A pistachio growers group has set up a Web site in an effort to distinguish products processed by a California plant currently under investigation for salmonella contamination from brands processed elsewhere. Although the information has not been verified by the Food and Drug Administration, the FDA links to it from its report on the ongoing investigation.
The site, www.pistachiorecall.org, is operated by the CAL-PURE co-op of California pistachio growers and the Western Pistachio Association, which do not use pistachios from Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, CA, the company under investigation. The site lists more than 50 brands of products that do not use Setton pistachios.
The FDA has tweaked its advice to consumers about eating pistachios. Instead of telling consumers to avoid all pistachios, the agency is now advising them not to eat pistachios or food products containing the nuts (such as pistachio bakery goods and pistachio ice cream) unless they can determine that the products do not contain pistachios from Setton Pistachio—which isn't easy to do. Until the FDA is able to provide more information, consumers should not eat any Setton pistachios or products that contain them.
Pistachio lovers should continue to check both the FDA's recall database and the list of brands at pistachiorecall.org.
