Inside Consumer Reports Test Labs: Putting carpet shampooers through their paces
November 6, 2009 12:01 AM
Consumer Reports Review Carpet shampooersLast week we told you about a scary-looking tool our technicians are experimenting with to embed pet hair into carpeting as part of vacuum testing. This week, for our scheduled March 2010 report on carpet cleaners (online and on newsstands in early February), other testers have been using a big roller that grinds topsoil into panels of off-white carpeting. This device is designed to replicate the abuse the carpeting in your home might be subjected to by a gaggle of dirty-sneaker-wearing kids.

The testers let the dirt set for 24 hours then vacuum the panels with a conventional upright vacuum. Next, they use a carpet cleaner (shown) filled with the manufacturer-recommended solution. To determine how well each appliance cleans the carpeting, testers use a colorimeter to measure the color change from the cleaning process.

Known by a variety of names—carpet shampooers, extractors, carpet cleaners, deep cleaners—the 11 different machines we're testing include a rental model and two handhelds. Among the messes these cleaners have to tackle in the lab are coffee, red wine, and tomato sauce. And since wet carpeting can develop mold or mildew, testers also weigh the panels before and after each test to find out how much moisture remains. Beyond that type of quantitative analysis, testers also look at how convenient each machine is to use and which features matter most.

We're aware that many of you are deeply interested in carpet cleaners, so we'll continue to update you on our testing.—Kimberly Janeway | | Twitter | Forums | Facebook

Where are your carpet cleaner reviews and recommendations? Are they not available to online subscribers such as myself?

Testing takes several months. We're scheduled to report our test findings online, and in the March issue of Consumer Reports, in early February 2010.

Are you testing/reviewing carpet cleaning services such as ChemDry in addition to wet cleaning methods?

I think what Mr. Wiggins was asking is why the current carpet cleaner ratings aren't accessible online to us online subscribers? My subscription is good until April 2010, yet I cannot access the ratings. I get rerouted to a subscription page, which I don't need.

My question is the same as theirs -- why aren't the previous carpet cleaner ratings viewable online to online subscribers??

Looking for reviews for carpet shampooer/extractors.

Can't find any

My question also........we always used to have access to reviews online, no matter how old they were or that you were in the middle of doing new ones. How long can we access reviews? My subscription depends on being able to find info on everything at all times. HELP!

Like the people commenting before me I cannot find any reviews on carpet shampooers. I paid my fee for the sole purpose of getting information on these items and I now feel that my money has been taken under false pretenses. I am very disapointed

I have been a subscriber for several years, and even though, I don't use it that often, I have maintained my subscription with the expectation that when I do need information on products, it will be available. I am looking to purchase a carpet shampooer and I am very frustrated that I was not able to access any information/ratings about these products on line.

I agree with all above. I paid my fee tonight to find ratings for carpet cleaners. I am going to cancel ASAP?

Had I known I could not review carpet steam machines or other household appliances, I would not have subscribed to this online service. Never again.

Could use a review for carpet shampooers today, not March 2010.

i want to purchase a foam carpet cleaner for a Christmas gift. why no info?

I am disappointed that the previous report on carpet shampooers is not available online for paid subscribers to access. Even a one or two year old assessment is better than nothing and should be available online until the current analysis in completed and uploaded.

Like other commentors, I am also disappointed not to have found any ratings on carpet cleaners. I have only turned to Consumer Reports on very few occasions in the past and very regrettably each time (!!) have been disappointed! This has certainly not been worth the subscription! I have not been looking for a rare appliance either! I imagine carpet cleaenrs are of interest to many!

same problem here. where are my ratings? Even if old it is better than nothing. I have found this non ratings goes on for alot of products. I WILL NOT RENEW

I see you still have not fixed that problem. I would prefer to have older reviews available than none. Does that happen with other reviews, too. Won't renew subscribtion unless a rating shows up soon.

I specifically purchased a subscription to Consumer Report to get reviews on carpet cleaners. Not worth the subscription price if you can cannot get any information whatsoever.

I concur. I typed steam cleaner, well I don't know how many different ways into the search engine. I thought I was crazy. Only generic buying guides, no ratings ... which is what I am paying for. I too have been a long time customer becuase of the instant accessiblity to All ratings at All times. BRING THE THE RATINGS BACK!

I would have thought that you would have reviewed carpet cleaners some time in the past and had the reviews available on-line! You review vacuums, TV's, computers regularly, why not branch out and review other useful tools occasionally??

I'm looking for reports on carpet cleaners and carpet cleaning solutions. I'm not sure if the online account is worth the purchase over the Consumer Reports magazine. I am considering not renewing my account online. Please advise.

What is going on here!!! Where the heck are the reviews on carpet cleaners. I keep getting redirected to subscribe to consumer reports and I already a subsriber. Who do you report consumers reports to for failure to provide service!!!

Rip off!!!

I really don't have a use for this subscription if I can't find the ratings for carpet steam cleaners... Even old ratings? C'mon guys... This is bad business.

I agree with the others, if I cannot review the ratings online no matter how old they are I will not be renewing my subscription. That is the only reason I have it to be able to see the ratings before I purchase an item.

this is very unprofessional of consumer reports to not have whatever the most current reviews are of carpet shampooers -- this is why I joined and I need to get a machine soon and I am mad cause I need the info!!!

I too am looking for the last ratings of carpet extractors/steamers. They used to have them available to online subscribers, but I can't find them now!!??? Whats up with that? I think all past test reports should be available to us online subscribers!! I also get and save the magazine, but online searching is so much more convenient! Come on CR give us access, please!!

PS To Becky! I too am shopping now and need a new machine soon! This really frustrates me! Sure new test results are welcome, but give us access to the old ones too! They also offer great buying advice along with CU recommended etc. We need information today, not next March!! Thank you.

The only reason I renewed my subscription was to shop for a carpet cleaner for my mother. What a waste of $20.

Hey! This isn't like Consumer Reports to not have available info on a major purchase! I see it is coming in Feb - but what about all of us above that need it now. The old report would be fine.
Also, your website has not been the easiest to navigate in the past, but it is 10x worse now as every third window is a request for subscription. I'm a subscriber already! Get you data paths and permissions set up correctly! Thanks for you work - we count on your fine quality info so this is disappointing. Susan

It's not just carpet cleaning machines! I pay for a magazine subscription AND an online subscription and I am almost NEVER able to access anything I'm searching for online here. I'm better off going into my back copies (I keep 'em for 2 years) than I am paying twice for a single service.

Haven't your webmasters ever heard of "archiving?"

Really, one of the poorest websites for info access I've encountered; the poorest by far that I have to PAY for.

I just subscribed 5 minutes ago. I'll be un-subscribing in the next 5 minutes. I wish I could have seen these comments before I subscribed. Consumer Reports! Of all places to treated in this fashion. The money of course concerns me, but I'm genuinely saddened and disappointed by this development. I'm not certain, but I'm guessing they won't be reporting on their own shoddy treatment of consumers.

Its now April 4th. Where are the ratings promised for February 2010?

To day is April 18,2010.
Coes anyone know where the carpet shampooer's review is?
I have always used CR befor purchasing. I have been a member for several years and have never seen anything like this.

Maybe I need to look again??

I have not been on my consumer report in awhile and now I am interested in buying a carpet shampooer and I cant find out any information. I have been paying all this time and when I need it , I can't use it ! I need it now not later so I guess I will be cancelling my subscrioption!!!!

This is not the first time I've had this issue with CR online. The cost is not justified when I can just look it up in my hard copy archives. Judging my all the complaints and no resolutions, maybe it's time for an independent publication to rate Consumer Reports on such things as responding to customer complaints and delivering on their promises. It's beginning to look like one of those ripoffs I used to turn to CU to avoid.

It is now July 2010 and still no info on carpet shampooers???????????

I am also a subscriber. Where did you say the carpet shampooer reviews were located ???

WOW! after reading all the reviews and seeing that they mostly say the same thing I wonder why C.G. is'nt improving or do they even look at these comments I too am looking to buy a carpet shampooer/steam vac and was depending on this site for info, boy amI disapointed

I thought it was just me when I couldn't find anything on carpet cleaners/shampooers. Amazingly, it seems to frustrate a lot of Consumer Reports customers. This is a fairly high ticket item (over $400 for some), now I'll need to bite the bullet and just take a chance by buying a familiar brand like Bissell or Hoover. That's not the support I expected from CR!
A lot of items get tested over and over, and others are of marginal importance, yet get tested. How about testing carpet cleaners? We don't all rent ours from grocery stores!

So, where are the reviews?

Where are your ratings on carpet shampooers. According to your comments they were tested in March of 2010 and you still don't have the results? I am very disappointed with CR. What's happening?
