With Jan 12 marking one year since a 7.0-magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti, you may be wondering what charities did with the $1.4 billion they raised from Americans on the victims' behalf.
To find out, the non-profit watchdog group Charity Navigator asked major charities to provide information on how donations were used. It asked the groups to describe their accomplishments, their future plans for helping the stricken country, and their take on the biggest obstacles that Haiti continues to face.
The group has posted the information for the 37 groups that responded.
For example, among its accomplishments over the past year, Connecticut-based AmeriCares said that it has given more than $30 million in medical assistance to dozens of health care facilities and provided medicine and medical supplies to 200 volunteer medical teams.
In a message posted on the White House web site, Patrick Gaspard, director of the White House Office of Political Affairs and the highest ranking Haitian-American official in the Obama Administration, praised the efforts of non-governmental organizations. "We remember the non-governmental organizations who swept in to provide immediate relief, and continue there today, helping to rebuild the country," he wrote. He added later that "a great deal of work remains ahead, work that will take years to complete."
