Mold and odor issues for some front-loading washing machines spur class actions

Mold and front loaders
Some front-loaders have a mold issue.
Front-loading washing machines are typically more efficient than top-loading models and most in our continuously updated ratings of these washers (available to subscribers) do at least a very good job at washing, making these appliances more popular among U.S. consumers. But as many owners of front-loaders have reported to us in letters and comments to our washing-machine forums, mold buildup and malodorous clothes are a concern. Read "The Clothes Are Clean . . . But What's That Smell?" for some background.

And respondents to the Annual Product Reliability Survey conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center have also weighed in. The survey found that 8 percent of front-loader repairs or serious problems were attributed to mold or mildew. LG and Maytag front-loaders have been slightly more susceptible to this problem than most brands covered in the survey.

Front-loaders are especially prone to mold buildup since the rubber gasket on their doors can collect water in its folds. (Top-loaders need no gasket since their lids face down.) What's more, the horizontal drums on front-loaders also tend to drain less readily than the vertical ones on top-loaders.

The problems spurred a multistate class action against Whirlpool, one of the largest makers of front-load washers, in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio; there's also a similar class action against LG Electronics USA in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

In a ruling related to the Whirlpool class action, U.S. District Judge James S. Gwin granted only a few of Whirlpool's motions against most of the 21 counts. Motions granted involved, for instance, the failure of Whirlpool technicians to fix the mold problems as opposed to Whirlpool's having refused to service the washers.

If you have a front-loading washer, here are some ways you can try to prevent mold and/or odors:
• Run only warm- or hot-water loads unless one requires cold.
• After a load is complete, dry the door gasket (especially the folds) and the glass. Leave the washer door open unless you have small children or another reason not to close it.
• Clean the detergent dispenser and any attachments monthly. Any part that traps moisture can breed mold.
• Run a dehumidifier if your laundry room is damp.

If you see mold buildup in a front-loading washer or start smelling it in clothes just taken from the washer, notify the manufacturer and arrange for service. Save all paperwork related to the purchase and service of your machine and keep a log of contact with the manufacturer, the retailer, and the service company.

I just leave my washer door open all the time and that definitely fixes it for me.

I have an LG Front Load. Love my machine. Leaving the door open and wiping gasket was not working. Mold yuk. Switching laundry soap to specificaly Norwex laundry soap fixed my smell.

This is ridiculous. I have an LG front loader - top of the line - and this is NOT a problem with the machine. You can do lots of internet searches on this an you will see it is a problem with the user. Machines can NOT do everything for a person. I've found that the more advanced a machine, and the more people that buy it, the more complaints. People don't want to take the time to read their manual, do things that are required, or even go out of their way to open a little door.

I have a front loader since 1999, you do need to leave the door open or run it empty on HOT water every now and then.. its a user error I feel..

I heard that some Samsung washing machine have functions cleaning inside itself.

We just got a Bosch Nexxt300DxL and I am thinking of taking it back before hooking it up. I fear the same troubles as others are having. Do you know any thing about Bosch.

My brand new front-load washer and dryer sit idle and unused. They are soon headed back to the appliance store. I have very serious allergies and Asthma. (Mold could do permanent damage or cause death.) I received the pair as a gift from my brother.Had I known, I would have researched the front loaders myself. It's just not worth the risk.I'll take the word of those with a wide frame of reference rather than any old no-it-all fool.

have bosch and mold is a big issue.

Our Whirlpool unfortunately has sginificant recurring problems with mold. By significant imagine mold smell bad enough to make your eyes water. The mold is not only in the gasket, it is withint the unit, the hoses, etc. How do I know this? We have to regularly open it up, drain out the hoses and wipe out the moldy scum.
I don't need to read a couple idiots using CAPITAL letters telling me it is user error. I am not a moron, except for buying this piece of garbage that Consumer Reports recommended. It is the worst appliance I have ever purchased and CR should be ashamed for continuing to recommend it despite these well-documented probems.

I have a front loader washing and i HATE it. We gave good money for a piece of crap that will not balance out it will dance across floor and it makes your clothes smell really bad.Now it says PF [Power Failure] whats up with this so i guess i will go and buy me one for 100.00 dollars instead of 1200.00. At least i fell i have a better chance of it working right and can also do a quick wash or rinse. All the machines like this are terrible . I would not suggesr one to anyone not even my worst enemy. We all need a refund.

what is the best laundry soap to use in a whirlpool front load
