The $199 Garry Ultra Light vacuum is a "professional quality" vacuum that "loosens stubborn, even hidden ground-in dirt from your carpets" and other surfaces "the first time you pass over the dirt," touts the company's Web site.
But our recent testing found that the Garry doesn't live up to some of its performance claims or the hype you'll see in the infomercial for this upright vacuum. (Check out the discussion on our forums for reader reviews of the Garry Ultra Light.)
The Garry earned only a fair for deep-cleaning carpets, the lowest score among the uprights in our continuously updated vacuum ratings (available to subscribers). Even most rated canisters, which as a category tend to do less well on carpet cleaning than uprights, were better carpet cleaners than the Garry.
The Garry did excel at pet-hair pickup, was very low in emissions, and is most suitable for cleaning bare floors. But we also found that airflow was weak through the vacuum's included attachments, important for cleaning dust from curtains, upholstery, and the like.
The Garry's stated 9-pound weight would put it among the lightest uprights we've tested. But, unlike other 9-pound models we've tested, that weight doesn't include the hose, attachments, or power cord. Add in those elements, and the Garry weighs 12 pounds.
One appealing item you'll see on the Garry Web site is the promise of "free bags for life." But you have to pay $9.95 for the shipment of eight bags, and unless you cancel, the bags will keep coming every four months. Still, that $1.25-per-bag price is less than most replacement bags we see, and some microfiber bags cost up to $5.50 each.
Garry also offers a 30-day refund on the vacuum and, through its "Zero Maintenance No Hassle Warranty," no-cost replacement of a faulty vacuum—even if you caused the problem—for as long as you own the product. As with the bags, free isn't exactly no cost. You'll pay to ship the vacuum back to the manufacturer and $40 for shipment of the new model. All that on top of the $40 you spent on shipping in the first place.
The Garry might be appealing, but a better bet would be to consider a higher-performing vacuum from a brand with established reliability, such as the Dirt Devil Featherlite Bagless M085845, $60, or the Eureka Altima 2961, $80.
A final thing to keep in mind: When you buy a Garry vacuum, you automatically agree to resolve any dispute with the product's seller related to the Garry vacuum through arbitration. (Check out the site's terms and conditions for more details.) Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of this blog and Consumer Reports magazine, doesn't believe you should have to sign away your legal options in order to buy a product even before a dispute arises. Consumers Union also supports advocacy efforts to eliminate mandatory predispute arbitration clauses.—Ed Perratore | e-mail | Twitter | Forums | Facebook
Essential information: Our free vacuum-buying guide and October 2009 report offer lots of helpful shopping and usage tips.
I bought anew Garry Vac and after 3x use, the motor burned out. To try and replace it was a living nightmare. I spent 2.5 hours trying to talk to their offshore call center in India, hung up on me twice, and wait times were more than 20 minutes. They tried to charge me tax on the replacement (my Garry Ac was only 3 weeks old) I disputed that charge, then they ended up charging me $17.99 on my credit card for shipping but said they will reimburse me when I send the old vac back. I thought that was strange for them to do that without my permission.I went ahead and agreed because i was already a week without a vac and have expensive carpets and did not want to prolong the shipping. I just got my replacement, they said if I don't return the vac in 30 days they will charge my credit card $200. I returned it the next day I received it. Now waiting if they will honor reimbursing my $17.99 back. If the new vac breaks again I will demand full reimbursement of everything and make sure everyone in the world knows this is a cheap vac don't buy!!
I have read these posts and many on other review forums. While there are some comments with regard to not being able to really know who you are dealing with and the inability to adequately contact Garry, there are not unlike what happened when Dyson first came on the scene. A quick check on Ebay, one could/can thousands of "refurbs", which indicates that Dyson has a lot of service returns, etc., yet they have evolved and have become a respected brand. This too, may happen with Garry. It's a little too early to know. If they listen and tweak their product to continue to try to make a better vac, they may have something of value. I have loved my Oreck for almost 20 years, originally thinking that it too, was too good to be true, so, the foreseeable future, I probably won't buy anything. One interesting complaint with the Garry comments has been the cost of bags and availability at Walmart. I can't go to Wally World to get my Oreck bags either and frankly, this should not be the determining factor for the purchase of a vac.
My vac froze up and motor would not run. I called and they
charged me $50. for shipping new Vac out to my address, plus
I was obligated to send old one back within 30 days.
My question is why does it take so long and why does it
cost so much to ship? Also why is there no service center
near by that could fix these minor problems without the
hassle. Seems like the shipping is where you are making the
money.
My Garry Vac was purchased 4 months ago. Yesterday, during regular vacuuming, the motor burned up. The first customer rep I spoke to was rude and hung-up on me. The second, not much better. They insisted on charging me $50 for ship & hand to return it and get a new one. I questioned this because I have already paid for s&h when I originally bought it. It does not cost $50 to send it to CA. They are making a huge profit on this s&h fee. They sure do not stand by their product. If you are thinking about purchasing one...think no more. Get another brand. It's not worth the hassle.
PS. Free Bags, bologna! The s&h fee is $10 for this.
I was looking for a light weight, yet powerful vac. I bought the vacuum in the spring of 2009, before there were any personal experiences noted online....should have waited. While the vac is still operational, I would rate its effectiveness on carpet as fair, at best. It works best on tile and wood floors. Swifter does just as well as this $200 waste. Pushing on carpeted floors is a chore, again working best on non-carpeted areas. The lack of on-board tools is annoying and cumbersome. The only (marginally) redeeming feature is the bags at a buck twenty-five (S&H cost is $10 for 8 bags) is a pretty good deal.I'll keep this turkey until it breaks then go back to the brand I like best--Hoover--can't beat the bagged Windtunnel, IMHO.
DON'T BUY THIS MACHINE. It's too LOUD and not worth the $199
I returned within the 30 days and they HUNG UP on me 3 times before I was told to call back in 2-3hrs to speak to a supervisor/manager. They charged a 2nd pymt of 49.95 3 days AFTER already receiving my return (confirmed & insured).
I will contact my bank and STOP any further payments. Then I'll contact the BBB (better business) and file a complaint.
DISSATISFIED!
Thank you for this review. It saved me a waste of money.
The Garry is worth about $60 - and maybe not even. Not only will you be 100% unhappy with your Garry, you will spend your life savings on replacement bags. Sure, they say they are free on the ad, all you have to pay is $10 every time and you have to wait to receive them. Basically you need a second vacuum just in case you run out of bags. Or, you can choose not to vacuum for 5-20 days while you wait for the $10 "free" replacement bags. Go buy a name brand. The product is a total scam.
If you are considering giving this vacuum a chance DON'T! I bought the vacuum and the motor burned out within three weeks. I called them, they sent me a replacement that cost me $50.00 in S & H. I sent the old one back within two weeks and received delivery confirmation from the post office and 27 days after their warehouse received the vacuum, THEY DEDUCTED $150.00 OUT OF MY CHECKING ACCOUNT! When I called they said that I had not returned the product, to which I immediately faxed the confirmation. The money taken out of my checking account resulted in a NSF and now two more have occured. Garry said that it would take about 48 hours to put the $150.00 back in and then I had to fax them proof from the bank of all of the NSF charges. THE GREATEST IRONY IS THAT THE REPLACEMENT VACUUM LASTED 2 DAYS BEFORE THE MOTOR BURNTED UP! I haven't even bothered to send it back. I just figured that I would have to a really stupid buy on my part.
Thanks to all of you who took the time to write these comments. You saved me time, aggravation and money.
Wow! I was planning on buying a Garry, but had an in home demo of a Kirby. Loved the demo, but remebered the Garry infomercials. After reading these, I think I will stick with the Kirby. It costs more up front, but it has a life time warranty and a local shop for bags, tune-ups and repairs. If I never buy another vac, it will actually save me money. It's also a shampooer. Thanks for the Garry tips!!
I recently fell for the free bags for life, free steam mop, lifetime warranty and purchased this product. Right away I knew I didn't want it as it was EXTREMELY LOUD and it started having this burning smell. I turned it off and called the Rep...they told me it was loud because of the "strong motor" and that the burning smell was just the "breaking in period for the plastic parts". They advised me to keep trying it and the smell would go away. I tried it one more time and decided enough was enough....it is WAY TOO LOUD and the burning smell is not going away.
So then I got into the "Product Return Merry-Go-Round" of them offering me discounts to keep the product....that I lost the initial 39.90 shipping fee for the vacuum, plus the 29.99 shipping fee for the "free" steam mop...but the 9.99 shipping fee for the "free" bags. So I then clarified, well if there really is something wrong with this vacuum then I must pay another $50 to send it back to you and then pay for the shipping fee for you to send back to me the repaired vacuum? Yes that is correct. Well, I am going to suck up my losses and send this back today! This is a total scam!
Thank you all so much for taking the time and posting your commets. Saved me alot of money. With 4 babies, I gotta save as much money as possible. Thanks again...so much...Crystal.
Wow, I was about to enter my credit card info on their website when I paused and decided to look up online reviews, will be heading out to brick and mortar department stores instead to buy a name brand for lots less money and less aggravation. This comment board saved me!
Very happy I read these comments before considering buying a Garry. I WON'T. Thanks to all for the "heads-up", and hope your next purchase will be a good one.
Wow, I am so glad I searched Consumer reports for information on the "Garry" vacuum. I was almost ready to replace my 12 year old Oreck, because the sales pitch on the infomercial was so convincing. Thanks to these comments and stories, I have saved $$ and, more importantly, an incredible amount of aggravation!
Thanks! :)
WHEW!!! Am I ever glad that I read the customer comments?!!!(THANK YOU ALL!!!) I was almost "sucked" into the Garry scam. I am so thankful that you folks took the time to warn others-as my husband and I just finished watching the amazing Garry infomercial. We then decided to purchase a Garry vacuum due to claims of being lightweight and touting the better-than-others suction power. I told my husband that I would google the Garry before we call to place the order...
I will stick with my (HEAVY) Bissell Power Groom/Pet Eraser. It works great on picking up everything including pethair.
Again, Thank you for the consumer sharing of information. We appreciate your time and we hope that you all get your money returned with the least hassell possible.
Thanks for all these reviews. I couldn't wait to order the Garry Vac after watching the infomercial. The lifetime warranty, life time free bags along with the claim to be excellent on pet hair (I have two dogs that should be bald with the amount of hair they shed!) had me sold. Thank God my daughter directed me to this blog site. Between her direction and your comments I guess I'll stick with my Dyson (which I'm not happy with either) until I find one that will clean my carpets, floors AND pick up the dog hair.
Wow! Just saw the infomercial on America One (49-3, renamed as 24-3 or WNWO-3).... Thought a few things didn't jive. The first thing I noticed started with the actual infomercial... The black woman over acting. William Shatner was more natural. This was the first red flag.
I also did not ever talk about the customer service reps. I figured it was because our American jobs weren't to be found here in America. HUGE FACTOR FOR ME BUYING A PRODUCT, USUALLY 8 OUT OF 10 POINTS, IN BUYING. THE MORE IN AMERICA, THE MORE I AM THINKING OF BUYING THE PRODUCT, EVEN AT A PREMIUM PRICE. Hope Garry Vacs actually see that. Luckily, I am a sketic by nature, and logical by choice. The Garry Vac Corperation needs to know we do exist...and hopefully more of us will come out of the woodwork. On that same exact note... we were not told of where it was made... probably Cambodia or China... how sad.
I also noticed another thing, not any single one of the tested "dirts" was ever ground in, for us to actually see it working on that type of dirt. Laying pet hair on top is not an accurate depiction of cleaning. Nobody ground any dirt into the carpet by foot or broom. That kind of concerned me about them attempting to market to me. Dirt NEVER lays on top of a carpet!
9 Lbs.... Well lets see.... Plastic motor or weak metal motor. No wonder why so many complaints of motors dying.
I also thought that the "price" of the steamer, to be included was $100.00. For a floor steamer, unless it was made out of gold or platinum, was way overpriced.... so the "free Gift, at $100 probably was a little overblown.
Note that this was my first time watching this infomercial. I thank you all for posting other reviews of this product.
I hope that this will make people use more critical thinking, when you see something on TV.... and try to research it, to confirm suspicions, or to show how a product may work or perform.
Note: I realize America One nor WNWO-DT is responsible for the content... and do not fault them for showing the infomercial.
Thank you all for reviewing this product and letting us know about your problems with the vac itself and the terrible customer service dept. we appreciate the heads up we were tempted to buy this product. Guess its true... if it seems to good to be true, it is! Thanks again
The infomercial was sucking us in and is still running as I write this. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to everyone who posted their experience and just saved me the hassle and money!
We purchased a Garry vacuum three months ago, and after waiting one month for delivery found it was only sent with one bag (another four weeks to receive them). At first, it appeared to do a satisfactory job, but not as portrayed. Last week, during a normal sweep of the rug and tile floor, a large sound was heard, and the engine stopped working. Large and small pieces of white plastic began to fall out of the machine.
We called customer service several times, and had a “manager” ask if we had white pieces of plastic fall out of the machine! A coincidence? I don’t think so!
Since then, no one at Garry is interested in returning our calls. After researching on the internet (I wish I had done this first!) we find we are not the only ones who have had this problem. No wonder you only provide a replacement – junk for junk!
Do not buy this cheap vacuum cleaner. Absolutley awful. After my original purchase, the replacement broke in under 30 days. They offered to send me a new one, free of charge from cost or shipping and I told them not to bother and keep it. I will just trash mine. I wish I could try and contact the people who produce the infomercials or any celebrities that endorse this product and let them know how dissatisfied I am.
Thanks everyone for your comments. I have not heard anyone say one good thing about this piece of crap. Don't they have laws protecting the consumer against issues like this. Everyone that purchased one needs to participate in a class action lawsuit to stop itteates like this from getting richer. Just goes to show actors will promote anything for the paycheck.
My wife and I would like to say thank you to everyones review. If it wasn't for your great reviews we probably would of been sucked in to purchasing a Garry vacuum cleaner. It sounds like the informercial has more sucking power of new customers that the Garry vacuum has. I do feel bad for the people who actually purchased the Garry and I know they will go on to consumer websites for their own protection next time.
I think it's about time us Americans start buying Made in USA products even if it cost more. We need to start supporting our country and putting more of our people back to work.
Thanks,
Dan and Pat
DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF JUNK! The Garry company should be ashamed of themselves! Someone needs to step in and put them out of business -- it’s a SCAM!! FRAUD!! We sent back our first pile of junk because it started making an obnoxiously loud noise after only about a month. Then, the replacement “vacuum” started coughing up some of its internal engine pieces after only a couple of weeks! I have been a happy homemaker for over 15 years now and have NEVER had trouble with a vacuum until the Garry. Sadly, we have no recourse -- no way of getting our money back. But they just keep raking in the cash -- one unwitting victim at a time. It’s so wrong!
I am so thankful for the nice people who took the time to write about this vacuum. I was JUST about to order one. I was very impressed with what I saw on tv, but now there is no way I will ever buy one of these things. What a scam. Thanks again.
Buy an Oreck! Save yourself the hassle! I brought a Garry vacuum and it was not working after 4 months. I thought the Garry was going to be the answer to my vacuum prayers instead it has turned into a vacuum hell. To use the product replacement you have to pay an outrageous shipping and handling fee of 50.00 dollars. If the vacuum needs to be replaced every few month( based on customers blogs, it seems the vacuum will only last about 3 months) you will be paying for this product again and again.
With Credit card in Hand and the TV still on I was all ready to grab the phone and make the call to order, but something pushed me to the computer instead. I am so very greatful that I read ALL of your reviews. Thank You, Thank You Very Very Much "YOU ALL" Saved me alot of TIME and MONEY. this is a great site Thanks Again.
Thank you all for your comments. I should have followed my mind and checked before I ordered the Gary last night. Thank God I have time to cancel the order (3 business day consumer cancellation law). I will be on the phone on Monday morning cancelling this order. Let this note serve as verification that I attempted to cancel through the ordering service today and was told I had to talk to customer service, who is not open today.
A Gary vacuum was tested by Consumer Reports. Gary tested worst out of 40 top vacuums. It does not deep clean carpets well. Gary only weights 9 lbs. after you remove all the attachments including the hose and the cord. Never believe infomercials. Check for consumer reviews before you believe the hype and make a purchase you will regret. If you order in a moment of weakness, call immediately to cancel the order (when you come to your right mind). This goes for Gary vacuums and any other product that does not have the type of performance reviews that back up what the infomercial claims. Be smart, check before you order.
Thank you all for your posts. My elderly mother who is on disability was planning to order one. They called her about 5 times yesterday. She told them she could not afford it this month, but they kept her on the phone for 20 minutes trying to talk her in to buying one. She finally told them she'll buy it next month then they kept her on another 5 minutes. I will now have time to warn her!!
I had not one but two & working on my third replacement (white plastic piece inside the motor keep breaking)..this product is pure junk & it's costly to send them back!! DO NOT BUY GARRY!!! awful customer service backed up with a worse vacuum..buyer beware..junk is an understatement
THANK YOU to those of you who took the time to write comments! My husband and I were seriously considering ordering just now, and on a whim, I googled it. Hope the favor is returned to you all sometime!
Do not buy this vacuum, it is a nightmare dealing with these people. Like mentioned before by others, they want you to pay shipping both ways to replace defective units !!!! Our motor burnt out after 4 months. Customer service reads from a book . Be warned !
oh my god please do not purchse this piece of junk it is the worse scam of junk you will ever bring into your home , my first was used less than 6 times the motor burned up ,the secound one was used two times and the same thing , the motor burnt up i tryed to just get a re- fund but let them talk me into one more it was made very clear i would not spend another 50 doolors to re-turn the piece of junk and was told by RICKY DONT WORRIE WE WANT YOU TO BE PLEASED I HAVE USED IT NOW AROUND 6 TIMES SO FAR THE MOTOR HAS NOT BURNED OUT but i now have a nother 200 dollor charge because i did not re-turn the other piece of trash i was not allowed to speak with a supervisor and was told I'M SORRY WE WILL BE TAKING THE MONEY NO MATTER WHAT i have notified my bank that the charge was not autherized and i will press charges for this teft i hope to get them put out of business so no one will have to go through this i have a disabled daughter and husband i take care of with very little help from anyone and this is just shamefull for someone to take advantage of consumers like this . i will keep you all posgted on how this turns out and try to keep others safe from them
Thank you so much for all the comments. My Eden Pure just broke, after several years (sounds like it had the same plastic piece as the Garry that broke). Anyway, I was ready to order a Garry based on the infomercial, and I am SO GLAD I checked here first. You have saved me tremendous aggravation and frustration! Thank you all.
We fell for the informercial also. My wife ordered a Garry at the end of Nov 09 and it lasted about 2 days. They sent us another and we sent the 1st one back. The 2nd one lasted as long. We sent that one back and told them to reimburse us. They were very easy to work with and said that tthey would reimburse our credit card. All was good until we received our next credit card bill and seen that they had taken another payment. This happened 2 times more where they said they will reimburse everthing and then having more charged. My wife did the dealing before, its my turn now, along with my credit card company. Do Not Buy A Garry
I also fell for the informercial for the Garry Vacuum, but after reading the comments from this web site I called within a half hour of purchasing the vacuum to cancel my order. Thank you for all the comments. When you have a feeling that and offer is to good to be true it usually is. I will stick with my Oreck! Thanks.
I have to be honest- I loved my Garry vac. Although I do have much more tile than carpet- Me and my mom both bought one together in one order. We were very pleased with how they worked BUT they both broke. Her's in 4 months mine in 6!!! Motor just burned up- I KNOW I didnt vacuum anything up because I was using the attachment at the time on dust and then a big noise and now it's done for. I am so mad because I liked it a lot. I am considering paying the $50 for another just because I want one right away and have bought other more known names in the $60 range and had it also break. UGGGHHH So mad!! Can't believe they compare this to the Dyson- wish it worked better. And the steam mop is garbage.
Do not buy!!!!! I am on my third vacuum in three months. They will not refund my money, only ship a new vacuum. The first two broke the first time I used it.
If you are thinking about buying a Garry vac, DON'T! This was the first time I spent more than $50 for a vac - it isn't even worth that! After only 4 month the impellar, which is plastic, broke. I was told the same as everyone else above - ship back the vac and get charged $50 for them to replace it with a refurbished one! Hah! What a scam! I wish I would have read these comments before I bought one.
I fell for this piece of garbage as well. I am on my 3rd one and the belt burned up before the motor this time. I have had it less than 3 weeks and I made them conver shipping back on the second unit. I was told if this one breaks, I would get my money back-guess what I am calling again today. Note, all TV products make all their money on the shipping and handling.
Thanks for the heads up I think that Iwill buy another Sears Kenmore canister.I was just going to buy a Garry but I thought that I would google it first to see what the reviewa aaid sorry that all of you are stuck with a piece of junk but thanks again for saving me.Even though I hate Sears I think that it would be better than the Garry.
I am so unhappy with the Garry vaccuum. My first one worked fine until the motor burned out. Got a replacement for $50 s&H and had to pay $18 to send old one back. The replacement worked for a few weeks and I had big chunks of white plastic falling out of the vaccuum. Decided not to send it back as it would cost me another $50 to get a replacment plus another $18 to ship replacement back.
Not worth the money. Bought a Hoover windtunnel that works just great.
This vacuum is a piece of crap-DO NOT BUY!!! I had mine less than a year and had major problems with it. The customer service is customer NO service and they will not let you speak with someone in the US but will be happy to charge you and arm and leg to send this vacuum back and then you also have to pay shipping on the one that is broken-or you are charged full price for the replacement!!! I have learned my lessons.
I purchased a Garry Vac. Then it broke, then I returned it. They did not charge me shipping and handling to return it. They sent me the new one. This was back in April. Now its june and I was charged $200 for a non returned vaccum. I called them, they told me to fax over the copy of the Certificate of mailing which i did. They said they would refund me my money. This was on June 8th.. They told me 3 to 5 bussiness days. Well guess what.. no refund was issued. I called them and they told me the refund was issued and it would take 24 to 48 hours. That was 2 days ago... I just called them and the refund wasnt issued till yesterday the 16th. When I asked them for the corporate number they told me that they could not give it to me but they could give me the address.. Dont know if this address is correct. But its PO Box 9169 venice ca 91409. I will be writing to them and will be finiding anumber for them.. I will be reporting them to bbb. I love the vaccum but the customers service associates suck. they are rude and half of them dont speak that good of english.. and the ones that do dont even know what you are saying. because they dont understand.... The vaccum is great.. but i would not recommend buying it..
I purchased a Garry Vaccuum after hearing the infomercial on TV. I didn't want to spend the money on a Dyson if the Garry was just as good. My advice to anyone thinking about purchasing a Garry Vaccuum.....DO NOT DO IT!!! We have had it one year and of that one year used it MAYBE 8 months and the motor FELL apart!!! Upon calling Garry to have the vaccuum fixed I was told that I had to give them my credit card number and that a $50. charge would be assessed for the return of the vaccuum. Then upon getting the refurbished vaccuum in the mail I would have to enclose the old vaccuum and then ship it back to them at my own cost and within the 30 days or I would be charged $150. Oh and I had to call them back with the tracking number of the vaccuum! STAY CLEAR OF THIS COMPANY!!!!! Not worth the problems. No different then any other vaccuum you can purchase at your local store for WAY less! Thank you...hope this helps!
DONT DO IT! Customer service is a nightmare. Took over three months to get reimbursement. Took hours of writing and calling. Save your money and go with a company that has better customer service. Thisis a product that no one stands behind...
PIECE OF TRASH!!!!! after reading all the comments I can agree that the Garry company is a rip off- the replacement machine they sent me (after I paid $20 shipping) has broken also and now they want $50 shipping and I have to pay shipping from my end too!!! The service people that answer the phones are all foreign and very hard to understand-also they could care less if the customer is satisfied- I will not be bothering to send this machine back as I don't even want a replacement from this company- BUYER BEWARE is a good saying for people dealing with a company like this.
I bought this vacuum for $259 (with s/h) just over a year ago (2 July 2009). While doing some regular, no-stress (on the vacuum that is) vacuuming about a week ago the motor died. I called the customer support to get the name of a local company that is authorized to work on the vacuum. They don't have authorized repair centers! That should tell you something. They said the only way to get it fixed is to get a replacement vacuum mailed to me (a $50 s/h fee) and then ship the old one back within 30 days (another fee - could be less than $50 though as they said I can pick my own shipping method (the rep was very quick in mentioning this). Figure at least $25). So, there's another $75 for a vacuum that the company brags is 'the best vacuum for under $300.' Moreover, if they don't receive my old vacuum within 30 days they'll charge my card the price of a new vacuum. What's to say they just claim they didn't receive it? So that would mean I'd have to send it registered with receipt requested. Now the $25 simple shipping is going up to near $40. I also suspect that their new replacement vacuum would burn out in just over a year. I figured that it all boils down to: How long do I want to play their game and is the vacuum really worth this? So I told the rep that I'm going to cut my loses and buy a new vacuum from a reputable company. Now get this! He says: 'Well, if you don't want to pay the s/h for a replacement, you can buy a new vacuum from us and we'll give you a discount.' I'm not kidding. And again, he said it without much thought. Which means they've heard these comments before and they have a canned reply. But that's a pretty stupid one, I think. Why would anyone want to buy another vacuum from a company that they just claimed was not on the up-and-up?! Bob might be able to sell a freezer to an Eskimo --- but he's telling his reps to say some pretty stupid things.
Bottom line: STAY AWAY FROM THIS VACUUM. Even if you get one that works for 20 years you'll be left wanting for something with more pickup power and one that can pickup in corners and along edges better.
I know you might be thinking that my review, and those before me are just a small sampling of the total number of customers.
And taking that into consideration the vacuum doesn't look all that bad. But you should remember that the best gauge of a company is the way it deals with the customers who experience problems. After all, it's a 50-50 chance that the one you get will brake down (actually, with this vacuum it's more like a 60% or higher chance that you'll have problems). In which case, you'll be the one writing the next negative review. Oh! Not to mention the $259 you've wasted on the first vacuum, then another $100 on s/h for the replacement, then another $100 for a replacement, ...in quod in! And let's just hope they receive the broken vacuum(s) that you send back.
Cheers.
The Garry Vacuum is a total scam. This cheap plastic vacuum is made in China, and if someone offered it to me for $20 I would not buy it. The so called company does not really exist. They operate from PO Boxes and their company or LLC is in the state of Delaware. Delaware does not give out information on these LLC's to the public. The owner of the company could be Chinese. They use a company called Paracorp to handle their law suites and to communicate with the government in Delaware. They use SPExpress in Rancho Cucamonga, CA to import and distribute this junk. This is a scam. Do not give these scammers your credit card number. They will charge whatever they want, and you will have to fight your credit card company to dispute the charges, and that is not easy.
Thanks to all of you who took the time to write a review. You have saved many of us a lot of money and frustration!!
Is there some way you can all get together and file a class action lawsuit against these thieves? I have scoured the internet and have not found one good review on this vacuum (other than on their own website). I also can't figure out where these are made as the address is a P.O. Box in California and the holding company is Environ, LLC., also in California. Where are these actually made?
Someone out there needs to get with an attorney and get a lawsuit going before more good honest hard-working Americans have to suffer. What good is the Better Business Bureau if they can't stop Americans from being taken advantage of by overseas companies hiding behind a California P.O. Box? When are we going to say "enough is enough"?!
I saw the infoomerical and purchased the Garry Vac and I have had it for three months and yesterday I went to vacuum and when I turned it on, a loud high pitched squeeling sound came from the motor and had a buring smell. I contacted Garry Vac via customer service e-mail and told them the problem and when they answered me back I was told to check the bag, make sure it is not plugged up. I wish I would have checked this web site before I purchased one. I will not be sending this back or purchasing another one. Also it does not what the infomercial says it does, very unhappy with this vac, how can they advertise on T.V. that something that works so good and then when you get it it does not work like they say. Also I had the payments coming out of my bank and then I recieved an nasty letter from Garry Vac saying that I did not pay a payment and I had to go to my bank get a copy of where the money was taken out and sent to Garry Vac, I had to fax a copy of my bank statemt to them to prove it and was told later by some individual that they system needs to be updated. VERY DISSATISFIED WITH THE PRODUCT AND COMPANY

So if anyone does a class lawsuit against the Garry Vacuum, count me in!
A class action needs to happen with this vacuum. I bought one and it has seized up, I am to busy to deal with getting a replacement, especially at the cost of 50 bucks.
I was ready to buy one. Thanks for the review change my mind. I'll probably buy a brand name.
Oh how I wished that these posts were available (or better yet - that I had done my homework and Googled these crooks) back in June 2009 when I was suckered into buying two of these pieces of junk. Everything that has been reported above is absolutely true. Customer no-service based in India. Rude telephone reps. Huge overcharge for "shipping and processing." plus to add insult to injury, you have to pay to ship the defective unit back within 30 days or risk being charged another $200.00. I haven't read of anyone being charged even though they returned the defective product, so I guess at least they are attempting to avoid felony charges for grand theft and wire fraud. However, in my opinion, just by being in business and treating their customers as they have is criminal. BTW, the part that failed on my unit was the internal air/suction turbine. It shattered after picking up a small pebble. This piece (probably the one item that receives the most abuse during operation) was manufactured out of a plastic resin from China. Not intended to be used for this purpose at all. This part is made from steel or aluminuim on most other brands. It probably costs $1.50 more to make it out of metal, so Garry surely won't be doing that; not when they can make another $50.00 off you for their ridiculous return fee. Sorry - went way too long but I just had to vent to someone. Bottom line - DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!!!!!!!

Yes thank you all for the comments. I was on the phone with the reps giving him my information for the purchase of the Garry vac when I started to read these comments. I had to quickly hang up the phone because I notice they were trying to rush me into buying without answering all my questions.
DO NOT BUY! I've been reading the above comments and they are so true. After a few months the motor burned up on my Garry. Finding that it will cost $100 to ship back/get a new one I'm just going to run to the nearest discount store and buy one which will be just as good for about $60.
I called today to cancel the automatic bag deliveries (they are not free, they charge you $10 for four) and the guy in India, who I could barely understand, hung up on me. No, I was not rude. I asked a question ......... guess one detail was his limit.
Bad, bad, disreputable company!
We have had the Garry Vacuum for a few months and I've got nothing but good things to say about it so far. It works as advertised, for the most part (sometimes especially dirty section require a twice-over). The cost is what finally pushed me over the edge to buy. It costs so much less than other uprights.
I purchased one several months ago. Within 1 mo. something broke in the unit. When I started the vacuum it was extremely loud and there was a lot of vibration. I made the mistake of thinking the claim of a lifetime warranty was a good deal. I first talked to Paul, from a call center in India, who informed me that all I had to do was pay $50 for shipping and processing. He stated that shipping for the broken unit was also included in this charge and that a return label would be included with the new unit. Of course when I received the replacement ..... no return label. I then talked to David, also from a call center in India, who informed me that I "was mistaken" and that I had to pay to ship the unit back to the manufacturer. In the end, my lifetime warranty cost me $75 to get a new unit priced at below $150.
I have never seen this site before, just happened to come upon it and another one that no one had anything good to say about this vacuum. I will book mark this site for future references.
Thank you so much for all of the reviews. I was getting very serious about ordering this vacuum. I don't understand how a company that delivers an item, breaks in a short period of time can charge to send back for replacement and charge for the shipping? Very bad way to do business. Penalize the consumer for a product that needs to be refunded or replaced? it makes no good sense!

Much to my chagrin, I did not think to contact consumer reports before purchasing my Garry. Although I am not totally dissatisfied with it yet, it is not at light or does it do as good a job as it purports to do. I am waiting now about 3 weeks for replacement bags. I complained to them that it only came with one bag. They did reduce the price of shipping the bags for me, though. After reading these reviews, I agree that it is very loud, and I am now waiting for the motor to burn out. As a widow puttin 2 kids through college, I will not be able to afford all the shipping associated with returning the old and receiving the new vacuum. I am just past my 30 days, but I want to return the product and get my money back. Is anyone interested in starting a class action suite against them for misrepresenting the product?
I HAVE 2 GARY VACUUMS. nETHER LASTED FOR 1 YEAR. wHEN WE TURNED THE CONTROL TO SELECT THE ATTACHMENT HOSE THERE WAS A LOUD CLUNK AND THE MOTER SMELLS LIKE IT IS BURNING DUE TO BEING FROZEN. i HAVE BEEN TRYING TO REACH THE COMPANY AT THERE TOLL FREE NUMBER UNSUCESSFULLY. I GOT THROUGH 1 TIME AND WAS TOLD THAT THEIR COMPUTER WAS DOWN, CALL BACK IN 30 MIN. WHEN I CALLED BACK NO ONE WOULD ANSWER. THE PHONE NOW HAS A MESSAGE THAT SAYS CALL BACK LATER. THIS MACHINE IS A PIECE OF JUNK AND I CAN'T GET HOLD OF THE COMPANY!!!!
I purchased a Garry in June and guess what? The motor was really loud and smelled like burning rubber and wow it don't work. I believe that has been most of the problem with everyone else. I wish I would have found this blog before I purchased it. I have had an ORECK for 10 years or more and it is still works. I would recommend ORECK to anyone. I ordered the Garry because I thought the onboard attachments would be nice. When my Garry "blew up" I called customer service and was hung up on once, so I called again and talked to someone else and was put on hold for a long time and then they said it would be $50 to ship another one (maybe refurbished) and I would have to pay to have the one that is broke back to them at $50??? go figure. I'm not spending more money on a piece of JUNK!!!!!!!DO NOT BUY A GARRY!!!!!!!!!!!
I will not buy another garry vaccuum. Some of the problems I have read have occurred with mine after I ordered the extra bags...what a waste of money...now will go to my local vaccuum cleaner store and have to buy one that works and they can work on it if anything goes wrong and I will not be charged for shipping..what a big rip off right before the holidays.
