Pssst, SNL: The Sharper Image catalog is no more
April 13, 2009 4:53 PM

The Sharper Image CatalogThe writers and producers of Saturday Night Live obviously didn't take our advice when we offered to vet their content for accuracy.

During the April 11, 2009, episode, hosted by Zac Efron, SNL ran a mock promo for an organization called the Alliance of Direct Mail Marketers. The spoof targeted the darker side of direct mailing, namely its leveling of forests to produce the avalanche of catalogs that overwhelm our mailboxes each year. At one point in the sketch, actor Jason Sudeikis held up a catalog from The Sharper Image, setting off our error alarm.

As we've reported, the Sharper Image declared bankruptcy in February 2008 and announced the shuttering of its stores in June 2008. The company might be making a comeback, as we noted in January, but its catalogs are a thing of the past.

This is the second week in a row that we found a minor gaffe by SNL. In the April 4, 2009, episode, President Barack Obama, played by Fred Armisen, detailed which American companies would get an infusion of cash from Uncle Sam and which would be shuttered. When it came to lightbulbs, SNL showed an incandescent lightbulb instead of an energy-efficiency compact fluorescent. We took issue because our energy-conscious president would have definitely leaned toward showing high-efficiency CFLs.

As longtime viewers of SNL, we point out these oversights not to nitpick but to keep the show's culturally relevant image sharp.—Daniel DiClerico | | Twitter

Note to all: Our offer to vet SNL content is not real, just like the show's parody commercials.

Great post! Saturday Night Live does need to be a bit more sensitive of their skits. Thanks for posting it.

Next thing you know, you're going to be complaining about how the commercials on the show aren't for real products...

The Sharper Image is definitely making a comeback! They have decided to enter the age of ecommerce and are moving their product focus from catalogs to the internet. Think of it as an effort to "Go Green!" You can check out their adaptation at http://thesharperimagereview.com/.
