After reports of fires, LG recalls 98,000 Goldstar and Comfort-Aire dehumidifiers
January 4, 2010 3:56 PM
Dehumidifier You're probably not using a dehumidifier during this cold snap but if you own a Goldstar or Comfort-Aire model take note of this recall.  After getting reports of several fires, LG Electronics of China is recalling 98,000 Goldstar and Comfort-Aire dehumidifiers because the power connector for the compressor can short circuit, posing fire and burn hazards.

LG has received 11 reports of property damage incidents involving arcing, heat, smoke, including four fires that spread to a building structure causing significant smoke and/or water damage. No injuries have been reported.

The dehumidifiers were sold at Walmart, Home Depot and Heat Controller from January 2007 through June 2008 for between $140 and $150. They’re 30-pint white units with a red shut-off button, controls for fan speed and humidity, and a front-loading water bucket. “Goldstar” or “Comfort-Aire” is printed on the front. The model and serial numbers are printed on the interior of the dehumidifiers and can be found by removing the water bucket. The model and serial numbers are listed on the recall notice.

Consumers should stop using the recalled units and call LG at (877) 220-0479 or log on to the LG Web site to find an authorized LG service center for a free repair.
