Would you give up chocolate, alcohol or going to the movies for a cup of coffee? Four out of 10 coffee drinkers said they would, according to a recent survey conducted by a California coffee company. That devotion stopped short, however, when respondents were asked if they would give up their car, job or sex for a cup of joe. Maybe they haven’t tasted the winners of Consumer Reports recent coffee tests.
Gloria Jean's Colombian Supremo and Newman's Own Colombian Especial topped the charts of our tests of 16 Colombian brews, knocking the past winner, Eight O'Clock 100 percent Colombian, into the middle of the pack. And we found a CR Best Buy among the four Ethiopian brews we tasted: Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Ethiopia Yirgacheffe.
And for the first time, we tested K-cup single serving coffees. We judged all three to be good. K-cups are one of fastest growing coffee trends—35 percent of those with a pod coffeemaker bought it within the past six months, reports the National Coffee Association of the USA.
In our tests of 12 pod coffeemakers, the Senseo Supreme 7832 topped the Ratings. Another Senseo, the Senseo SL7810/65, also anchored the bottom earning a score of just 34 out of 100. So if you’re one of the 86 percent of coffee drinkers who likes to brew their own at home, best to check our coffeemaker Ratings. Who knows, you may want to consider trading in your old Chevy for the top-rated Cuisinart Brew Central.
