especially with a full grass bag.
• Electric mowers are quiet and more environmentally friendly but are best only for smaller yards. On corded models, it can take some effort to keep the electric cord out of harm’s way.
• Bagging performance varies. (As the video shows, we measure and weigh full bags to see which can hold more clippings before clogging; the more a bag holds, the less frequently you have to empty it.) The side-discharge and mulching on some mowers spread clippings so unevenly that you'd have to rake them afterward.
• Features like electric starting, washout ports, and comfortable handles are worthwhile. e-mail | Twitter
