Identity theft tops consumer complaints to FTC

For the first time, imposter scams made the top 10 complaints, coming in fifth. This scam is when someone poses as a friend, family member, government agency or the like, to try and get consumers to send money. The FTC has issued a helpful spotting-an-imposter tool that can help consumers recognize and avoid such scams.
Here is a breakdown of the top 10 complaints listed out of the 1,339,265 calls received:
- Identity theft
- Debt collection
- Internet services
- Prizes, sweepstakes and lotteries
- Shop-at-home and catalog sales
- Imposter scams
- Internet auctions
- Foreign money/counterfeit check scams
- Telephone and mobile service
- Credit cards
