By the Numbers: Washing machines head up the class for smart appliances
March 17, 2010 12:44 PM

$5.46 billion

Projected U.S. sales of smart appliances by 2015, according to "Smart Appliance Report 2010," from Zpryme Research & Consulting. In 2008, annual revenue for the entire U.S. appliance industry was about $22 billion.

Washing machines are expected to post the greatest intelligence gains, accounting for 19.2 percent of smart-appliance sales by 2015. Smart refrigerators and dryers are projected to grab 17.4 and 17.3 percent of the market, respectively.

It makes sense that washing machines will lead the way for smart appliances, which among other high-tech capabilities can make cost-saving adjustments by receiving price signals from utilities. Since washers are in use only some of the time, they can better take advantage of lower electricity rates from demand-response pricing.

Large appliance manufacturers are leading the smart-appliance revolution, according to Zpryme. See our 2010 International Builders' Show coverage of General Electric's (watch video above) and Whirlpool's smart appliances. The consulting firm also suggests that in order for smart appliances to move mainstream, small and midsize companies will have to enter the smart-appliance market, fostering competition and lower prices.

Looking at a new front-loading high-efficiency washer? There are several potentially show-stopping pitfalls to watch out for before you buy. (1) Your washer hook-up must be on the LEFT side of your laundry room (ours wasn't--significant $$$ to have it and the dryer hook-up switched) and (2) you need to check clearances carefully. The front-loaders seem to be significantly deeper AND you must now allow for the opening arc of the washer door. Matching dryers also appear to be deeper by a few inches and this can cause problems in situations where space is limited.
