EPA WaterSense for Showerheads
Look for the WaterSense label on a new showerhead.
Showerheads have joined bathroom faucets and accessories, toilets, and urinals in the family of products covered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WaterSense program. In 2009, WaterSense helped save consumers more than 36 billion gallons of water and $267 million on their water and sewer bills, according to the EPA.

The move to add showerheads to WaterSense makes sense, considering that showers account for almost 17 percent of all residential indoor water use. To qualify for WaterSense, a showerhead must use no more than 2 gallons per minute (gpm) the maximum flow rate for any showerhead is currently 2.5 gpm. The showerhead must also meet performance standards designed to ensure that it provides a shower experience equal to or better than that of your old showerhead.

In our latest review of showerheads, several models had a flow rate of 2 gpm or less. The multisetting American Standard FloWise Dual Function Water Saving 1660.717, $50, was a standout performer. With a flow rate of 2 gpm, this American Standard showerhead was described by test panelists as providing a refreshing and stimulating shower. See our ratings of single-setting and multihead showerheads from brands like American Standard, Delta, Hansgrohe, Kohler, Moen, and WaterPik (available to subscribers).

Many municipalities offer rebates on WaterSense products, though showerheads are not yet listed among the items getting rebates. But if you're buying a new showerhead, ask your water company or municipality if there are any givebacks to take advantage of.
