There's been a lot of trash talk lately in the Consumer Reports labs, specifically trash bag talk. Our testers wanted to know which tall kitchen garbage bags, the top-selling type, can do the heavy lifting and which can't. Two top brands hoisted 50 pounds of barbell weights before stretching and breaking but one weakling failed at 35 pounds.

To test the garbage bags, we use a contraption that lifts the bags aloft with a pulley apparatus. The tester puts a cloth in the bottom of the bag and then adds the weights until the bags give way. In the end we recommended three: Glad Drawstring Stronger with Less Plastic, Hefty The Gripper and Glad ForceFlex Tear Resistant, which scored a tad lower than the other two but also costs a tad less.

Of course, if you buy bags for light trash you can try some of the lower ranked models and save. Member's Mark, sold at Sam's Club, costs only seven cents a bag while the top bags were more than twice that.
