Depending on the model, the surface heating elements can turn on spontaneously without being switched on; fail to turn off after being switched off; or heat to different temperatures than selected. This poses a fire and burn hazard. The recall involves Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, Frigidaire Professional and Kenmore Elite smoothtop electric ranges with rotary knobs and digital displays. Check the recall notice for model and serial numbers.
Made in the U.S., the ranges were sold at Sears and other national chain and independent retailers nationwide from June 2001 through August 2009 for between $1,000 and $2,500.
The CPSC is advising consumers to stop using the ranges and contact Frigidaire or Sears to schedule a free repair. For more information, contact Frigidaire at (800) 449-9812 between 8 a.m. and midnight ET Monday through Saturday or visit the firm’s recall Web site at www.smoothtoprangerecall.com. Consumers who purchased their range at Sears should call Sears at (800) 449-9810 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. ET Monday through Saturday.
I have a Kenmore smoothtop electric range, Model 790.9611 which was delivered to my home on 1/11/2007. Although this model apparently is not part of the recall, it should be. It too had a burner which this spring failed to turn off after being switched off and which heated to temperatures different than selected. I ordered a new switch from the Sears parts department and changed it myself, which corrected the problem. I wish I could be reimbursed the $58.83 that I paid for the switch.
Are Sear's products, including stove tops, being made in Mexico now? I had a Kenmore washing machine top of the line and its motor burned out and top of tub rusted out after about a year. When the motor was delivered to my house, I found out that it was made in Mexico. Is this what is happening with all of Sears' products--they are made out of the country? Perhaps the quality control is not as good out of the country?
Same thing, the burner came on and would not turn off- we had to turn the breaker off when not in use. Called Sears and they said no recall. Said they would send someone out- never did. I got tired of calling and talking to people who did not believe this was a problem. We too ordered the replacement part (which was different than the original) and replaced it ourselves and have no other problem. Poor customer service. How many fires were caused by this and people thinking they had left their stove on.
I had a Kenmore Elite smoothtop range (model# 790.46719600, S/N NF63318634) delivered in August 2006 (installed December 2006) and one of the "warm burner" warning lights never turns off. We are presently awaiting delivery of the sensor bar that is supposed to rotate when a burner is turned on, then rotate back when it is turned off (the part that tells the warning light to turn on/off). The new part is scheduled for installation September 14th.
Thankfully, our range was still under warranty when we made the initial appointment for repair of this item, so we won't have to pay for this repair.
Now, of course, I'm going to keep extra-close watch on my range, in case it develops any behaviors of the recalled models of Kenmore Elite smoothtop ranges!
I too purchased a Sears Kenmore Elite smooth-top range with this problem. I had to turn off the range off at the circuit breaker after each use because the left front burner came on completely by itself. Who knows how long the problem was occuring and we are lucky that my family was not killed or injured or that our house burned down. Sears in Ramona, California first said they would provide a pro-rated credit for the 3 year old range toward the purchase of another range of my choice, but then retracted their offer. It was during the time when K-Mart purchased Sears. I have spent tens of thousands of dollars at Sears over the years and would have likely spent thousands more in the future, but after that experience, I vowed to never shop at Sears again. Dirt bag company.
We bought a stove Frigidaire stove model #FEF375EBA & it too should be on the list, one of the burners, (once turned on high) will NOT cool down until you turn it off which is so scary when it happens. We also bought a Kenmore Elite washer & the signal that tells you its done stopped working ages ago, (its only about a year old), & now you have to hit the start & other buttons a few times before they'll work!! VERY frustrated & annoyed!! Especially with the washer that we paid $1000 for!
A repair man stopped and was'nt sure where the aluminum
tape goes.Do you have a proper guide to show where they go.
I agree, the 790.9611 needs to be part of the recall as well. My front left burner cooks at the temp it wants to, and then doesn't shut off and turns on by itself. I find myself shutting the breaker to the stove off because I don't want it to turn on on its own while I am not home. I now have to find a switch, buy a switch, and chang the switch out. I can handle it, but I have no idea why it is not part of the recall like the others are. Are not enough people with this model complaining?
I had the same problem, burner wouldn't turn off, warranty was up and I had to pay for the service call and repair, I guess we need to sue to get our money back
I have a Frigidaire Gallery Professional Series Convection Range and the board to the plug wires at the back broke in half and had to be replaced if not found and smelled smoke it would have burned the house down, then the clock board burned out with the timers and al and as the rest of you the burners will not go off and now the glass top is cracked and you can't even get the part to this stove. The model number to mine is FEF389WFCG and if you put it on self clean look out as the door will not open when finished. If you put it to the small burner the large one stays on and this elevates the heat also. Help What can we do as consumers???
We almost had a fire with our Kenmore model 790.9611 tonight. Sparks and smoke. We also experienced the problem of the burner not turning off.
I've had the same problem with the 790.9611 model stove - I nearly set fire to a jar of peanut butter when the thing turned on by itself. Sears has been unwilling to do anything to address the problem without a $129.00 service call. I've already filed a complaint with the Consumer Products Safety Commission, and am writing a letter to the BBB and Colorado Attorney General's consumer affairs division to see if we can 'help' Sears recall this dangerous product.
David
BE SURE you are contacting and letting the Consumer Product Safety Commission know about these problems!! That's the only way the recall will be expanded.
we just bought a gas stove by Frigidaire model # lggf3043kfd my plumber was called in to do the hookup.after completion of hookup we turned on the stove. after a few moments the insulation under the stove top started to smolder and fill my house with smoke.we unhooked the stove and set it in my driveway and that is where it sits.we called frigidaire and they told me it was the plumbers fault.we opened up all the windows in the house to vent the smoke and reset all the smoke detectors.they didnt take responsibility for the problem no make any effort to help me resolvethe issue.lowes is where we bought the stove they told me to sue Frigidaire for damages.we are just so relieved with all the help we have recieved from lowes and Frigidaire (NOT).MY ADVICE to all reading this go with GE appliances i see they have a much better rateing than most appliance co out there
I've had the same problem with my Sears Kenmore 790.9611. It nearly burned up a tea kettle, though we had cut the burner off. Also, the "self-clean" feature gets so hot it has yellowed the white appliance paint on top of the oven door and just below the controls above the burners on the stove top. I called Sears and they said, although we had a five-year warranty that was valid, the yellowing was a cosmetic problem and wasn't covered. They would send someone out to look at it for a $129 service call fee. I pointed out that we had first reported the problem within the first three years of the warranty, and that the independent contract-repairman at that time had said this was a chronic problem with this Kenmore model. The Sears rep. said that, since the problem was not repaired in the first three years, I would have to absorb it.
I have a kenmore stainless steel 790.9611. My wife was baking a roast. The oven became so hot that you could not touch the outside of the range door. A F10 error code displayed. We switched the electrical breaker in the fuse box. We have no doubt that this stove would have caused a fire
We have had the same problem with the model #7909611340A. The 800 customer service number was no help. I ended up calling the Executive Customer Service number (888) 266-4043. They were not only willing to listen, but willing to pay for a tech to come out AND fix the problem for free. Try that number to get some success in having this fixed the way it should be!!
I purchased a Kenmore Electric radiant range in 2002. The broiler element turned on when my son was home and ran at top notch heat for 1 hour before he noticed it smelled like burnt metal in the kitchen. He called me and told me he could not shut it off. The "off" button had no affect! I had him turn the breaker switch off. That was the only way to get the upper broiler element to shut off. The stove was so hot, you could not touch the oven door handle or the sides of the stove. The front top of the oven door was yellowed. Despite the extreme fire hazard with this model, the Sears Manager at the store where I purchased told me he could nothing because I did not buy a service agreement. As a consumer who has spent thousands of dollars at Sears, he made no attempt to keep my business. I will never shop at Sears again and I will make sure I spread the word of my horrible treatment.
On Feb 11,2010 I had a house fire that destroyed my kitchen & attic, killed my pets, severely damaged the 2nd floor rooms near the attic. & damaged my living room. This occured after 3 successive power failures. We were not home when the power came back on. I came home to find the house on fire. The fire started near my black glasstop Kenmore range ...don't have model # right now...which i got in 2006 . It had been totally turned off the night before the power came back on & after reading these letters about burners turning on,I'm wondering if a post power failure power surge caused it to come on full blast. I'm awaiting the fire investigators report. They didn't find anything wrong with the stove upon examination & may take it out to be tested later.Said they would first do internet research on the model for any recalls or problems. Any of you out there had your stove come on & start a fire or heard of it happening after a power failure??
About a year after we got the stove it used to sometimes show PF in the readout when there was no power failure.Couldn't turn stove on even after pressing off button. Called Sears & they said it sometimes happens & keep pressing off. Finally worked. Same thing happened when there really was a power failure. We never could operate stove with PF showing in readout unless we pushed the off button first & PF disappeared.I think power surge may have over ridden that feature & caused the fire.
I am now experiencing the same problem with a Kenmore model #911.9540900 that I purchased in 2001. The right front burner has a mind of it's own and sometimes cannot be turned down. I've had nothing but problems dealing with Sears and will certainly never buy anything there again.
We purchased a Kenmore Elite model# 79099122405 4 years ago.
Several months back, the control board cracked and popped and went into flames up the wall behind my stove. The technition made three trips to try and figure out how to fix it. After about a month, and several(used) parts later they fixed it. It worked for a couple months. Now the oven controls on the power board will not work, and I have no oven. Sears will not stand behind this. They said they have not had this happen before. They are trying to blame it on a possible lightning strike. We didn't have lightning in February in Kansas. Is there anyone out there this has happened to? It is wrong to have to spend our hard earned money on a product that could have burned my house down, and now cannot even be repaired. They cannot keep getting away with treating customers in this way.
I have a Kenmore smooth top range Model 790.9611408 that left front burner would not turn off and then came on by itself. I'm lucky my house hasn't burned down. Turned in a complaint to CPSC and will contact Sears ASAP. Range should be pulled from the market. Big Hazard!
we found out today that our Kenmore Elite stove is part of the recall. The right front burner was red hot on "low" and wouldn't turn off. Called Sears and repairs won't happen for 1 week. Daughter's birthday is in two days. Cake, anyone???
My question: Anyone have this stove repaired and actually trusts it? I'm afraid I'll never trust the repair job. I don't want to have a fire hazard in my home with my 2 young children!
My friend purchased a Kenmore Elite model 790.41023800 flat top with digital controls in October, 2008. A replacement of the digital control panel was done in October, 2009, under the warranty. We are snowbirds and use the range for six month and then move on to our other house up north (the range is in our Florida house). After the repair we moved on and returned just now (October, 2010), looked at the range, found the same problem. It appears that some of the digits are not working. Called Sears and were told it is now out of warranty and we must pay for the same problem the range came with. We purchased this range based on a Consumer Report rating.
Just posted comment. Sorry, but we use the range in Florida for the winter and leave for the summer. I mixed up the useage months. In October 2008 we used the range until May 2009. The problem popped up in October 2009 when we returned to Florida. After the repair we used it until May 2010. When we just returned now, found the same problem and were told we should either pay for the repair or write to the Sears Executive Office, which we have just done. Are there any other complaints about this range?
