Low VOC Green Paints Consumer Reports Ratings
Some green paints scored well in our latest report.
In recent years, very few low-VOC paints were standouts in our tests. But in our  March 2010 report on interior paints, nearly all of the top-scoring finishes are among the tested products with the lowest level of volatile organic compounds. VOCs contribute to smog formation and are linked to respiratory illness and memory impairment.

Behr Premium Plus Ultra paints earned the top spot in the low-luster, flat, and semigloss categories we test and also have less than 50 grams of VOCs per liter, the threshold for being considered a low-VOC finish. At $31 to $34 per gallon, the Premium Plus Ultra finishes cost more than many other paints we reviewed, though they also have a built-in primer, which could save you time and money if you're painting over bare wood or wallboard.

Not all green paints made the grade in our latest tests. Home Depot's Freshaire Choice and the private-label Mythic, both of which are claimed to have no VOCs, were no better than good at hiding and fade resistance.

For more information on the organizations that certify green paints, read "Behind the Green Labels," which looks at Greenguard, Green Seal, GreenSure, and Green Promise.
