We’re keeping a close eye on two bills—one in the House and one in the Senate—that would ban novelty lighters across the country. The lighters, which look for all the world like toys, come in forms like fish and motorcycles and Bengal tigers, clear temptations to children.
We wrote about this earlier after reading about children from around the nation who had been badly burned or fatally injured playing with novelty lighters. Since then a number of state and local governments have moved to ban them.
The National Volunteer Fire Council lists 18 states that have introduced or passed legislation restricting novelty lighters. We think such an obvious and preventable hazard should also be dealt with at the national level.
