Identity theft update
Apr 27, 2009 12:37 PM
Tod's tightwad mug Since sharing my story earlier this month as the victim of identity theft, many readers have asked whether the IRS has gotten any closer to resolving the protracted mess. Just to recap, some scoundrel filed a phony 2007 Federal tax return with my name and Social Security number on it, seeking a refund check for thousands of dollars. The return had a mailing address for an apartment in New York City.

According to Google maps, there is such an address, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been tempted to check out the location in person. I’ve decided, however, that discretion is the better part of valor and, so far, have been able to resist the temptation. Still, part of me would love to play detective. I also have this fantasy in which a swat team breaks down the door and storms the apartment, locking up the crooks, and ending my nightmare. I can dream, can’t I?

In any event, since my original post, I’ve received news, both good and bad. The good news is that I just got my refund check – for 2008. That’s right. 2008. I had to file a paper return for last year because the electronic return I filed via Turbo Tax was rejected as a result of the ongoing investigation involving my 2007 return. You’d think the IRS wouldn’t issue my 2008 refund until they sorted out the 2007 debacle, but if that’s what you thought, you’d be wrong.

The bad news: My tax advocate tells me that the IRS needs yet another month – until the end of May – to continue its probe. I have no idea why. The Feds never reveal precisely what’s causing the delay, though my advocate says I shouldn’t read anything into this latest bump in the road. It’s the fourth or fifth time I’ve been told the IRS needs more time, though the agency has everything they need from me to make a determination. So, I’ll continue to wait. It’s only been 14 months.

I’ll get back to you when there’s new news to report.
