Death of toddler prompts recall of entertainment center
December 5, 2007 3:51 PM

Tv The Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling 138,000 entertainment centers sold by Ameriwood Industries under the Ridgewood/Charleswood brand name after a 19-month-old child died when the entertainment center collapsed on her.

The CPSC and Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports, have long warned about the dangers of furniture tip-overs. As the size of televisions has grown, so too have the number of tip-over related deaths and injuries, with deaths increasing by nearly 50 percent between 2005 and 2006, the latest figures available. According to the CPSC, an average of 22 deaths and 3,000 injuries occur annually when TV stands, dressers, furniture and ranges tip over and crush young children.

In most cases, the tip-over occurs because a television set was placed on top of unstable furniture, or the furniture was not intended to hold a TV. Children who climb on furniture to reach a TV can cause it to tip over. If the stand is faulty, the risk is even greater.

The CPSC says the entertainment center at issue in the latest recall can collapse if the back panel is not secure. In addition to the fatality, Ameriwood says it has received reports of at least three other injuries. The American-made centers, which are 71 inches high and 54 inches wide, were sold at mass merchandisers including K-Mart stores, for about $200 between June 2000 and May 2005.

The CPSC says consumers should immediately stop using the recalled centers and contact Ameriwood at 1-877-732-8252 to get a free support panel repair kit. Instructions for installing the kit are featured on Ameriwood's Web site.
