Holiday bakers: Beware of these hazelnut recalls
Dec 22, 2009 5:10 PM
Just in time for holiday baking there has been a large recall of hazelnuts that has spawned several smaller recalls and affected such companies as Whole Foods and Harry & David. The original recall of 114,350 lbs. of shelled hazelnuts potentially contaminated with salmonella was made late last week by Willamette Shelling of Newberg, Oregon. In the days that followed there have been six more recalls from companies to which Willamette or its customers distributed the nuts. Although the recall is centered in Oregon, the nuts were distributed to many states.

If you use hazelnuts in your favorite holiday recipes you may want to take note of these recall notices from the Food & Drug Administration. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
