During cash for appliances, find the best places to buy major appliances
June 10, 2010 11:46 AM

A primary goal of the $300 million cash for appliances rebate program is to pull old inefficient dishwashers, heating and cooling equipment, refrigerators, washing machines, and other appliances off the grid and replace them with higher-efficiency qualifying models, saving you money and helping the environment.

As we've been detailing in our cash for appliances coverage over the past year or so, you can take advantage of rebates that range from $50, say for a room air conditioner in California, to as much as $500, say for a gas condensing furnace in Colorado. Check out the status of the cash for appliances program in our post from earlier this week.

You can add to those savings by shopping at retailers that offer discounts on products eligible for cash for appliance rebates, though you'll also want to do business with stores with a sizable selection of quality merchandise, easy checkout, good customer service, and other factors.

In our 2009 Appliance Shopper Satisfaction Survey of more than 21,000 readers conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, we found that when they buy major appliances, shoppers prefer walk-in stores to online vendors.

Among the standout major-appliance retailers in the survey are Illinois-based Abt Electronics and Pacific Sales, with stores in Arizona, California, and Nevada. Survey respondents also expressed high satisfaction with independent retailers in their area.

You'll find full details from our report on the best places to buy large and small appliances in our special section on kitchen remodeling in the August 2010 issue of Consumer Reports, online and on newsstands in late June.

I think I subscribed to Consumer Reports on line. Can you verify that for me, please? I've forgotten how to get in.
Thank you,
