Consumers Union says Obama's call for FDA reform is "good news"
Feb 2, 2009 3:24 PM

President Barack Obama's call for a "complete review" of the Food and Drug Administration is good news, a Consumers Union statement said Monday.

"I think that the FDA has not been able to catch some of these things as quickly as I expect them to catch," the president said in an NBC interview broadcast Monday. "And so we're gonna be doing a complete review of FDA operations."

Jean Halloran, Director of Food Policy Initiatives for Consumers Union, said a review is a good start, but the government must go further to keep the nation's food supply safe.

"President Obama's review and his appointment of a new FDA Commissioner will definitely improve FDA's use of its existing resources and authority," Halloran said. "However, Congress must also act soon to modernize the agency and give it the additional resources and authority it desperately needs."

The president's focus on the FDA comes after a 500-person salmonella outbreak was linked to tainted peanut products from a Georgia factory.

"FDA was almost completely unaware of the problems at Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), despite the fact that problems had existed for some time, and that salmonella contaminated peanut butter at another Georgia factory just two years ago," Halloran added. "Unfortunately, this is not surprising. FDA inspects U.S. food production facilities only about once every ten years on average."

With its "Not In My Food" campaign, Consumers Union has been advocating for a major overhaul of the FDA's food safety program, and now it appears that the White House is looking to do just that.

"At bare minimum, we should be able to count on our government keeping our kids safe when they eat peanut butter," Obama said in the interview, which was conducted Sunday at the White House.
