Last month we noted how the travel industry was responding to civil unrest in Egypt. Now that the small Persian Gulf island nation of Bahrain is in the throes of violence, the advice for American travelers is not nearly as dramatic.

At press time, the U.S. State Department had not issued a Travel Warning or Travel Alert for Bahrain. However, Travel Warnings have been issued or updated in the last week for Mali, Egypt, and Pakistan.

The airline industry is taking a more pro-active approach. United Airlines, for example, has issued a travel waiver and is eliminating fees on ticket changes for flights booked through Feb. 21st.

As for those who were planning to sail in the region, the site Cruise Critic is providing timely updates, and notes that Costa Cruises has eliminated Bahrain City as a port of call for two of its ships. Recently Costa cancelled itineraries in Egypt and Tunisia due to the recent events there.
