Tax day's here: Some reminders
Apr 15, 2009 10:20 AM

The devil is in the details, so before you file your tax return today, either electonically or by mail, check out the IRS's last-minute reminders

Some of the simplest mistakes--such as having one digit off on a Social Security number--can delay your refund or even trigger a letter from the IRS. Here are some other items to consider before sealing that envelope or clicking "Send."

•Extension for flood victims. Residents of the Red River flood area have another month--until May 15-- --to file their federal returns. For details on whether you're eligible for this extension, click here

•Some filing fees now deductible. Credit- and debit-card fees for folks who itemize and file their federal returns electronically are now tax-deductible.

•New mailing address for many. Folks filing by mail from Delaware, Illinois, New York and Rhode Island need to send their federal forms to new locations. Illinois filers will need to send to a center in Fresno, Ca. The others will need to send to Kansas City, Mo. Click here for the details.

•Last call for 2005 returns. Today is the last day to file a 2005 tax return if you haven't already done so. The IRS says it has about $1.3 billion in refunds awaiting such taxpayers, and they won't get another chance at that cash.

•IRA deadline. Today is the last day to invest in a tax-deductible IRA for 2008. A recent article in Consumer Reports Money Adviser discusses the merits of such a move. -- Tobie Stanger
