Of soccer and coffee: Save money on coffee by skipping the fancy stuff
April 2, 2009 5:56 PM

Maybe this over-the-top youth-soccer coach should have gone with the decaf.

Last week, before the start of the current soccer season, Michael Kinahan sent out an e-mail to parents of the girls' soccer team he was coaching in Scituate, Massachusetts. But it wasn't the usual rah-rah, we're-gonna-have-a-fun-season note.

Instead, in what Kinahan said was "largely (albeit not completely) meant in jest," according to The Patriot Ledger, he wrote parents all manner of outlandish comments about the team he called "Green Death," including:

• "We do not cater to superstars, but prefer the gritty determination of journeymen who bring their lunch pail to work every week, chase every ball and dig in corners like a Michael Vick pit bull."

• "The kids will run, they will fall, get bumps, bruises and even bleed a little. Big deal, it's good for them (but I do hope the other team is the one bleeding)."

• "And speaking of meat, I expect that the ladies be put on a diet of fish, undercooked red meat and lots of veggies. No junk food."

Read the rest of the e-mail on Deadspin.com.

Some parents and the Scituate Youth Soccer League weren't amused, and Kinahan resigned. Perhaps those parents were offended because Kinahan implored them to not be "yuppies who sit on the sidelines in their L.L. Bean chairs sipping mocha-latte-half-caf-chinos while discussing reality TV."

In the spirit of Kinahan's coffee commentary, we'd recommend that Scituate parents check out our report on ground 100 percent Colombian coffees (available to subscribers). In the caffeinated category, we found that Eight O'Clock Coffee 100% Colombian served up the best combination of taste and price. And given its modest cost—only 15 cents per cup—it's definitely less pricey than a coffeehouse concoction.—Kimberly Janeway | Twitter

I could not find a report on coffee grinders only this video in this Blog on a completely different subject, also the video kept stopping and starting on the first playing, and was of very little help or use.
I have found a Black and Decker Mill type Grinder at my local WalMart for around $38.00 and was looking for a rating on this machine vs. one from other Mfg. such as Kitchen Aid, Krups, or Cuisinart. If you are going to post video reports make them longer with more useful information and also your search was of no help all it gave me was links to these video blogs and not to a report from your magazine or the web site.

I agree. What good is the video telling us you tested 3 models of blade grinders vs 3 models of gear grinders if you do not disclose which ones were tested, and most importantly, how you rated them. Afterall, isn't that why we pay for this service??

And I thought it was just me! You show us a very short video about coffee grinders and I learn only that there are 2 types and don't buy a combo unit. After the video I seee that if I go to Consumerreports.com I will get more information and comparisons of the units. Guys.... I am ALREADY at the site!!! ... and I learned that my $26 subscription was a hoax!! How do I rate your website?? NO STARS FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!

Information on the tests of coffee grinders, please. I do not have the January 2009 hard copy, only an on-line subscription; this has been (as the others have noted) so annoying and a waste of time. Does anyone in the CR organization read these postings? And when does that person take action?

Still no word on coffee grinders?! Please read these postings and get the word out for us!

It's now April of 2010, and still no reviews of coffee grinders, esp. burr-type? Come on guys, we don't all need extensive and flashy car reviews - sometimes less is more, hm?

I tried to veiw a report on COFFEE GRINDERS which was to be at this site. All I have found is others making the same discovery I did, NO REPORT, what is the problem ? I try to use your reports to o btain the best mechandise but I am loosing faith in your ability to do so. WHERE IS THE REPORT ????

I'd hoped I'd find ratings for burr grinders here. guess not.

Ditto to all of the other comments. I find Consumers less and less helpful compared to the many, many blogs on line and to such websites as ePinions. I have subscribed on line for about 3 or 4 years. I may have to reconsider. I really am stunned there is no report on burr grinders, just that silly little useless video.

Found this on a review of coffeemakers from Jan. 2009:

"Consider a separate grinder
It lets you save some or all of what you grind for later. Burr grinders, which crush the beans, tend to grind more uniformly than blade grinders, which chop them. We tested the burr-grinding Capresso Infinity 565, $140, Cuisinart Supreme Grind DBM-8, $50, and Krups GVX2, $60, and the blade-grinding Black & Decker CBG100S, $20, Mr. Coffee IDS77, $20, and Cuisinart Grind Central DCG-12BC, $30. The Capresso and Cuisinart burr models served up the most consistent results. But the $20 Mr. Coffee came close."

oddly enough, after Googling "consumer reports coffee grinders." I found the ABC7 news web site which has "teamed up with Consumer Reports" to review coffee grinders. (read: they are using the same coffee grinder video in the video about...on the CR site) but provides MORE detail, including model numbers, etc. Check it:

Seems that CR has done the work, but isn't providing it on the web site. :-/

I can't find anything on this website for which I, too, pay extra money, that gives me ratings of burr coffee grinders. I am very disappointed.

Over a year and still no coffee grinder research. Was interested in burr grinders. NO relevant information here.
