Dunkin' Donuts plans to double number of U.S. locations
Jan 4, 2012 5:15 PM

Dunkin' Donuts announced today that it plans to double its close to 7,000 coffee and doughnut shops across the country over the next 20 years.

Dunkin' Donuts is not just expanding in the U.S. Last month, on the Dunkin Donuts blog, Nigel Travis, CEO of Dunkin’ Brands and president of Dunkin’ Donuts wrote that "I’m proud to announce the 10,000th Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant is located in Xi’An, China." Other locations in the running included ones in Saudi Arabia and Colombia.

Dunkin' Donuts biggest competitor, Starbucks, controls approximately 32.6 percent market share and operates about 11,000 locations in the U.S, according to a report by CNNMoney. Dunkin' Donuts controls about 23 percent of the coffee and snack-shop market, according to data from IBISWorld cited by CNNMoney.

As our sister site, The Consumerist, points out: "With the price hikes at Starbucks in various areas of the country, the more widely proliferated Dunkin' Donuts will likely be a boon to customers who need a caffeine fix on the go."
