GE recalls 28,000 dual fuel ranges that pose a fire hazard

GEStove After receiving 15 reports of property damage, one serious, GE has recalled 28,000 Profile freestanding dual fuel ranges. A fire hazard is created by wiring in the rear of the range that can overheat. GE is aware of 47 reports of overheated wiring, including 33 reports of wiring that caught fire. Of these, one fire caused structural damage to the home and there have been 14 reports of minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.

The recall involves GE Profile 30-inch freestanding dual fuel ranges, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission notice. They were sold in white, black, bisque and stainless steel at appliance stores nationwide from June 2002 through December 2005 for between $1,300 and $2,000.. The following model and serial numbers can be found on the left inside corner of the bottom drawer.

  • Model J2B900: Serial numbers begin with LD, MD, RD, SD, TD, VD, ZD, AF, DF, FF, GF, HF, LF, and MF.
  • Model J2B915: Serial numbers begin with MF, RF, SF, TF, VF, ZF, AG, DG, FG, GG, HG, LG, MG, RG, SG, TG, VG, and ZG.

Consumers should immediately stop using the oven and contact GE for a free repair. The range's top burners can still be used, according to the CPSC.
