Accident-forgiveness auto insurance isn't for everyone
Mar 18, 2010 10:25 AM
Accident_forgiveness_auto_insurance If you have a car accident that’s even partly your fault, you could see an increase in your auto insurance premium. That’s why insurance policies with a so-called accident-forgiveness provision seem especially attractive. If you have one or, in some cases, more at-fault accidents, you won’t see that nasty rate hike when your policy’s renewal comes.

But accident-forgiveness plans aren’t for everyone.

First off, you may not be eligible, especially if you haven’t been a long-time customer with your insurer or don’t have a clean driving record. Accident-forgiveness policies may be more expensive that standard ones, or the provision may be an extra-cost option.

For tips on what to look for when considering such a policy—and on other ways to save on car insurance—read our report, “Is accident forgiveness right for you?,” which appeared in Consumer Reports Money Adviser newsletter.—Anthony Giorgianni
