Decrease in energy use for the average washing machine in 2008 compared with a machine sold in 2000, even as the average capacity of a washer has grown by 9 percent in that time, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers' 2008 Energy Efficiency and Consumption Trends data for home appliances, released today. (The GE WCVH6800J[WW], $900 and a Best Buy, is shown.) AHAM also says the average 2008 refrigerator and 2008 dishwasher use 30 percent less energy than the average 2000 models. I wish CR would advertise the SHARP DECREASE IN SERVICE LIFE for the average new hi-tech washing machine as prominently as it does energy efficiency. Many repair technicians I speak to about clothes washer purchases do not advise buying ANY high-efficiency (Energy Star) machine with electronic controls, because they just don't last. Instead, they recommend a plain $400 top-load washer with conventional dial controls and transmission. You end up saving MONEY by NOT buying a high-efficiency washer, because you don't have to replace it as often!
While older conventional top-load washers of proven design can last up to 10 years or more, many of the new more expensive HE front-load and top-load washers are only going 3-5 years or so before MAJOR repairs are needed. Some don't even last that long. When they do need repair, parts for things like electronic circuit boards often cost $500 or more. They often aren't in stock, either, so you wait until the parts come in. Unless of course they've discontinued the parts already - so you are forced to buy a NEW $1000 washer...
I heard the same thing as Glen above from a service technician. Still, if you get an extended service plan, your machine should last 5 at least years, and you might be still ahead in terms of money saved.
