Is there a better way to slice a bagel?
December 1, 2009 12:03 PM
Americans have a fondness for bagels, but it turns out that these rotund breads of Eastern European origin can be a problem in th kitchen, and not just if you have a tough time resisting a carb-laden, high-calorie nosh.

A recent article in The Wall Street Journal on bagel-slicing devices noted that "In 2008 . . . 1,979 people appeared in ERs with a [bagel-related injury]. Chicken-related injuries (3,463) led the category, but recorded bagel injuries were otherwise exceeded only by potato, apple and onion injuries."

We can't tell you how to slice a bagel (though you can learn how in this WSJ video), but we can help you find the best knives to safely cut them. (Dull knives can also be dangerous, so watch our video on how to sharpen a knife.)

Looking for a top toaster or toaster oven to brown your bagels? The Haier TST850DS toaster, $30, one of six CR Best Buys in our ratings of toasters and toaster ovens (available to subscribers), turned out the best toast in our tests and has a "bagel" setting that toasts on one side only.—Gian Trotta | | Twitter | Forums | Facebook
