Sizing up bargains and quality at outlets vs. retail shops
Nov 17, 2011 10:30 AM

Do you really find the best deals at outlet stores? Savvy shoppers would say yes, including 60 percent of the Consumer Reports readers we surveyed.

That 60 percent said they were completely or very satisfied with their experience at outlets. When it came to which outlets were the best, those same shoppers were more likely to find great deals at stores like Coach, Haggar, Izod, and Van Heusen.

We also did our own quality comparison of both clothes and accessories bought at outlets vs. retail shops.

Bottom line, a trip to the outlets is worth it. Done right, you can end up saving big. We saved as much as 61 percent on our shopping trip. Even though the quality of some of the items bought at retail were often a bit better, the quality of merchandise from outlets was in most instances fine.

For more, you can find the full survey results and report on the value of outlet stores in the November issue of Consumer Reports.
