After fires, Discovery Kids recalls 360,000 lamps
February 11, 2010 3:50 PM
Discovery_KidsLamp When Discovery Kids advertised two lamps as "animated" it likely had no idea how animated kids could become upon seeing the lamps burst into flames in their bedrooms. But that's what happened in nine cases, including three fires that caused property damage and another that caused smoke inhalation injuries to a child.

The problem with the marine- and safari-themed lamps is that a defect in the printed circuit board can cause an electrical short, posing a fire and burn hazard. About 360,000 lamps have been recalled, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The lamps were made in China and imported by a California company, Innovage.

The recall involves the Discovery Kids Animated Marine Lamp with model number 1627121 or 1628626 and the Animated Safari Lamp with model number 1627124 or 1628626. All models have batch numbers beginning with “2”. The decorative lamps are silver in color and feature rotating films with marine or safari scenes. “Discovery Kids” is printed on the front top left corner. The batch number is an 11 digit number located on the bottom of each unit. The model number can be found on the bottom of the packaging.  They were sold at mass merchandisers, department, drug and hardware stores nationwide, online and through direct sales from July 2009 through January 2010 for about $10.

Owners of the lamps should unplug them and contact Innovage for information on returning them for a full refund at (888) 232-1535 or by visiting the firm’s Web site at www.lamprecall.org or e-mailing info@lamprecall.org.

I checked the model numbers today for our Discovery Lamp and found it was not included in the recall, but when I double checked with the company I was told that they are recalling all the units that have model numbers that begin with the number 2 and would send me a mailer to return it and a check for $10.

The CPSC was unaware of this information when I inquired about it and had I not checked with the company I would not have known that it was being recalled. Why not simplify this by stating that all light units beginning with the model number 2 are being recalled.
