Cash for Clunkers for Appliances Buyer's Guide: Washing machines
January 12, 2010 1:01 PM
If you're planning to take advantage of the $300 million State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program, or cash for clunkers for appliances, and buy a new washing machine, use the advice below:

States offering rebates for washing machines:
Rebates are available in every state and territory except for Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Use our interactive map to find a link to the program Web site in your state.

Rebate amounts: As with every appliance that's part of the cash for clunkers program, rebates vary by state. In Georgia, residents will get back $50 to $100 on a new washer, while in Kansas consumers will receive $800, though only if their household's adjusted gross income does not exceed 75 percent of the state's median income.

Samsung WF218AN washer Repair-or-replace advice: If your washing machine is more than a decade old, a new, efficient model could save you $135 each year on your electric and water bills, not to mention the initial rebate. Plus, it probably doesn't pay to repair a machine that old, according to our "Repair or Replace It?" data.

Buying advice: The biggest decision is choosing between a top- or a front-loader. Top-loaders with a center-post agitator are the least expensive but aren't the best at washing and use the most water and energy. Front-loaders generally use less water and energy but tend to cost more and are prone to vibration when placed on wood-framed floors. See our free buyer's guide for more details.

Models to consider: The following Energy Star-qualified models (listed in alphabetical order) stood out in our tests and should be eligible for a rebate in your state. (Some states are requiring that machines exceed even Energy Star criteria.) Check out our complete ratings of and brand-reliability data for washing machines (available to subscribers).

ok, so i heard about this and I was wondering how does it work? we do we go to see if we qualify? I am very interested in this, please!!

That depends on whether or not your state offers tax rebate. You should call department of energy and ask for details on your state on how to take advantage of tax rebates. In the mean time, get a highly efficient washing machine. Although people will likely go for front loaders when it comes to efficiency, there are now cheaper alternatives. High efficiency top loaders are now also available.

I'm confused about the cash for clunkers concerning washers and dryers. We live in KS when I clicked on the link there was no mention of the program at all. Is this something that is no longer avaliable in KS? We had to wait for our tax refund and now that it's here.... Well you know it's disapointing.

Back in 2006, April 12 to be exact, with Consumer Reports Best Buy, we purchased a Kenmore Elite HE3, model #110. 45872 40-4 front loading washing machine & we are very disappointed in this washer. (I needed to have the Kenmore Dryer Model #110. 66972501 repaired also) After spending $999.99, for this washing machine on 4/12/2006, I was told on 8/9/2010, (less than 4 years & 4 months)--this machine is broken & will cost me too much money to repair. Apparently, the 3 prong feet attached to the drum, break off???? I looked up the "My Sears Community" on the Sears Page on my computer, & found over 200 complaints, just like my complaint. Different Model #, apparently it doesn't matter, they seem to have the same problems. Thanks for nothing. By the way, in the past we have purchased other items, cars, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, etc., you don't have a very good track record as far as I'm concerned.
