Even though the calendar doesn’t officially say so, Memorial Day begins a summer of entertaining outdoors, something for which this season’s grills are well-equipped. In a Facebook video chat this Thursday (1 PM ET), Consumer Reports will take you behind the scenes to show how we test gas grills as well as the hottest new cooking accessories for your grill.
Some grills come with griddle, pizza stone and steamer inserts but you can also buy them separately. Grills are making it easier to juggle cooking tasks by featuring fold-down side tables and ample cabinets. Our latest gas grill tests include some innovative grills such as one that hitches to your car for the tailgate party and another that’s a combination of gas and charcoal.
Joining us again this year is food writer and chef Kenji Lopez-Alt who will teach you some new grilling techniques. Lopez-Alt writes the Food Lab column on Serious Eats, which is “dedicated to solving the mysteries of home cooking with the aid of science, engineering, and obsessive testing.” Look for his first book—The Food Lab: Better Home Cooking Through Science—next year.
So bookmark our Facebook page and come back on Thursday. Spoiler alert: There may be fire! Larry Ciufo (at right), who tests our grills, will demonstrate the flare-up test by flipping rib-eye steaks on a hot grill. If you have questions for Larry or Kenji or Consumer Reports editors, you can submit them through a Facebook or Twitter account.
