Programs open in 33 states and territories

Vermont has become the latest state to close its cash for appliances program, after residents of the Green Mountain State exhausted $559,000 in rebates on washing machines, refrigerators, gas-powered tankless water heaters, gas furnaces, and gas boilers. More than 80 percent of that money was quickly spoken for on March 6, when the program launched during a state tax holiday.

Rebates are still available in 33 states and territories—check the Department of Energy website to see if yours is on the list. In other cash for appliances news:

• One state, one territory, and the District of Columbia have yet to launch their programs. Tennessee has $5,936,000 for rebates for room and central air conditioners, air-source heat pumps, and gas furnaces but hasn't set an opening date. Guam is slated to open in late August, and the District of Columbia will begin its program on September 20.
• California will decide next week whether to extend its program to more appliances, including dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators.
