French's wants its mustard to be more than a condiment
April 27, 2012 10:00 AM

Starting in May, ads for French's mustard will encourage you to not only slather the condiment on your food but to put it in your recipes as well. The series of print and television ads feature foods other than picnic fare with the tagline, "Friends. Family. French's." When Consumer Reports tasted 11 mustards it judged French's Classic yellow mustard to be very good. We also found some tasty Dijons, a type often called for in recipes.

How long to keep ketchup and other common condiments
April 20, 2012 4:00 PM

That mustard that's been in the refrigerator since last summer's cookout should still be okay to slather on a hot dog this weekend. But if you're pulling out pickles and ketchup of the same vintage, it's safer to toss them than dress your burger with them. Mustard typically keeps for a year in the refrigerator but the shelf life of most other condiments is much shorter.

Mind your meat temperature when cooking on the grill
April 11, 2012 10:00 AM

Don't forget to take your meat thermometer along when you move your cooking from the range to the grill. Using a thermometer takes the guesswork out of grilling and can prevent a nasty bout of food poisoning. Not all grills cook evenly so it's important to take the temperature of your meat. Just remember these three numbers: 145 degrees F for whole meats, 160 for ground meats and 165 for all poultry.

A tribute to two champions of breakfast

Two octogenarian entrepreneurs who helped change the taste of breakfast died recently: Murray Lender, who with his brothers parlayed their father's local bagelry into a national brand that last year sold more than 23 million packages. And Samuel Glazer who co-founded Mr. Coffee with a friend in the 1970s changing the way Americans enjoyed their morning brew. Grills fit for a king, or at least a prime minister
March 15, 2012 5:00 PM

The last time President Obama was at 10 Downing Street, he and Prime Minister David Cameron flipped burgers for some British and U.S. service members. This week it was Obama’s turn as host and to celebrate their “brave and foolish” barbecuing efforts, he presented Cameron with a Braten 1000 Series Grill made by Engelbrecht Grills and Cookers in Paxton, Illinois. The grill, which was donated, normally starts at $1,895 but with such extras as a Presidential seal, would have been priced higher. You can get one of Consumer Reports’ recommended grills for considerably less and eat like a king, if not a head of state.

Cool refrigerator features don't amount to much if food spoils
January 18, 2012 3:45 PM

The newest refrigerators sport lots of features that promise to be family friendly and energy efficient. Kenmore’s Grab-N-Go has a door-within-a-door for easy access to the items you use most. LG just introduced a refrigerator with a “blast chiller” that can cool a can of beer or soda in a matter of minutes. And both Samsung and LG have “smart” refrigerators that can scan your grocery receipt or tell you when you’re low on milk. While these whiz-bang features may be convenient, they can’t replace good old common sense when it comes to proper food storage.
