With oil prices leaping, I am thinking about replacing my 30 year old oil fired boiler with a more efficient unit. It is difficult to sift thru the various sales pitches. It would be great to see a CR comparison of boilers from different suppliers.
Maybe later in the year you could compare other big ticket items like wood/coal stoves and central air conditining units. The test methodology might be daunting but the results would be very helpful to consumers and ultimately the country.

I paid for a month of consumer reports ( two days ago) and now i can't seem to use it? What's up with that?

I second request for CR to assess boilers, hot-water heaters, ducted air conditioning, both split system and central. Also, solar hot water, solar PV systems.

I called Consumer Reports to find out if they ever did research on water softeners. In all the years of Consumer Reports, no research was done. How about putting that on your list? In checking the Internet, the reviews by customers are not so good. I don't want to buy a lemon.

Don't forget about State and Local rebates that also may apply to appliance purchases.

I have been a CR subscriber for over 15 years and I can say with high certainty they are not the same as they used to.
Over 20 different products I have purchased(the very highiest rated) in the last 2-3 years have miserably failed on such attributes that were just highly praised by the CR experts and could have been very easily assessed and objectively rated - unfortunately most were not examined closely and thus failed.
I feel I am reaching a point where I will no longer even bother consulting CR but just use my own judgement.

I agree with the comments made about product-type coverage is not as broad as one would think - for example, I can never find any information/ratings from shaving razors (non-electric) to home central heat/air-conditioning units.

My understanding is that all hot water heaters are manufactured by just a couple manufacturing companies and retailers just put there name on the manufacturers product. So are not most water heaters exactly the same except for capacity and whether it is gas , electic ect.

I am disappointed. Thought that I would find a comparison chart on Water Heaters, NOPE, NOT HERE.

Maybe we should be able to see a listing of the items for which you have comparison charts as well as your scheduled testing reports for the next 12 months before we sign up.

Remember the informed consumer is a happy consumer.
