The Steadywash, a 27x27-inch-wide, 3-inch-high metal platform ($200) that's mounted on springs and sits under your washing machine, significantly reduced vibration transmitted to the floor surface but did not totally eliminate it. Look for full details on the Steadywash and the antivibration pads (which cost about $20 to $50) in the August issue of Consumer Reports, online and on newsstands in late June.

Note that Steadywash manufacturer recommends a 4-inch clearance on the left and right sides and top of your washer and 7 inches at the back. The company also sells a riser for your dryer to bring it to the same height as the washer.

Of course, you can avoid having to buy a device intended to eliminate vibration by buying a washing machine with a very good or excellent score for vibration in our tests. Look for those models in our ratings of front- and top-loading washing machines (available to subscribers).
