Kiss that (cadmium) frog goodbye
January 29, 2010 7:21 PM
ChildrensNecklace The first recall of cadmium-laden kids’ jewelry was crowned today: The "Princess and the Frog" necklaces sold exclusively by Walmart, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced.

The two pieces of children's jewelry are the crown, model number 4616-4187 and UPC # 72783367144, and the frog, model # 4616-4190 and UPC # 72783367147.

The jewelry was manufactured in China and imported by Rhode Island company FAF, Inc. Some 55,000 pieces are being recalled for high levels of cadmium, which is toxic if ingested. The necklaces should be taken away from children immediately and can be returned to Walmart for a full refund.

As we’ve reported, there are currently no regulations for cadmium in jewelry, although CPSC chair Inez Tenenbaum has warned manufacturers not to use heavy metals in children’s products. She’s also stated that the agency will develop mandatory standards as needed.
