If you're like most people, mopping the floor is one of your least favorite chores. But to add injury to insult, just imagine getting shocked or burned while doing it. That's what happened to at least 18 people using the H2O Mop Steam Cleaner made by Thane. This week 580,000 of the steam cleaners were recalled because the power cord can unexpectedly wear down and expose the wiring, posing a shock and burn hazard.
The recall involves a certain series of reference numbers, which you can find on the recall notice. The souped-up mops were sold directly to consumers by Thane through television infomercials; on the Web at www.thane.com; by QVC through its televised shopping program; and by retailers nationwide from June 2007 through December 2008 for about $100.
Everyone who bought a unit directly from Thane is being sent a repair kit. Those who bought it elsewhere should contact Thane at (800) 485-0017 or visit the firm's Web site. Of course, there's always the old reliable rag mop.
Update (05/19/10): Good news. Our steam mop testing has begun. Watch the video from our labs. We'll keep you posted on our progress.

Recalls We really hate to make light of recalls because they are serious business. But this week two recalls, taken together, conjured up an image of a cool singles pad gone badly awry. The first was of 500 leather butterfly chairs with a tendency to collapse. The second was something the chair occupants might collapse onto -- a leather shag rug. The problem with the 400 rugs is that they do not meet federal flammability standards. Enough said. Here are some other recalls made this week:
- 25,000 Evenflo Switch-A-Roo telephone toys (choking hazard) [See image above]
- 7,000 Propac Distributing youth hooded sweatshirts (strangulation hazard)
- 4,400 hooded jackets with drawstrings sold at Meijers Stores (strangulation hazard)
- 3,000 pairs Rossignol cross-country ski boots (fall hazard)
- 3,000 Energizer Light On Demand wallplate nightlights (fire hazard)
I just paid $5.95 to get a review on steam mops and it appears I wasted my $5.95 because you do not offer any information on steam mops!!
I agree with Sandra - I just paid $15.00 to learn about steam mops and there is NO info on them. For I consumer magazine that I trusted this is just unacceptable. If you don't have the info please do not mislead your public and ask for money on advice you do not have.
I subscribed to this website to save myself the time of constantly going to my public library to look up info in magazines. So far just about every product I have tried to research has turned up with no information on it, the steam mop is on the top of my list. I'm going to try holding my steam iron over my floor and see if steam actually works. For the comsumer report website, you should try rating yourselves. :( Janet
I bought a Haan steam mop from Amazon for $83.00. Consumers Report has no data on steam mops, so I had to rely on the reviews from other buyers. Don't know how true they are. I wished Consumers Report had tested them, then I would not be buying blind. I hope I made the right choice. Raymond Powell

I'm waiting for steam mops too - for months. When will there be a response - letting us know when a steam mop review will come out. At least test the obvious choices like the Stark and the Haan.
I am very "steamed" about the same issue!! NO STEAM FLOOR CLEANER REVIEWS!!!!!!! I mainly subscribed for just this item!
So, fellow blind shoppers, I to will today buy blind and forget about this uninformative site!! Which by the way, doesn't test EVERY model like you would expect it to or every brand!!! VERY UNHAPPY ABOUT THIS!!!
I am also unhappy that you have not rated the steam mop. This is a very popular item, and I am disappointed that you are not on top of this. Please ... move on this one!
CR posted a comment that they would be testing the steam mops in the spring of 09. Well it's almost winter now and still no review. What's the hold up CR? How about a response to your subscribers?
i'm also dissappointed that you haven't reviewed steam mops yet. i keep renewing my annual membership with you so that i can read unbiased reviews conveniently, in one stop, yet lately i find myself having to go to amazon more and more to read their customer reviews.
I would like to see a review of steam mops also. My wife saw an add for a Bissle and when she went to the store she saw the Shark and now has found the Haan online. I am a long time subscriber and have been in the online community for over 5 years, Consumers Reports does a fair job on the reviews they do, but some times you need to follow market trends in a quicker time frame so that the consumers that rely on your advise can get it when needed. I would like some guidance on this purchase and see if they do what is promised by the ads. Could you please review these quickly.
I am also not happy that you have not reviewed steam mops. What is the problem?? You review so many things, why not this??
Yes, I agree with these other posts. Will you please rate "steam mops" and "steam cleaners" for us?
This is the rage for home cleaning right now and we rely on your ratings before we make major purchases. I'd like to see how you rate both the expensive and inexpensive machines. Thank you.
I want a steam mop for Christmas, so I went to the library to read what Consumer Report had to say about them and was disapointed to find nothing about them. Are you testing now so I can get one for Christmas??
I would like to see information on steam mops.
I guess I will save my money $5.95 since you do not rate floor
steam cleaners.
Rating on floor steam cleaners please. As others, I'm about to purchase based on customers reviews. Thank you.
Black Friday...Wasn't sure what to buy for a steam mop..no guidance with C. Reports. Looking for assistance.
I ALSO JUST PAID $5.95 TO GET A REVIEW ON STEAM MOPS AND I AM FRUSTRATED THAT THERE ARE NONE! I AM LOOKING TO PURCHASE ONE, BECAUSE I HEAR FROM OTHER PEOPLE THAT THEY ARE GETTING QUITE POPULAR.
Please review steam mops!
It's almost December and you still have no info on steam cleaners. What's up??
Looking for Ratings on Steam Mops. You are the source I go to for this type of information, so please help.
I too was hoping to get ratings on steam mops, soon?
Please review steam mops soon. They are a hot item. There are several manufactures and multiple models. At this point it is a guessing. Please help consumers make an informed choice.
I too would like to see information
Please rate steam mops, thanks.
Also got online access to specifically find steam mop ratings (my wife wants one for Christmas). I am kind of surprised that CR hasn't got any. Looking to buy the Shark s3501. Hope it ends up with good CR ratings.
CR was the website I first checked to find direction in choosing the top rated steam mop on the market. But alas, such was not to be, as CR had NO reviews for steamer mops. So I went to sites like Amazon and consumersearch.com. The latter was most recently updated in Feb. I'm now more confused about the product in general than before my research began. Could CR please at least inform it's reader's as to a date when we could expect a review on steam mops. Thanks! My husband and I consult with CR for just about every household product we consider purchasing. You are a visible part of the American landscape. Thanks for your contribution!
I am very disappointed. I just subscribed to CR for the sole purpose of reviewing steam mops only to find out that they have yet to review any. Please test and review steam mops soon.
I am about to purchase a new steam mop. I loved the first one by shark because it was the only one I could find. It really was overpriced and basically not up to reasonable consumer standards, however when you are the only game in town you can do what you want. Now that there are steam mops everywhere, I would like to spend my money wisely. But alas no review by you folks. What were you thinking? Hurry up and do the review so that I don't have to do hit or miss shopping.
add my name to the list of "what, no review on this much advertised product". Would like a CM report before going shopping but guess not.
would like rating score on steam mops.are they as good as people say they are.
Please can you make a report of the Shark steam mop, it a very popular mop on the market.
I cannot believe Consumer Reports has not yet tested steam mops? Talk about being behind the times? It appears CR has been promising for some time. I would also like them to include Power Steamers (eg. Wagner Power Steamer) that can also be used as a mop.
If I don't see their review by summer, I will not be renewing my membership. I can go to public sites and at least get reviews on things I am interested in! Please CR - listen to your readers wants!
I Too was looking for information about steam mops. If you don't keep up with products what is the value of the subscription?
I have been looking all over regarding reviews and recommendations on steam mops. I was very disappointed that CR does not have any. I bought the Shark sweeper/vac...what a piece of junk and waste of money and time. So I am hesitate about their steam mop. I would like some reviews on steam mops. Would you please review these ASAP.
STEAM MOPS why no coverage on this product ? From what I can see and this is free reporting all have small water holder containers ,i borrowed my friends shark before she brought oI back and found myself constantly refilling it.After, it took about 5 mins. to steam up and if you use it too long it wont steam..so people read the reviews under a product if you go directly to an item and a lot of people will post whether they liked it or not and this is free its about the same amount of time to do as coming here. SO CONTINUE TO SEARCH TIME IS ON ALL SIDES FOR FREE
I guess we are all waiting for CR to do their ratings on steam mops. In the meantime, try checking Amazon.com. They have several steam mop products and a lot of customer reviews.
I just purchased the year for 26.00: specifically wanting reviews for steam mops? Very disappointed.
If complaint volume has in value in getting a test of steam mops I'll add my name to the list of those wanting a CR report.
I have been in the market for a floor steam cleaner for several months. Have been a staunch CR supporter/subscriber for years, so of course went here first for a review before purchasing. I am extremely disappointed that after 6 months there is still no review of steam mops. Looks like this may be my last year to subscribe also. CR - PLEASE LISTEN TO YOUR READERS!!! We are taking the time to let you know what we want.... take the time to read it and do the comparison. Thanks!
I am tired of buying products that don't perform to the manufacturer's advertisements and now wait for reliable reviews. Please rate the steam mops, a good one could ready be of valve in my home. Thank you.
I just subscribed to CR and imagine my disappointment when there was no information on the first product I was researching! I would really appreciate evaluation of "steam mops" as they seem to be so eco friendly. My second request for infor on mini food processors had the same result. I may need to rethink the idea of subscribing!
I am with the rest of the folks here. I have been a long time customer and rely on CR reviews to buy most my products. I would appreciate it if CR would rate steam mops ASAP.
Me, too! I would like CR to test steam mops.
Please...please...please... it is definitely time for a comparison of steam mops. When can we expect one????
I,too, recently subscribed to Consumer Reports and checked the first issue for steam cleaner ratings. I was very amused when I went on-line only to find a long list of disappointed CR readers longing for the same current information. Get with the program CR!
I subscribe to CR to make an informed choice of products. Steam Mops should have been reviewed by now. They have been out for quite some time and are an appealing product for the eco-conscious person. CR should be working on this for it's customers.
please,I consult with consumer reports for almost everything I purchase. I am looking to buy a steam mop and would like to know what would be the best purchase. please test steam mops soon...
Just re-activated my account to review steam mops. What? They aren't reviewed at all? I can't believe that.
Has anyone else on here bought one and loved it? Please let me know what you think on what steam mop would be worth the money. I was looking into getting a Enviro Steam Mop by Eureka. Any thoughts?
Yes...let's learn about steam mops.
I tried Oreck, and just returned it. It was too heavy. To fill with water, one must lift up the entire machine. Also, to clean anything other than a floor, the machine is too heavy to lift.
I really want to buy a steam mop but am not willing to plunk down that kind of money until I read what Consumer Reports has to say. Please hurry with this report since our house needs a deep cleaning real bad and I'm not kidding. Thanks!!
I can't believe it! I FINALLY talked my husband into letting me sign up for Consumer Reports. He said yes, because I have been bugging him for a year now to get a "steam mop". And there's NOTHING ON THE SUBJECT AT ALL!! What's the deal? I hope I don't regret subscribing to this website. (I'm not looking forward to the "told you so"... I should be hearing soon from my husband.)
Wow!!!
I know nothing about steam mops so i thought Consumer Reports would be a good place to look. I was expecting to find the information I needed and I was going to Subscribe again as I have been a subscriber on at least two prior subscription runs. Instead I find nothing except that Customers and potential Customers are not only unhappy, they have been ignored for an extended period of time. If you are wondering why you don't have more subscribers try reading your mail.

I am also interested in a light weight Steam Mop at a reasonalbe price. Thinking about the Shark or the Thane H2O steam mops, but would like some information on several points, how long is the cord, do any come with attachments, and also the time it takes to make the steam and how soon does it need to be refilled. Is this just a waste of time & money or is it worth it. I would prefer to purchase a United States made piece of equipment for several reasons and the Thane is made in the USA.
Delores P Kingman AZ Please advise thank you.
You can also add my name to the list of unhappy suscribers who would like to know the details on steam mops. I am very interested in purchasing one and thought CR would have the data I need to make an informed purchase. So much for that thought. I have been a subscriber for many years and am very disappointed that CR has not tested this product.
Steam Mop please - seriously I have been waiting a year to get a steam mop. I need to hear from CP first. I need a mop that will help revitalize the grout and tiles in 4 rooms in my home. Looking forward to hearing about them soon.
Add me to the list of request for you to test for the steam mops.
I'm disappointed as well. I subscribed to this magazine to get info about items I needed to buy and this is the second time I couldn't find any info. I wanted to check out steam mops. Maybe next time.
Ditto to all the comments about Steam Mops. Consumers usually does some reseach on products that are constantly shown on TV to ad nauseam, what happened this time. They have been on TV for the last few years and this is one of the reason I too became an online subscriber.
I too would like to see a review on the steam mops.
I will look elsewhere, and will not renew again.
Since there are no reviews on steam mops, guess I'll be checking with Good Housekeeping before Consumer Reports next time.
add me to the list of disapointed readers.I have been looking for a review of steam mops for more than a year. At the very least you could let us know if you are planning to do any testing in the near future. That way we can decide to wait or just go out and take a chance on a un-reviewed product.
Add me to the list of subscribers who are waiting for a review of steam mops. If they are half as good as the infomercials would have you believe - - - - nah! Silly me! But I am eagerly waiting for your review.
STEAM MOPS! YES Need a review! With all the postings, one would think CR would hop on the ball. Makes you wonder if they even read comments. Time to renew subscription, but maybe I won't. Extremely disappointed.
Add me to the list of people who would love to see reviews of steam mops. They sound wonderful and with 6 large dogs and 2 kids I'm always looking for something to make cleaning my floors easier.
When will CR publish as steam mop report?
the only reason i joined cr online i need information about steam mops. b4 i buy, i need inform.
Along with several others who have commented, I really signed up for Consumers Reports to get information on steam cleaners, especially the
steam floor cleaners.
When will you be testing them?
I signed up to get steam mop reviews too. Obviously they don't read these comments :--(
me too! Would like to learn more about steam mops. The Shark infomercials, etc.
I, too, have been unable to get any information about the
Bissell steam mop which has not worked properly since day 1.
Expected some kind of data on steam mops but found none.
Need review of steam mops, please. Very surprised that CR has no reviews. This was the primary reason I got the online subscription. Can you tell me when you expect to provide a review? - D
I too was looking for steam mop reviews here and am surprised to not find any.
I did find a fairly comprehensive comparison of some models at this link in the review by A.Chandler: http://www.amazon.com/Get-Organized-SHARK-STEAM-MOP/product-reviews/B0015GPFW6/ref=cm_cr_pr_redirect?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0#R3GPFCT4A2BRA5
This comparison recommended the Eureka Envirosteamer.
I notice that Consumer Reports is not doing so good in the department of giving us more information on different products being sold out there. Have you cut back? I paid for your reports and sometimes you don't have what I am looking for, what's up? I was also looking for steam mops. I got burned with you recomendation on the Toyota Corolla, I boutht a 2010 last September after researching thru your webpage, now I am stuck with it, here's hoping nothing goes wrong with it. Thanks!
Update: Good news. Our steam mop testing has begun. Watch the video from our labs:
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/video-hub/appliances/laundry--cleaning/steam-mop-testing/16601904001/85636842001/
I checked your site to see if you had reviewed the steam mop, but see that there are a lot of people hoping for the same thing. Are you going to be testing the various brands soon? Thanks for letting me know. Kay
Our ratings of steam mops will be out at the end of June -- on the website and in the magazine.
The H2O mop my mom bought in 2008 no longer heats up. I called customer service to see what could be done about it and was told that the warranty was up, my mom had not ordered any new filters(?) for too long a time. She passed away in 2009. So the only thing I could do was to buy a new H2O. Apparently there is no way to repair it? I felt quite chastised by the end of the call. Is H2O the best steam mop because their cutomer support is lousy! I hope someone else is better!
