So it's no surprise that we continue to get blanketed by your inquiries about EdenPure space heaters, and that our past posts on these appliances are among the most popular on the Home & Garden blog. Read "Are EdenPure Space Heaters Just a Lot of Hot Air?" and this post on EdenPure space heaters and the Heat Surge Roll-n-Glow Electric Fireplace, aka the Amish heater for more details.
Interest in these space heaters makes even more sense when you read the appealing pitch EdenPure makes in its marketing, which features celebrity home improver Bob Vila touting, "I've said it on TV . . . The EdenPure heater really can save you up to 50% on your home heating." (Watch this Vila video on the EdenPure site.)
In our October 2007 report on space heaters, the EdenPure Quartz Infrared 1000 was one of only two space heaters to receive a poor overall score, primarily because of its fair performance for temperature control and ease of use. The mechanical rear-mounted dial-type thermostat on that EdenPure 1000 model likely contributed to its wide temperature swings and less-than-stellar performance.
The manufacturer has since updated the EdenPure Quartz Infrared 1000. The latest version, called the EdenPure Gen 3 Model 1000 (shown below), has new controls and an infrared remote control, and its control panel is now conveniently located on its front. The electronic thermostat control on the similar EdenPure Gen 3 Model 500 is on the back of the unit. This latest EdenPure heater is an improvement over its predecessor. But why drop about $400* on this portable heater when you can find several significantly less-expensive models that rated a very good overall score in our ratings of space heaters (available to subscribers)?
How the EdenPure Gen 3 Model 1000 Works
On the Gen 3 Model 1000, you use up and down scroll buttons on the heater itself and the remote to select from among 13 temperature settings in auto mode, which you can override by choosing the high mode in which the heater defaults to continuous-heat-output operation. (The control panel is shown.) There is no user adjustment for fan speed or heat output, though according to the manual, in auto mode the heat output will be reduced when the temperature is within 2°F of the desired temperature setting.
In an office at our Yonkers, New York, headquarters, we set the thermostat to maintain a slightly warmer temperature than the room temperature. The Gen 3 Model 1000 would cycle on and off according to the heating demand. When the thermostat shut off the heater, the fan would also stop. While off, the fan would occasionally operate for short durations, most likely to move room air across the temperature sensor to get a more accurate room-temperature reading.
We believe that with these control and operating improvements, the updated heater would perform better than its predecessor in our standard temperature-control test.
Heating Claims Don't Add Up
Manufacturers of electric space heaters want you to believe that using one of their devices will lower your heating bill. Lowering your home's thermostat(s) and using your main heating system less in tandem with a space heater—called zone heating—will cut your utility bill. (Every degree you lower the thermostat(s) can save you about 2 percent on your heating bill.) But keep in mind that based on current national average prices and adjusting for the energy losses due to burning a fuel, heating with electricity is about two and a half times more expensive than heating with gas, the most common heating fuel in this country.
EdenPure suggests that "you can turn the heat down in your house as low as 50°F, yet the room you are in will be warm and comfortable. When you move to another room, the EdenPure goes with you. Its wheels make relocation a snap." That scenario assumes that you have to heat only a single room to heat at a time or that you own multiple EdenPure space heaters; that once you're in a room you stay put and don't move around the house; and that you're willing to keep the rest of your home at a chilly 50°F. Lowering the thermostat(s) by 3°F would likely result in minimal discomfort for you and your family, but are you willing to keep your home at 50°F?
The 1,483-watt EdenPure Gen 3 Model 1000 uses quartz infrared elements as the heat source. Its design essentially negates the radiant-heating effect, so it operates more like a typical fan-forced convection heater. While a fan can help mix the room air, there is typically some temperature variation, with cooler air near the floor and warmer air near the ceiling.
Humidity Information Seems All Wet
EdenPure says its heaters "protects the humidity level and air quality important to breathing comfort and personal health," and also notes that "Heat from the copper tubing rides the humidity in the room and provides moist, soft heat—ceiling-to-floor, wall-to-wall—without reducing oxygen or humidity."
Simply put, when you heat a room with any space heater and don't also have an additional source of humidity, say a humidifier, the total moisture in the air in that space will stays the same but the relative humidity will go down, not up. That's true for every space heater we've tested, including the EdenPure Gen 3 Model 1000.
Safety and Space Heaters
The EdenPure Gen 3 Model 1000 is a bulky, rectangular box, but be aware that like any space heater with casters mounted inward from the corners, it could be prone to tipping sideways.
No matter the space heater you use, follow this safety advice and look for models with these key safety features.
In the end, remember that electric space heaters in and of themselves can't save you energy and lower your utility bills over the winter. To do that, you need to weatherize your home and lower your thermostat(s) so your heating system has to work less. But if you're going to buy a space heater, you don't have to shell out $400 or more for the EdenPure Gen 3 Model 1000.

*The EdenPure costs $472, but in recent days the company's Web site lists a price of $397, with free shipping.
I fell for one of these and found it had no special qualities, except possibly a more solid case that would be harder for kids to tip over or get into. Big waste of $$ and ashamed to admit I fell for it.
I bought one and we use it in a 12x20 family room. We love it. I house heat(electric) is turned down and this keep us comfy at 65 and it is not turned on full force.
We purchased a smaller unit for personal use in the living room and the house heat is on 50. We keep our kitchen heat on 65 to 68.
We are two seniors, and our house is very well winterized. If not I would never consider it. Besides Pa. electric has gone up and this generates less.
We were offered $50.00 discount and free shipping.
Eden Pure heaters are a rip off. It is marketing genius that is exploiting people that do not understand electricity.
Any electricity powered appliance will put out heat and it will make that heat at 100% efficiency. If its a hair dryer, computer, coffee maker, power saw, toaster oven, light bulb, it does not matter. If you want to know how much heat you will get out of your appliance, just look for the wattage rating. Most electric space heaters are rated at a maximum of 1500 watts. To convert watts to btu's remember that 1500 watts equals 5120 btu's. It does not matter what heater you buy, you will only get a maximum of 5120 btu's of heat. If you had 15 100 watt light bulbs on all at the same time, you would get exactly the same amount of heat that you would get out of any electric space heater that you could buy. If you want a electric space heater, save your money and buy one that has all the features that you might want for less than $100. I bought one for $15 on sale.
Waste of money.
We bought our edenpure 1000 4yrs ago at about $450, hardly used it.
Is not working this year.
Went to edenpures service website and found that the average element life is 5,000+ hours or approximately 3 to 5 years.
http://www.edenpureservice.com/ProductSupport/Heaters/EdenPURE1000/FAQ/tabid/127/Default.aspx
I guess I got the year calculation out of it.
I could have gone to walmart and bought one of them liquid filled electric radiators for a fraction of the cost and still be ahead of the game even taking the electricity to run one in account.
Speaking of which, you might save money on oil but then you have to consider the money your spending on electricity to run the unit and for only a couple years of usage, wheres the savings?
Well, I took out my DeWalt Cordless Screwdriver Model#DW920 and am in the process of dissembling the Edenpure 1000.
I can find use for the several hundred sheet metal screws and I can use a piece of the sheet metal to patch a hole in the floor board of my 1987 Bronco ll.
Just might find a use for the casters too?
We bought one of these and have NEVER been more disappointed. You must be sitting on the heater to feel the effects. If you are further than 5 feet away, forget it.
We love the heater! Have used it for several years with no issues. We turn the thermostat down to 60 and it will heat our living room up within minutes. Definately worth the $$.
I have purchased over three of these units and I love them. I love the money that they have saved me. I am not sure why anyone would be disappointed.
I personally saved enough on my gas bill that the gas company came out to inspect my meter to make sure I hadn't tampered with it. So, I believe that they work and when I showed the guy from the gas company how I was saving money. He asked me where he could purchase a unit.
I bought an Edenpure after seeing their infomercial where Bob Vila explained how furnace and duct systems could be losing 50 cents on the dollar spent on gas. I looked up the Dept. of Energy report they quoted (DOE/GO-102004-1606) and then looked at my own heating ducts. Sure enough, I have metal ducts running through cold outside walls. That explained why my family room was colder than the rest of the house. The Edenpure does a great job in that room, and we have saved some money on gas because we did turn the thermostat down for the rest of the house. We bought another one for my in-laws for Christmas, and they love it.
GET REAL... MY ELECTRIC BILL WENT FROM 700 KLW A MONTH TOO A COOL 2000 KLW A MONTH AND GAS BILL DROPPED VERY LITTLE. THIS HEATER MAY WORK IN A TRAILER PARK. BUT IF YOU OWN A HOME THE ELECTRIC JUMPED THREE TIMES THE NORMAL.!!!!
GET REAL PEOPLE ASK THE OWNERS OF HOMES ...THE NORMAL WINTER ELETRIC BILL MONTHLY IS 600 TO 700 KLW. WITH THE EDEN 1000 THE BILL SHOT UP TO A COOL 2000 KLW THATS ALMOST 3 TIMES THE ELETRIC BILL AND THE GAS STAYED THE SAME. THIS HEATER MAY WORK IN YOUR TRAILER PARK HOME BUT IF YOUR A HOME OWNER IT WILL COST YOU. TALK TO PEOPLE THAT OWN ONE . MICHIGAN WARNING.
JUNK A BIG RIPOFF THANKS BOB
Have had our model 1000 for three years and love it. Had a 500 which stopped working at about 11 months. It had a 12 month guarentee so we returned it for a replacement (save your original box for returns). EdenPURE said they were out of 500's so they replace ours with the 1000. We heat both a family room and garden room (with lots of windows) and it works just fine. We also have a cathedral ceiling in the garden room and use the ceiling fan (on low) to help circulate the warm air. Couldn't complain about the service we experienced when we had to return the 500. Haven't done any specific data on savings but our gas and electric bills are lower, but that could be due to a number of factors ... we have the heat in the rest of the house down to 61.
After buying 3 different types of electic heaters, without a fan to move the heated air around, none of them would heat my 22x24 sq. ft. garage.
Over 2 years ago I bought the 1000 EdenPURE and it is the only heater that heats my garage and keeps it warm in -20 degree F. weather, where I can work in shirt sleeves and be very comfortable. I have the heater on a far wall facing the centre of the garage and I work olong the other wall. I have it set on the middle setting and it is on all the time with no huge increase on my power bill.
Sorry about everyones bad luck and negative feed back, but I am totally thrilled with my EdenPURE.
Oh, I did recommend this heater to a friend and he bought 2 1000 EdinPURE for his 32x32 2 storey log cabin and he is also thrilled with these heaters.
The only downfall with these heaters is when you have a power outage the heaters do no come back on when power is restored, but in fact you have to manually turn the heater back on and adjust the thermostat.
I purchased the Gen.3 1000 Edenpure space heater in Dec 2008 and set the thermostat and let it run day and night. BIG MISTAKE. The area I was trying to heat was a large open area on the 1st floor which includes the kitchen, living room, family room, somewhere around 1000 sq.ft.with no vaulted ceilings, which it should handle according to the advertisement. I could not set the thermostat to the furnace down as advertised as the house would get cold. After getting my 1st electric bill after letting it run for a month I had an atrocious bill compared to normal. I shut it off, pulled the plug, boxed it up and sent it back well within the allowed 90 days. One of the biggest wastes of money out there. A space heater is a space heater and the $39.00 units give off the same amount of heat as this thing did and give you a large electric bill also. Stay with gas heat. Much cheaper.
Purchased a Zen Living on EBAY and it was a big disappointment. Put it in a 1000 sq. ft. room and with the setting on high would not keep the temperature from dropping, let alone raising the temperature of the room.
I bought one of these and it was good for little over a year then just died. There was NO reduction in the heating bill. Too bad it is out of warranty. Do NOT buy one of these!
Me and my dad bought one of the eden pure. We love them wonderful. I have a room that is 20 feet wide and 32 feet long big family den we added on our house has centeral heat and air but not in this room it keeps the entire room warm with no other heat. It is wonderful A+ our heat bills have been half what they were last year. My dad loves his also would not take anything for it. Is ordered 2 more for his entire home to be heated with eaden pure.
ANY 1500 watt heater uses 1080KW a month x 10 cents a KW = $108 a month if it runs all month long. It was zero outside. My electric furnace / heat pump broke. It was 53 in the house when I woke up. I put my Sunbeam 1500 watt portable electric heater on in the master bedroom. It heated the room to 63 which was fine until the furnace was repaired 5 hours later. If you want to pay $400 to $500 or whatever for an Edenpure 1500 watt portable heater, to heat my bedroom or any room, be my guest. I have a Sunbeam in my bathroom and one in each of the upstair's bedrooms. My Sunbeam 1500 watt portable heaters cost $15 each at Walmart. The same heat but 30 times cheaper. My heaters are about 9 inches high and 7 inches wide. LOL
In my many years of retail/marketing experience, it is a well known fact that it is a lot easier to complain about a product than to praise it. Think about that. I've got two EdenPURE Heaters, love them both! They're safe around my two children, and keep our Family Room, and bedrooms nice and comfortable. The best feature in my opinion is the heavy duty cord, unlike most portable electric heaters that have a flimsey extension-cordlike grade. I can go to sleep at night knowing that the cord isn't going to melt and cause a fire in my sleep.
Of course, the heating elements may go bad over time, but they do so in other portable heaters as well! At least with this, you don't have to buy a whole new unit, just those elements at a fraction of the cost. It'll cost the same as buying one of the cheap, dangerous brands, but much safer!
We bought an Eden Pure heater like the one shown in these pictures about three years ago. It helps heat our house in sub-zero weather and we've had no problems with it so far. We purchased from a traveling sales rep at, supposedly, a discount price. Soon after, we got a mail ad where we could have spent less for the same heater. It saved some on our natural gas bill while the electric bill increased a bit, definitely did not pay for itself as the salesman claimed it would. Electricity rates in our state just went up 20% so we don't expect future savings. Our Amish Fireplace is another story; we're delighted with that!
I purchased an EdenPure 500 model for myself and a friend. The heater stopped running within one season. I purchased a Sun Twin Elite model thinking that the 500 was just too small. It lasted for one season and gave out before the second season ended. The one I purchased for my friend also gave out.
Eden Pure will replace for the cost of shipping and handling both ways and repairs. The cost is very close to a brand new heater and much more than paying extra for the furnace to heat my whole house.
I do not recommend the EdenPure heaters as a cost saving device or for reliablilty.
I've seen the cheesy advertisments in news paper's and TV commercials on the Eden Pure heaters, A friend of mine owns a couple of them and normally uses propane heat, and he said he saves nearly $400 in propane bills a month, but he uses slightly more electricity, so I purchased one for me and my mother, who uses propane also, she only spends an extra $35 on electricity, and her house is warmer than when she was using her furnace, I use natural gas, This heater kept my home comfy, and my gas bills really low, and my electric was about $40 more than usual, but my saving was far more from not using my furnace, as a matter of fact, the Gas company even visited my home to make sure I wasn't tampering with the meter, I own a Gen 3 1000, I had one electrical problem, a transformer went out, it took a month before I got it back, and yes, I got socked with a high gas bill, So in a nut shell, This device does work as advertised ! savings depends on square footage of your home, the type of heating you normally use, so if your using propane, not having a Eden pure is like throwing money out the window , Getting a flawless unit is the trick here, they are getting better from my understanding, worth the investment.
as a note, my mother normally gets 3 gas fill ups in the course of one winter, she only got one this year, and she still had 40% gas left in her tank yet, so I say the savings is self expainatory.
I purchased an EdenPure Gen3 1000 this past fall because of all of the so called "positive" feedback I have heard about them. I first received it in mid-October and used it a little bit from the get go and didn't really notice too much of a difference in my electric bill. But as winter approached, which we had a rough one this winter, my first elctric bill in which I used it completely, sky rocketed! At first I ran it as they recommended and turned down my thermostat on my heater, and then the second month I cut my use of it in half, and still my electric bill was still way up from my previous years during the winter months. Yes my gas bill did go down a little bit, but it definately DID NOT offset the increased difference in my electricity bill and the fact that I paid $400 for the unit itself. Not pleased at all with this unit.
I've had my two EdenPure heaters for five or six years now. I haven't had any problems with either of them yet.
High heating bills have always been a problem for me because 1) my house runs on propane, 2) I hate the Simonton windows that were put in when this house was built in 2000--the windows LEAK cold air into the room thru the area at the sides of the top of the bottom pane, and 3) I live in an open-field, high wind area.
The EdenPures haven't cost me a lot extra in electricity. I've noticed when running one 8-12 hours a day in a large room 5-6 days a week that my electric bill has been maybe $15-20 extra/month I would guess. I keep my house's thermostat turned down to 62 during the day and 58 at night, and use the EdenPures in one room at a time. In 2008 I replaced my completely-inefficient fireplace with one of the newer Heat and Glo fireplaces. Its efficiency rating is something like 76% if I recall. On some days I use my fireplace at my sole heat source; these new fireplaces can really heat up the whole house nicely. But on days I'm not running the fireplace, I use the EdenPure in one room and it is really wonderful. I'm also a fire paranoid, and I've always felt safer with my EdenPures than with those cheap little space heaters you see in the stores. (And while we're on the subject, why the heck doesn't someone make a space heater for a bathroom that ONLY operates with a 60-min or less mechanical-dial countdown timer? Does anyone else out there have elderly parents who they worry about forgetting to turn off their bathroom space heaters? I mean, sure, there are thermostats and safety features on these cheap space heaters, where the thing shuts off if it tips over. But what if someone's forgotten and left it ON and then accidentally dropps a sock or a towel or something near or on the top of the heater--which then catches fire? I see lots of space heaters with a timer FEATURE, but non where you're REQUIRED to use the timer or else it won't run.)
We absolutely have enjoyed our Eden Pure heater. We probably saved enough $$$ this winter to buy it.
Our bed room is very large (probably 20 x 23) and heated it so well we turned our all electric house down to 60 degrees and were nice and cozy. This was even during our coldest winter months!!! Don't understand all these complaints we have only praise!!
Thermostat was signaling 73 --the maximum I could get with EdenPure-- for a regular space living room. Electricity bill reached double amount compared to previous winter. Therefore, I desisted of buying a second unit, as EdenPure with its mail publicity was suggesting me to do! I need another winter for assessment, but so far I am doubting it is just a scam, a rip off.
we purchased an eden pure heater in Dec 2009 and I ran it for the christmas new years time and even afterwards until I received my first hydro bill...Upon checking it out the heater used 41 extra kilowatt hours over and above my regular use..When you get a $750.00 hydro bill and the $500.00 cost for the heater it really makes wonder where the savings are..Neddless to say the heater has been gturned off and will never bu used again..The company will do nothing for you because the 60 day return policy is long over before you get your first bill with the heateron...This is how companys get rich and why would Bob Vila promote something like this unless he is getting a financial kick back ..BUYER BEWARE
I am renting a cabin type place on an island....no insulation .. so it's like heating a tent with windows. cost me over $300 in the 1st month to heat with presto type logs. Heat bill was $160 for two months...then bought my two Eden Pure Gen 1000>>the improved model....Electric bill for the first 2 months, running one heater upstairs, during the day, the other, downstairs, during the night.....$120.00
Right now, it's mid summer....and am running fans to TRY and control the heat from westerly facing windows...it's 90 in here right now.....lite bill might be scary!
Overall, I AM very happy w/these heaters!!
AM MOVING THO.....THIS JOINT IS THE PITTS....THE VIEW IS AWESOME.....BUTT???
Oh...they were $300 each....no shipping...
Thanks for the post! I've also heard that a lot of people have saved a lot of money with EdenPure space heaters.

I found a eden pure 500 model that is 4 years old at the dump! It did not work so i took it apart and found one element was broken. Went online and for $47.00 bought 3 replacements. I only replaced the broken one and the unit works fine. Don't know if it's going to work better then my oilfilled radiator heater yet. But anyone who has one that has stopped working should take it apart and check the elements. It has a million screws but is really pretty simple. I well post in the spring what i think about it.
Our Edenpure 500 just went out and it was barely used. Where
can we get it repaired locally? We live just west of Detroit, Michigan. Would the cost of repair make it worth it?
IF I had to comment, I would say Eden Pure Heater Representatives make the comments that are so absolutely, down right, so righteous, that it makes you want to go out and buy one right now.
The ones that speak the truth or somewhat truth, in my belief say don't buy one because...
After serious consideration, I was going to buy one for the daughter in law, but rather put the money to the gas bill instead.
Thank you for your review. I'm an engineer and am very skeptical about this heater due to the fact that they don't have a trail period or offer refund. If these companies believe in this heater, why don't they offer the "satisfaction guarantee" like many other products.
Thank you for your honest review; it saved me time and money.
Bought two of the SunTwin Edenpure...what a rip off! After less than 20 days one was returned and refunded. The second slowing diminished its performance to the point that after the first winter, I decided to donate to the Salvation Army b/c the exorbitant initial cost of the unit, increased electric bills and cumbersome wood case that IS NOT FURNITURE.
The quartz bulbs DO NOT last 20,000+ as claimed on website, but burnout somewhere between 2,200 and 3,000 hrs. Of the six bulbs in the unit, 4 are burnt out after one heating season. Save your money and buy micathermic, radiant oil or ceramic...
Buyer beware !! Don't believe all the TV hype. If you can buy one for $100.00 or less, that's about it's worth!
We tried the EdanPURE heater and I was really amazed at how this little heater could heat so much for so little! At the end of the month, we found that we had saved around $100 on our electric bill. That is truely amazing! We will continue to use the EdanPURE heater.
i bought one to and worked great for the first winter then broke pay $100 to fix it worked again next winter then another $100 now 3rd winter coming can u guess what yes broke they r JUNK and all they say is send me another $100
yea its bogus its in possible to lower your tstat to 50 or youll have problems with mold and mildew and wet walls and ceilings it be so humid .... the best i found is keep your tstat at 67 and with programable tstat 65 to 68 were and thats a good comfort zone soon as you turn it below 64 youll run into issues breathing problems and keep your stuff off the registers if theres a couch or furniture take a cereal box and built a transition to take it out from under it with duct tape ect and dont cover your register with stuff thinking you''l save money bye not heating a room you''l burn up the heat exchanger and it cost more money cuz doing that furnace runs the same but it then becomes oversized
Happy that I read all the comments...I was about to buy the edenpure space heater...changed my mind. Seems as tho it depends on the luck of the draw. That's too much money to take a chance.
