By the Numbers: Cash for appliances rebate program boosts April shipments of major appliances
June 8, 2010 2:43 PM

20 percent

Year-over-year increase in shipments of dishwashers, dryers, freezers, ranges/ovens, refrigerators, and washing machines for April 2010, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, which attributes the upswing to the ongoing cash for appliances rebate program.

"The state rebate programs, also known as 'cash for appliances,' have had a measurable, positive impact on the appliance industry," said AHAM president Joseph M. McGuire in a news release (PDF). "People who were sitting on the fence deciding whether to repair or replace their appliance were offered a compelling incentive to purchase a new energy-efficient product."

Refrigerator shipments saw the biggest jump, climbing 37 percent. Most states included refrigerators in their cash for appliances program, and refrigerator rebates were often among the biggest offered.

In other cash for appliances news, the North Carolina Energy Efficient Appliance Replacement and Rebate Program is the latest program to close. The state Web site indicates, "Currently, all rebate funds for this program have been reserved. However, you may still add your name to the waiting list. In the event additional funds become available, rebate applications will be processed in the order they are received. To add your name to the waiting list, complete the online application and follow the instructions listed on the confirmation page of the application."

Cash for appliances has closed in 18 locations, and rebates are still available in 33 states and territories. To see how much money remains where you live and for other program details, read our post from the other day.

West Virginia is scheduled to start its cash for appliances rebate program on June 17, and Tennessee's is also supposed to begin this month. The District of Columbia and Nebraska will launch theirs in July. Guam's program was supposed to start in late May, but its status is unclear.
