Adding car repair, Home Depot thinks outside the big box
Mar 4, 2011 2:00 PM
Home Depot

You've maybe picked up engine oil at your local Home Depot. But an oil change for your car? It could happen now that the home improvement giant has decided to sell off portions of its parking lots to auto repair shops. The move is part of a larger shift in strategy that big-box retailers are taking to turn excess store and parking space over to other businesses, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Moving forward, retailers like Walmart and Best Buy say they will be rolling out smaller locations, with footprints of 40,000 square feet compared to the 185,000-square-foot megacenters that were developed 20 years ago.
