Qualifying Words: To get cash for clunkers rebates, buy Energy Star-qualified appliances
December 15, 2009 3:03 PM
Energy Star Cash for ClunkersWhile we've reported on some issues with the federal Energy Star program and certain aspects of the appliance industry's energy-use testing, Energy Star qualification usually provides you with some assurance that a refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, or other appliance is among the most energy-efficient products in its category.

What's more, to take advantage of the $300 million State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program, aka cash for clunkers for appliances, you need to buy appliances that are at least Energy Star qualified. You can determine whether a product qualifies for Energy Star by checking its specifications on the manufacturer's Web site, looking for the Energy Star logo on the EnergyGuide label, or finding the model on the list of qualified models in a category on EnergyStar.gov, like this one for refrigerators.

(December 29, 2009, update: Check out our cash for clunkers for appliances hub, which includes a U.S. map with links to each state's clunkers Web page.)

But with some products, some of the energy-use information can be confusing.

For one side-by-side refrigerator we've tested, for instance, the manufacturer indicates that the fridge "Meets strict Department of Energy requirements—uses less energy than a 100-watt light bulb." (The same wording is used for one of the manufacturer's Energy Star-qualified models.) The statement is accurate but might also imply that this side-by-side is Energy Star qualified. It's not. (See our continuously updated ratings of refrigerators, available to subscribers.)

Another brand indicates that one of its top-loading washing machines uses 32 percent less water and 48 percent less energy than top-loaders made before 2004. Sounds great, and it might lead you to conclude that this model will get you a cash for clunkers for appliances rebate. But since this washer is not Energy Star qualified—correctly indicated on the model's specifications page—it's not covered by the rebate program.

So remember, if you plan to take advantage of cash for clunkers for appliances when the program rolls out in your state, verify that appliances you're considering are Energy Star qualified so they get you the rebate you're aiming for.

As a member, I am disappointed that it has been so
difficult to obtain the information I've requested.

The ratings on Citrus Juicers and Juice extractors,
not carpet cleaners or other ratings.

Thanks,

Ron

why doesn't CR show Energy Star ratings on its recommendations for dishwashers?

I'm a new subscriber. Joined primarily because I'm planning to purchase a new hot water heater. Am very disappointed to not find any product ratings at all. There are some article which have been somewhat helpful, but nothing like I was expecting to find giving the ratings, product comparisons, product recommendations, and best buy information. Am I missing something?

I am looking for info on hand held steam cleaners like the shark hand held or floor cleaner-have you ever tested them?

Reviewing refrigerators, I see so many more horrible reviews than good reviews for ALL manufacturers, I'm thinking of getting an icebox instead! I don't want to shell out over $1,200 for a LG, Whirlpool, Samsung, or other model which is just going to go kaput and force me to buy an extended warranty and waste my time with a runaround for service from either the mfr or retailer.

Isn't it possible to buy a reliable refrigerator anymore? I guess not! I'm just not going to buy until mine goes, then I'm buying the cheapest one I can find so when it breaks down within the first two years I won't feel like I've wasted QUITE as much money. This is ridiculous.

What are the dates for this program " Cash for Appliances" ? When does it start/end?
Thank you.
