Since misery apparently loves company—and if you happen to have some free time because your stuck at home in the wake of this past weekend's snowpocalypse/snowmageddon and if your power is still on—you might want to read about another huge winter storm that ended 32 years ago today: the Great Blizzard of 1978.

According to This Day in History on History.com, the Nor'easter that in three days dumped up to 55 inches of snow on some parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts finally subsided. Considered at the time as New England's worst blizzard since 1888, the storm caused 56 deaths from February 5 to February 8 and left thousands homeless. Read the rest of the details in "New England Digs Out After Blizzard."

By the way, another major winter storm appears to have the Midwest and East Coast in its crosshairs. Use our tips to be sure you're prepared and stock your emergency kit.
