I read that Consumer Reports was doing research on the STEAM floor cleaners... ie Shark, Haan, or Bissell - and thought the article said to look for it in June/July of 2009. I am very sad to not be able to find ANY information. When I originally purchased a subscription to this website... you got access to everthing.. now? I fell I am being nickled & dimed to death! The idea that I have to purchase for motorized scooter information... by joining health consumer org?... This is not drugs... or hospital information... THIS IS TRANSPORTATION.. like a bike.. or a car... would be! I feel this website is starting to go downhill! In this day and age... of an economy slide... it would be nice to count on Consumer Reports... for the reliable source it was years ago.. and not this new attitude of squeezing every penny out of your subscribers!

I agree with the comments about steam mops. We purchased an early model and were pleased with its cleaning results. Unfortunately, it was somewhat flimsy, and failed after about a year. Now I'm looking for reviews & recommendations in order to make a more-informed choice. No help here at Consumer Reports - disappointing.

regarding the above steam cleaner comments, I agree with them as I am considering one for my wife for Christmas (her wish). Would like to know if a report is forthcoming or is this being ignored as 'seen on tv' stuff, or not considered at all. I'm interested in steam cleaners and would appreciate product tested reviews by an idependent consumer product testing organization- that's you. I'm leery of internet product reviews. I am a subscriber for over 25 years. I have refered to your ratings for a wide range of purchases over the years. I am very disappointed that you have not researched these products as of yet. Since I'm considering purchasing a quality steamer, it's a costly investment of several hundred dollars. I'm not sure if it's actually worth the extra money, especially if they break down quickly and need costly repairs. Perhaps, I should be considering a high end model for better satisfaction, but I'm not sure they're worth it either? They cost a thousand and more. Green cleaning is the way to go. So, why not consider rating steam cleaners? With the holidays a month away, many more consumers will be searching for your recommendations.

Many months ago I wrote concerning steam mops. I received a reply from you stating you would be doing a steam mop comparison with recommendations in June 2009. I was specifically interested in the recommendation (or not) for laminated wood floors. I am still looking and waiting.

I am waiting for steam mops too ! Shark, Haan, bissell, Eureka, Kenmore etc. I've been checking for months - waiting for a review. And I can't believe there hasn't been a response back from consumer reports - letting us know an update. I'm the 28th commenter in the month of October alone. Steam mops...I too am interesting in getting one and want to know if their are worth the money. The tv commericals makes them look great but will they damage your hardwood and porcelain floors after a time??

I have been waiting months for floor steamer reviews & have been disappointed with Consumer Reports as well. I have been a subscriber online and the magazine for years, and recently I have noticed that CR is trying to make money from other publications, branching out in to other areas. Since the economy isn't good, I have canceled all of my magazine subscriptions, except for CR.
The reason I have been disheartened is that while CR has been focusing on branching out in to other areas to make more money, the quality has gone down and is spread so thin that it cannot deliver the same quality as it used to. I have learned of other review sites for electronics, general and household items, since I find the organization not to be quite as reliable.

Where are the steam mop reviews. It seems CR concentrates on large appliances (washers,dryers, etc) cars and electronics now. Have become disillusioned with CR after being subscribers for at least 30 years.

I was specifically wondering about a more-affordable steam mop, the Lysol Conair Steam Cleaning Mop, which is about $35-$40 as far as I can tell.

This blog only shows complaints since October, 2009. Folks, you should know that in 2008 I started looking on CR.com for reviews on steam mops and there were many complaints even then. It's a year later and STILL no reviews, and not even a posting about WHEN CR intends to review? Yet the vacuum ratings are constantly updated....what gives? These blog comments are reviewed by a CR moderator before they appear, so CR is well aware of our requests and complaints. I have been a subscriber since 1972 and I never, ever thought CR would be so unresponsive to its subscribers. It's very disappointing and I am on the verge of cancelling after all these years. We too have subscribed to the magazine for some years and am quite disappointed there is nothing about the steam mops. I really want my husband to get me one for Christmas because he got something three or four years ago and I ended up returning it because it didn't lift the dirt out of the indentations in the laminate flooring we have. I guess I'll have to pick one and hope for the best. Two straight months of requests from loyal customers mean nothing to you folks? What a disappointment.

I agree with the others regarding Steam Mops (need some testing done by CR). The Shark Steam mop is advertised on TV for about $100.00 and as with most high priced advertising they make their product look like its the best out there. I know there's others such as Bissel, Hahn, etc. Im finding a variety of results on other websites.......need some tests done by CR followed by the results.

I join the all those before me as a disappointed subscriber. These steam mops have been out for a couple of years and no reviews. People have been screaming for months to no avail. (We ended up just calling our local carpet company to come in and clean the kitchen floor. For the price we're paying them I could have bought a steam cleaner. As all of you, I am sorely disappointed there are no steam mops so I have had to do my own research (limited to what is available here in town). "SteamFast" - don't bother. The cloth head is not attached well and rolls under as you go across the floor. Also left a dullness to all my floors.
"Shark" - better. Cloth head goes all the way around so doesn't roll or bunch up. Doesn't leave a dullness to the floors but they aren't shiny either. You can slide in your socks, however. Draw back that I can't get over - no on/off switch. You have to physically unplug it! Really, what if the doorbell rings of something or you just aren't near your plug in??
"Wagner Multi-Use Steam Cleaner" - so-so. Better on floors that the "SteamFast" but not as good as the "Shark". Promises to other cleaning besides floors - not impressed. Dirt doesn't just melt off, you then have to go back and wipe it down. I do like the brush attachment and steam on demand features.
Overall - there are no short cuts in life. Steam cleaning is just to good to be true. And, most importantly, if you have REAL hardwood floors I would recommend no steam cleaning at all. Thankfully my floors were already in bad condition and I tried the cleaners before getting them refinished.

Trying to find steam mop ratings to clean up from the holidays. I heard Eureka Enviro Steamer was good & affordable. But, one person says never use it on hardwood. Another says perfectly fine.............Nothing here on that model or any other. HELP?!?!

DITTO the above. I bought a Shark steam mop yesterday to clean true wood floors in my kitchen, dinning room and entry way as well as bathroom linoleum. Costco has a $15 coupon which expires soon. Knowing CU's take on steam mops in general and the Shark in particular would be a great help.

I have also been checking in repeatedly to find reviews of steam mops, and still it is not available. What is the timeline for the release of your results? There is not that many models out there, what is taken you so long when there is obviously a demand for this review? Please let us know when we will see the results, thank you!

I subscribed to this site just to see about which steam mop to buy. HOw long do they have to be on market for you to test them? People need to know if these things work. They are a investment for consumers. Put it in second gear for cryin outloud and get it on the site.

I purchased the Bissell Steam Mop and used it on my hardwood floor in my kitchen. Very disappointed in the results! It left a film on the floor and took away the "shine". I consulted the Bissell rep and he said I may have used too much steam, but I used it in an area without any steam and got the same results. I only clean my hardwood with a water and vinegar solution, so I don't know where there would be any buildup. Guess I will return the mop as I initially wanted it to clean my floor, but the results were awful! Hope this helps someone on making a decision on purchasing a mop in the future--not sure what it does on tile and the like.

I thought it was just me not being able to find the site correctly on "STEAM MOP RATINGS". Wonder why CR doesn't even post an answer as to why there are no ratings for steam mops.
I mean you guys rate everything!. Which is what we have come to rely on, instead of all the false advertiseing out there. Who wants to make an $80. mistake, by not being informed. hopefuly you get it together. They are getting popular!

I just joined Consumer Reports for a year because I've been thinking about getting a steam mop and I don't know anyone personally that has bought one yet. They are advertised as not only the best cleaners, but the best germ killers too. I was so surprised and disappointed that I couldn't find any comparisons of models on here, only a little blurb about a particular brand that caused some burns and had some wiring problems. Please, please, please do some testing and post it ASAP. It looks like you have many requests to do so (almost daily) and as far back as October! I thought Consumer Reports covered everything! Please contact me ASAP when you get this to let me know if you will be reviewing these steam mops in the near future, and if not, I will be requesting a refund.

Well, It is now February and still no reviews of steam mops. I cannot believe that after months and months of comments and requests that something as simple to test as a mop has not made the cut.

How incredibly disappointing not to find the shark steam mop reviewed! I have seen that stupid infomercial fo about a year and a half. Saw the product yesterday and said to myself "I better check with Consumer Reports first to see if this product actually works." Well, Surprise! NO RATINGS OR INFO!! What a waste of time! HAHA!

I also joined this site to get information on steam mops. I found no ratings and would like these mops tested.

Well here we are Feb.2010. I know you are very busy at cr, so I went and purchased a steam mop in Nov. Tried to do some research before hand. Needless to say I don't like it at all, hard to use, and takes a long time to clean large area. The cost was around $80. I'm out the money and will try another kind of mop. I'll wait a few months and try to talk to as many people as possible, to see if other mops are any better. Maybe at CR you can try some out before many other people are out of their hard earned money.

Steam mop cleaners are wanted because of the trend for hard fooring instead of carpet. A review is long overdue.

It looks like I am one of many looking for the best steam mop or if it is even a good idea. When can we expect an answer?

Ditto, ditto, ditto. . . Please review the handheld steam cleaners along with the steam mops, too. There seems to be no standard metric for comparison, and prices vary from $40 to $1200. C'mon CU, this is just what you folks do best!

I THOUGHT I did all my research on steam mops and finally decided on the Shark Pocket steam mop. Bought it, used it twice and hated it! Steam doesn't get hot enough enough to really clean well, have to keep "pumping" the handle to get steam, but worst thing is it is SO HARD TO PUSH!!! I was exhausted just a quarter of the way being done with my small kitchen floor... Luckily, Target said they will take this thing back...

so I come here as a last resort, finally remembering about Consumer Reports! BUT... there is nothing here about steam mops!!!! PLEASE!!! I really need information on this. I have health problems and need something that works and does not take mega-muscles to use...

Wow! It's been 3 months since your posted update and STILL NO STEAM MOP REVIEW!!!! We've used CR for everything from cars to cameras to washer/dryer to televisions to vacuums. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!!!!!!!

I just renewed my online subscription and the first thing I looked for was reviews of the floor steam cleaners. I now have hardwook floors thoughout and can't find any reviews???? Definitely NOT happy!!

I too would have liked to see an unbiased Consumer Reports review. However I was able to find a review of some of the top sellers:

Go to Amazon. Search for Eureka 313a steam mop. Look at the "Most Helpful Review". This guy did an in-depth review of the top sellers and listed all their pros and cons and features like tank size, water temp, cord length.

I see I am not the only one looking on info on a steam mop! I can't believe these have not yet been rated! I will tell anyone reading this that I had a Bissel, loved it but it only lasted a year or less. It no longer heats or displaces water. So for over $100.00 I rate this as a poor choice. I would really like to buy another for my tile but don't know which one to try next. I buy 90% of everything based on Consumer Reports recomendations. Please help all of us!! I too am waiting for information on steam floor cleaners. I can't believe you haven't done a study on these yet. I see that you have left a message noting CR's intent to do a study on these machines. So, I will continue to wait. I subscribed to CR so I could find out about just this type of thing. Hope to see some information soon.

I have been waiting a year since my wife has been wanting one for a few years. I told her to wait since the results should be in soon. Perhaps it is time to get the results out? Surely it is fairly quick to test a steam mop compared to vehicles, and paints? Appreciate your other reviews but anxiously waiting.
